According to Jeaniene Frost, our review of Halfway to the Grave was the first review for her 2007 debut novel. I still remember Hubby picking the book up off the dining room table and asking me what it was - the cover is still very striking, and I believe the same model has been used for the series. This week, starting today, actually, Halfway to the Grave is on sale for $1.99 as an ebook, along with bonus materials like deleted scenes and excerpts of the new book. There’s never-before-published scenes, the first four chapters of One Foot in the…

Carina Press executive editor Angela James was on The Marilyn Denis Show this morning, which is a live national broadcast in Canada. Live. Also, national. And LIVE TELEVISION. Wowser! I was trying to watch the live feed but couldn’t get it to work. But no worries: the clip of Angie’s appearance is up on the Marilyn.ca website already! Angie’s segment was all about digital reading devices, and how women romance readers are a driving force in the development of the digital reading market. She demonstrated the different devices, gave a brief overview of the differences between the Kindle, the Sony…

I write this with dismay, honestly. Despite some major faults, the Kindle does digital book reading, loading, and buying so well, and works so well for me, I’m using the Kindle. Not even the Sony Mercedes ebook reader could lure me away. Every time I sit down at my computer, I find out about a new way to read, load or access books on the Kindle. I can sync books purchased at Amazon across six devices at this point, and I can email files to my device anywhere. Because of the way I interact with books (lots of them, in…

I think of the three Sony readers with the updated touch screens as the Lexus, the Mercedes, and the Hummer. The Lexus, or the Sony Pocket, is slender, trim, comes in pink and is luscious. The Hummer is the Daily and my gosh golly it’s huge. Built like a Zagat’s guide on steroids, with wireless and a touch screen interface and did I mention it’s huge? It’s like a reading sky scraper. The middle one, the Touch, I think of as the Mercedes. And I want to be clear here, the high-end car analogy, which I will absolutely beat into…

Holy smoke. More than 500 people entered the giveaway for a Sony Pocket Reader, a case, and two free books. That’s a LOT of people. How can I pick just one? I can’t. I admit it. I can’t pick just one. So… I’ll pick two! I have a red demo model Sony Touch reader to give away as well for a second-place winner, thanks to the nice people at SONY USA. See what all that contest entry madness does to me? MADNESS I tell you. So, let’s pick us a winner! No, two winners! Random.org has chosen: First place: Georgina!…

Sony contacted me about doing a giveaway in celebration of the premiere of Eat Pray Love, which hits theatres this week. A Sony Pocket! In sexy silver! With a leather case (that is really a beautiful shade of blue on the outside) and two download codes for both of Elizabeth Gilbert’s books! Woo hoo for digital reading devices! I know many of you are paper reading fanatics - which is absolutely awesome with sauce - but if you’re curious about trying digital reading but haven’t gathered all your pennies into one place to buy one, here’s a chance to win…

First: Sony Pocket has a new bundle with case that made me ponder. For $169 you get a Sony Pocket with a special leather cover branded with “Eat Pray Love” and “a code for eBook downloads of Eat, Pray, Love and Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert.” Now, I am all for nice digital reader covers, though Elizabeth Gilbert’s book drove me up a wall and across the ceiling. I thought the paperback might have been retitled as “My Navel: Let Me Gaze At It.” So I don’t necessarily want to cover a Sony Pocket with a leather cover devoted to that…

Thursday 17 June I attended The Big Money’s “Untethered” conference, all about publishing in the tablet era (0_o). As predicted, it was high in unintentional comedy, with some sessions that I hope are made available online for their unparalleled awesomeness. Be warned: this entry is HELLA LONG but the sections about NPR (awesome) and the device panel where folks were dismissive of the consumer who asked a question about ebook pricing (me) are probably the juicy parts if you want to skip ahead. Don Graham, CEO of Washington Post, began the sessions by speaking from the perspective of a reader…

If all goes well, tomorrow I will be attending Big Money’s Untethered conference, all about publishing on tablet media. I haven’t received a registration confirmation despite being a media partner, woe is I. I think (I hope anyway) that they’re defining “tablet” to its broadest definition to include not only iPads but also smart phones, digital reading devices, and the like, because if it’s all iPad, all day, that’ll get boring in a hurry. But the focus on publishing should be interesting, particularly since the speakers include Sarah Chubb, CEO of Conde Nast, Brian Murray, the CEO of HarperCollins, and…
