April 26, 2012 | Thursday | 1 Comments

Tonight at 9pm ET, the window below will go live, and we'll be discussing Tamara Morgan's Love is a Battlefield (Goodreads | ARe). I hear rumors of ARC giveaways from Samhain, and possibly shenanigans with mayhem on the side. Plus the author will join us at 10pm ET. I love book club chats, as they are very lively and fun discussions, especially when everyone brings their own beverage of choice. I hope you'll stop by!  read more »

Links and OH MY GOSH Sales

June 09, 2011 | Thursday | 21 Comments

First: Zoe Archer wrote this thoughtful entry about romance and feminism: Romance novels depict the emotional lives of women and men.  The books aren’t merely the heroine’s journey toward love, but the hero’s journey, as well.  Men’s emotions aren’t dismissed or suppressed.  Men aren’t belittled for having feelings.  Often, it’s the hero’s growing level of comfort and familiarity with emotion that forms one of the central elements to a romance novel.  And this openness and acceptance with love actually makes the hero stronger, not weaker.  Over at Kirkus, my most recent column is up. I’m talking about when the sex… read more »

Venus in Blue Jeans by Meg Benjamin

November 17, 2010 | Wednesday | 6 Comments

You were right. All the people who told me after the “Hint of Tuna” adventure that I should give the Konigsburg series another try, you were right. It was worth another try, and I’m glad I did. This book didn’t knock my socks off, but I enjoyed reading it. “Venus in Blue Jeans” was a source of much Kindle ire for me, as the file was somehow locked for “another user” - except I was the one who bought it, so WTF? - and in order to read it, I had to get on the phone with customer support. But… read more »

Ch-ch-changes!

October 18, 2010 | Monday | 2 Comments

There, get that out of your head any time soon. HA! Fresh from the dentist, where I had tips put on my canine teeth because I grind them, so I’m extra more VAMPIRE now (WOO!), here’s the publishing news that exploded in my inbox today: First, Harlequin is rebranding, per a letter that was posted on e-Reads, and has a new logo. Plus they are eliminating the “Silhouette” name and consolidating under the “Harlequin”: brand: In April 2011 our Silhouette series will become Harlequin series. As you know, Silhouette Nocturne became Harlequin Nocturne in June of this year. Special Edition,… read more »

Long Time Gone by Meg Benjamin

August 13, 2010 | Friday | 50 Comments

I started reading Long Time Gone by Meg Benjamin because the description intrigued me, and because the cover caught my eye. The hero is an eldest brother and the acting chief of police - and isn’t as sure of himself as one would think. Erik Toleffson has a lot of regrets in his life, particularly that in his youth he was a rebellious fuck up and a bully to his younger brothers, up to and including beating the tarnation out of them. Now that he’s back after two tours in Iraq and Kuwait and a few years in a different police… read more »

Blood Smoke and Mirrors by Robin Bachar

May 13, 2010 | Thursday | 36 Comments

For a debut book, this story has an incredibly strong and funny main character - it is first person, for those who abhor the I, me & myself - and a strange and interesting world of characters. Even though it had some flaws in characterization and evenness, I had some difficulty extracting myself from the book. It’s fun and different and the narrator is bizarre and goofy and doesn’t take herself too seriously - which I adore in an over-emo-paranormal-flooded market. First, look at the cover. Holy SMACK is that a good looking cover. If this were on a shelf,… read more »

My Bad, You Win: A Samhain Giveaway

November 10, 2009 | Tuesday | 283 Comments

So last night, I made a tool of myself. Today: you profit from my being a butthead. Hooray! Last night I was ticked off and cranky and the icing on my small torte of pissypants was that a book I’ve been wanting to buy, Lorelei James’ All Jacked Up, was unavailable still. The Amazon page says that because I’m in the US, I’m not able to buy the book - and I got all indignant and shoved my head up my ass on Twitter (SO amazing how easy it is to do that! Whee!) and thought the problem resided with… read more »
