Judy Mays: We Got Your Back, Ma’am

April 27, 2011 | Wednesday | 168 Comments

As a rule, I recommend that every carbon-based life form online avoid the comments section of news sites, from newspapers to television stations to local blogs covering the farmer’s market, because the comments are usually overflowing with fresh awful crazysauce. In this case, I recommend everyone read the comments because they restore some sanity and hope for what is a truly disgraceful and frankly stupid news segment. WNEP, a television station from the northeast and central part my home state of Pennsylvania (OH MY GOSH I AM SO PROUD. NOT.) ran this lovely piece of crap story revealing the pen… read more »

Angela James on The Marilyn Denis Show

January 20, 2011 | Thursday | 14 Comments

Carina Press executive editor Angela James was on The Marilyn Denis Show this morning, which is a live national broadcast in Canada. Live. Also, national. And LIVE TELEVISION. Wowser! I was trying to watch the live feed but couldn’t get it to work. But no worries: the clip of Angie’s appearance is up on the Marilyn.ca website already! Angie’s segment was all about digital reading devices, and how women romance readers are a driving force in the development of the digital reading market. She demonstrated the different devices, gave a brief overview of the differences between the Kindle, the Sony… read more »

Downton Abbey

January 10, 2011 | Monday | 72 Comments

Last night I bumped into a tweet from Linda Holmes at NPR Monkey See about a PBS miniseries that was about to start. So I changed the channel. OH MY GOSH YOU GUYS. Downton Abbey is delicious television! If you’re a historical romance fan, or a historical drama fan, or you really like opulent British houses or early 20th century costumes, or outstanding acting, do yourself a favor and tune in. Some folks speaking with me last night were irate that the broadcast was allegedly edited for the US audience. According to this article/interview, the original series was edited to… read more »

Friday Videos Let It Be

December 24, 2010 | Friday | 14 Comments

Big thanks to Hubby and to his friend Matt for this amazing bizarre video featuring ... well, I’m not actually sure what it’s FOR but it has a LOT of people in it. Just watch it. All six minutes. My two favorite comments, from Matt: “I never wanted it to end,” and from someone on YouTube: “This is what you see before you die.” Someday, you might be in a video for a Norwegian (I think) television station (I think) as a “spaghetti western filmer.” Because that would be excellent and winning awesome. Can anyone tell me what this is?… read more »

Election Day Videos Say Vote

November 02, 2010 | Tuesday | 10 Comments

It’s election day here in the US, as polls open at 6am and television news analysts start hyperventilating all over their new touchscreens as they surf the internet on camera so you can watch YouTube with them and they’ll feel less alone and alienated by the internet. Hey now! You can watch this absolutely bananas piece of PSA on YouTube with me and John Leguizamo right now! I think this is from the 90s but I confess, my MTV/Rock the Vote years get all mashed up in my head. If you’re in the US and you’re a registered voter, please… read more »

What I Meant Was…

July 26, 2010 | Monday | 45 Comments

Gotta love it when I stick my foot in my mouth! Last night I did an interview with 744 ABC Melbourne about erotic fan fiction. During the interview with Alan Brough, he asked me about why erotic fan fiction so often pairs two characters of the same gender. What I meant to say was that in most countries, popular culture reveals a general discomfort with homosexuality, and that frank portrayals of homosexuality are not common. What I said was that “most people in the world are uncomfortable with homosexuality.” Clearly, these are not the same things. Yes. Everyone in the… read more »

Imagine the Production Meeting on This One

April 03, 2010 | Saturday | 17 Comments

So imagine you’re a producer for CTV up in Ye Olde Canada, and you have this great idea for a telenovela featuring heavy product placement with Old El Paso, featuring a beautiful woman forced to marry the richest, most evilest evil man in El Paso Viejo. And there’s a pool boy. I think this kind of crazy fun can only happen in Canada. If someone tried to pull this off in the US, there’d be some kind of celebrity placement involving Justin Beiber or one of the homogeneous Disney starlets and it’d suck wind mighty fast. But this? Oh, this… read more »

October 20, 2009 | Tuesday | 7 Comments

If you like popular culture essays, BenBella has launched their new Smart Pop Books site, where they’ll be offering free essays weekly and the option to order digital copies of essays individually. Currently among the crop of free essays for reading are “Whimsy Goes with Everything” by Heather Swain from the Gilmore Girls essay collection edited by Jennifer Crusie, and “Darn Your Sinister Attraction!” by Carol Poole about the violent relationship between Buffy and Spike from a collection that analyzed the psychology of Joss Whedon’s television creations. SmartPop is also running a contest for essays on the Whedon show Dollhouse.… read more »

Accidental Cinderella by Nancy Robards Thompson

October 06, 2009 | Tuesday | 22 Comments

Lindsay Bingham is a small town girl who finds herself in St. Michel, a small European country similar to Monaco, as a bridesmaid to her friend Sophie, who is marring the crown prince of said country. At the wedding, she meets the gaze of one hot celebrity chef, Carlos Montigo, and the attraction is immediate. As Carlos goes off to fetch champagne for them both after a short but charged conversation on the balcony, another man, a television producer, asks her to dance and drops an amazing opportunity in her lap: television show hostess for his newly-purchased cooking network. Sophie,… read more »

So Many Books, Too Many Bosoms

August 01, 2009 | Saturday | 9 Comments

So didja know Toni Andrews has her own television show about books? True that. And this week, all over wooded parts of Connecticut, I’ve been her guest on “So Many Books.” We talk bosoms, kitten poop, books, and so many more books. Here’s Part I, with Parts II and III available on You Tube as well (for some reason, embedding was not emworking).   read more »

The Honeymoon is Over

February 09, 2009 | Monday | 50 Comments

A nice person over on my Twitter feed asked my why I call my Kindle “Sir Kindle the Fusspot.” Well, the short answer is, Sir Kindle is very fussy and requires some delicate care in file transfer and management. The longer answer is, I’m embarrassed to say, the honeymoon of me and Sir Kindle is over, and I’ve recognized some serious flaws both in the unit itself, and in the way Amazon is electing to do business as a purveyor of ebooks and ebook readers. First, the Kindle itself: I like the unit, I’m used to holding it in a… read more »

The Ascent of Money

January 13, 2009 | Tuesday | 23 Comments

I wrote on Twitter over the weekend about a popular song in which Ne-Yo croons lovingly about a woman who is so amazingly attractive because… she pays her bills on time. Her car and her house are nearly paid off and Ne-Yo can barely keep his head on straight about her. Yes sir, the new heroine: fiscally savvy and financially smart. After the hurricane bowling alley the last few years, we saw heroes and heroines who could control the weather. Paranormal, I think, gained popularity because when terrorism is everywhere, it’s comforting to know who the villain is, because he’s… read more »

Bitches, Man. Bitches

December 22, 2008 | Monday | 16 Comments

Hot on the heels of this weekend’s links to Mr. Romance, the comedy comes another tv show that’ll raise a few Bitchery eyebrows. You know how popular colors move from clothing to wall color to cars? Or maybe it’s another order, but I remember reading about how color trends move from industry to industry within 5 years. So here we have some interesting movement from romance fiction to television: Hollywood Reporter says that Fox has begun development for a new dramedy about a quartet of female New Yorkers who are werewolves. The title? Wait for it… wait for it…. read more »
