From JaniceG: Hatpin! Self defense! Hatpins as self defense tools! "When attacked from behind, she grasps a hatpin. Turning quickly, she is able to strike a fatal blow in the face." This would be a good addition to steampunk. We don't need more googles. We need BIG ASS HATPINS holding on the fascinators, which themselves could double as ninja stars. No, don't thank me, I'll be here all day. Me and my bottle of narcotic cough syrup. Another link! Somewhere in the last few days, I was tweeted this link. I have no idea where the origin is, so if…

Awhile back, in 2009, DocTurtle, a professor of mathematics, was a guest reviewer here as we schooled him on the best of romance. You can see the complete DocTurtle archive to see his serial reviews of An Infamous Army by Georgette Heyer, Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase, and Sex Straight Up by Kathleen O'Riley. He didn't finish Dark Lover by JR Ward, but he gave it his best effort. Something about "tenure" and a "packet." And things that were due. Every now and again, DocTurtle and I would exchange an email, but he was buried with work and reviewing was put on hiatus - until I received…

Courtney Milan's "Unraveled," better known as Smite's Story, is on sale now. Unveiled and Unclaimed were both book club selections, and so many readers were clamoring for Smite's story - I had to make sure you knew it was available. Otherwise someone might have smote me. [ AMZ | BN | ARe ]
Also on sale now for $1.99: Teresa Medeiros' Yours Until Dawn. [Kindle | BN & nook]
...
Via many people: Daniel Abraham's Private Letter from Genre to Mainstream - it is sharp and hilarious.
My favorite part: the reply letters in the comments.

Back in August, this lovely author, Theresa Meyers, sent an email to Smart Bitch Sarah asking if I (Me! CarrieS!) would review her latest book, The Hunter. Well. As Paula Deen once said, that just knocked my socks clean off and into the washer. I feel I have Arrived. Now that authors (or, at least, an author) are requesting me (me!) personally, I'm sure the New Yorker will be calling any minute. I'm waiting by the phone, New Yorker! Call me! Anyway, there I was, flattered right out of my mind, when I realized that this was actually a disaster,…

Ahem. Squee commences… NOW. OMG OMG THIS IS AWESOME. GO BUY IT. What, that isn’t enough for you? Fine. I have to come clean ad admit I have not read “The Iron Duke.” I respect the opinions of those who have loved it every which way enough to recommend it to people who I know will love it (and they have). I know that it is likely something I will enjoy when I do read it. But my brain is overloaded at present and has been for awhile, and I know it is exactly the wrong time to introduce said…

This all you need to know. Hot and Steamy: Tales of Steampunk Romance is neither hot, nor steamy, nor romantic. It contains short stories that work more like sketchy idea pitches than like fully realized stories, the romances are perfunctory and either depressing or unbelievable (or, in many cases, both) and worst of all the collection is boring. I normally read one book every one to three days depending on length, content, and other commitments, and it took me almost two weeks to force myself to finish this because I. Was. Bored. I was really excited when this anthology came…

Another guest review from Carrie S, who loves sci fi romance, and things steampunk as well. I love steampunk sooooo very much. Something about all those gears and goggles and mad scientists running around in improbable corsetry just enchants my very soul. So, I was very excited to read The Twisted Tale of Stormy Gale, by Christine Bell. Given the subject matter of a time traveler with a fondness for The Wizard of Oz, a character named “The Loony Duke of Leister”, and steampunk elements galore, I was hoping it would be a lot of fun. Given the brevity of…

Dust off those digital reading devices, because it’s Sizzling Book Club pick time, and I’ve picked a digital novella for your reading pleasure. This month’s pick is, I kid you not, a steampunk erotic paranormal wild west romance novella: Wilder’s Mate by Moira Rogers. I will have to re-read to see if there’s any mention of Almack’s in there because if it were also somehow Regency it would be INSANE. But I don’t think so. Unless, of course, one of the bordellos in the book is named Almack’s. I’ll have to ask the authors. If you’ve been curious about steampunk…
