GS vs STA: Fairy-Tale Romance Retellings

April 16, 2012 | Monday | 87 Comments

Billie Bloebaum wrote in with a rather interesting question:  Has there ever been a GS vs. STA for fairy tale-inspired romance? Because I'm totally going through a phase with it right now and was hoping for some recommendations of things inspired by tales other than Cinderella or Beauty & the Beast. I can find a ton of stuff in YA and Fantasy and even Lit Fic (and if you haven't read 'The Snow Child' by Eowyn Ivey you should do so nownownow) ( A | BN | K | S ), but Romance seems to be stuck on those two stories, with… read more »

Links to Sales and Hilariousness

December 13, 2011 | Tuesday | 22 Comments

Courtney Milan's "Unraveled," better known as Smite's Story, is on sale now. Unveiled and Unclaimed were both book club selections, and so many readers were clamoring for Smite's story - I had to make sure you knew it was available. Otherwise someone might have smote me. [ AMZ | BN | ARe ] Also on sale now for $1.99: Teresa Medeiros' Yours Until Dawn. [Kindle | BN & nook] ... Via many people: Daniel Abraham's Private Letter from Genre to Mainstream - it is sharp and hilarious. My favorite part: the reply letters in the comments.   read more »

Goodnight Tweetheart by Teresa Medeiros

December 27, 2010 | Monday | 47 Comments

I wanted to like this book. I like epistolary novels, and I really like epistolary novels involving technology. I liked Meg Cabot’s “The Boy Next Door,” which is largely told via email, even with the weird part where the villain is running down the stairs and the heroine is on her laptop in the stairwell typing that the villain is running down the stairs. OMG… pick your laptop up and run, girl! I also have a major soft spot for the section at the back of Dave Barry’s “Dave Barry in Cyberspace,” where he wrote what I presume is a… read more »

Guest Review by Dora: The Devil Wears Plaid by Teresa Medeiros

September 25, 2010 | Saturday | 29 Comments

I swear I’m not doing this on purpose, but yet another guest review offering arrived in yon inbox while I was editing my review, and I enjoyed this one so much I wanted to share. I’ll turn things over to Dora who also read The Devil Wears Plaid. I spotted The Devil Wears Plaid the same way I find all my romances; in the “stationary” aisle at the supermarket. The reason it stood out to me was it’s title, sort of, which was vaguely . The other reason would be the woman they chose for the cover; her cheeky smile… read more »

The Devil Wears Plaid by Teresa Medeiros

September 24, 2010 | Friday | 168 Comments

Some of the earliest romances I read were by Teresa Medeiros. I remember staying up all night reading Charming the Prince. Medeiros is one of those authors who is abidingly constant in her writing. Sometimes it knocks me over and I have to lie there for awhile savoring the feeling, and sometimes I read it with a smile and a quick-moving eye, eager for more. While I didn’t read the vampire books she wrote, as they came at a time when I was Vamptired, I was very curious about The Devil Wears Plaid. Medeiros writes great dialogue, and has a… read more »

The RWA Prep Drinking Game

July 26, 2010 | Monday | 22 Comments

All over the place, many of us are making final preparations to head over to RWA’s national convention in Orlando. Given my to-do list today, I figured it was about time we started drinking ourselves into a stupor with common tasks that prepare you for RWA National. And if you’ve never been, have a look at the fun - I hope you can join in next year. Manicure: 2 sips Pedicure: 2 sips Both at the same time, unable to turn a magazine page or even scratch your nose which OF COURSE itches: 5 sips Haircut: 1 sip Haircut, and… read more »

Romance on the Web

June 03, 2010 | Thursday | 32 Comments

First: I was over at Salon Magazine over the weekend with a summer reading list of contemporary, historical, and paranormal recommendations for hot vacation relaxation: Your Guiltiest Summer Reading Pleasures: While the perfect tan requires careful sunscreen, enjoying a romance requires only two things: a belief that everyone deserves a happily-ever-after, and the ability to ignore anyone who sniffs at your choice of reading material. A good romance novel is like the perfect day at the beach: wonderful and restorative from start to finish. Note: I wish it didn’t label the list guilty pleasures, too, but alas, the title is… read more »

On the role romance novels play

July 25, 2009 | Saturday | 54 Comments

I’ve been thinking a lot about the role romance novels play for its readers and authors ever since reading Teresa Medeiros’ inspiring and heart-wrenching post about why she writes romance novels. If you’ve been buried underneath some sort of Internet rock and haven’t read it yet, go have a look-see. That piece does more to allay doubts about the power of popular fiction to make a substantial, beautiful difference in people’s lives than anything I’ve read in recent memory. A few things Medeiros wrote caught my eye, however, and started my brain spinning in all sorts of loops. Forgive me… read more »
