15. What We’re Reading: November 28, 2011

November 28, 2011 | Monday | 17 Comments

We're back, with more podcasting fun, this time as we chat about what we're reading. We discuss cursing in romance - and whether there's more cursing and blue language in romance published recently. And we talk football. NFL, specifically, and which players are the most hated. The music this week was provided by Sassy Outwater, who knows a heaping ton of musicians and finds original music for us for each episode. This week's music is "Sonata for Piano, Op. 26: Fuga: Allegro Con Spirito" and it's performed by Jade Simmons. It's from her album Revolutionary Rhythm, which is on sale… read more »

Sizzling Summer Book Club Pick: Raised by Wolves by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

August 21, 2010 | Saturday | 13 Comments

Time for the next book club pick! I’ve been wanting to do a paranormal and a YA novel, and then I thought, why not both?! So the next pick is Jennifer Lynn Barnes’ Raised by Wolves. Check the blurb: Adopted by the Alpha of a werewolf pack after a rogue wolf brutally killed her parents right before her eyes, fifteen-year-old Bryn knows only pack life, and the rigid social hierarchy that controls it. That doesn’t mean that she’s averse to breaking a rule or two. But when her curiosity gets the better of her and she discovers Chase, a new… read more »

HaBO: Gene Kelly Lovin’ Vampires

December 29, 2009 | Tuesday | 24 Comments

Jami has the most insane inquiry, and I’m so curious what series this is. Ever since your blog about vampires and werewolves, I’ve been trying to remember this series I was telling another lady about in that same thread. It all centered mostly around the one vampire, however in a side role was a female vampire. Here’s what I can remember about the series - Both vampires in question were French. He was originally going to go into the priesthood until he was seduced by his childhood friend who would one day be the female vampire in this series. After… read more »

Cry Wolf and Hunting Ground by Patricia Briggs

December 09, 2009 | Wednesday | 70 Comments

I’m embarrassed to admit there was gaping hole in my werewolf romance reading, but I’m so glad I fixed it by reading these books. Anna is an abused werewolf, changed against her will and subjected to hideous abuse and assault by her former pack. Charles is the son of and executioner for the Marrok, the werewolf who is alpha over all the the packs in North America. When Charles was sent to clean up the mess of Anna’s pack, his arrival set off a series of small explosions in their private world. Charles’ wolf chose Anna as his mate. Anna… read more »

Bookmatcher: Billie Bloebaum knows Books

November 24, 2009 | Tuesday | 19 Comments

Time again for Billie Bloebaum, Powell’s Airport book buyer, matching readers to books - a dying art that I can’t get over. Amy writes: The last book I read that I really, really loved was “Sugar Queen” by Sarah Addison Allen. Billie: My first impulse is to go with Alice Hoffman or maybe ‘Like Water for Chocolate’ or ‘Love in the Time of Cholera’ or ‘Chocolat’, but to find a good romance novel with a touch of magical realism that doesn’t veer into schmaltz is more of a challenge. ‘The Unfortunate Miss Fortunes’ by Crusie, Dreyer, and Stuart has that… read more »

Bitten by Kelley Armstrong

November 18, 2009 | Wednesday | 97 Comments

This isn’t so much a review as a re-read and reflection as to why I love this book so much. I reread this book because it’s one of my favorites, but I didn’t question whether or not I’d enjoy it. I knew I would, and I did, and I’ll probably reread it again soon, even though I’ll remember what happens. This was the book that hooked me on the paranormal romance, and rocked my world when I read it. I had no idea romance could be like this, that heroines could be angry and violent, that exploring the rage-filled and… read more »
