An Annotated Bibliography of Contemporary Romance Scholarship on Romance Readers

May 14, 2012 | Monday | 11 Comments

Awhile back, I was contacted by Beth, a library science student, about doing a school project. She needed to create an annotated bibliography, and wanted to know if I'd like to be her "client" for the project: "I am taking a course called Search and Discovery, which is a fancy name for using and evaluating online research tools and databases. Our final project for the course is to compile an annotated bibliography for someone with a research need." I fail to see how this could possibly be a bad thing. Beth has piles and piles of databases at her fingertips,… read more »

Jane Eyre Vs Wuthering Heights Smackdown - A Guest Entry by CarrieS

April 30, 2012 | Monday | 183 Comments

This guest entry from CarrieS is in honor of Charlotte Bronte's birthday, which was last weekend, 21 April.  OK, Bitches, this is it.  In honor of Charlotte Brontë's birthday (April 21, 1816), it's time to fulfill my long-time goal of establishing what I believe may be a universal truth: You cannot passionately, deeply, own-multiple-copies-of, take-to-a-desert-island-as-your-one-book, love both Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights.  Love one, hate the other.  That's the deal.  You may appreciate the quality of the writing in both books and their historical significance, but on a visceral level you will love only one. How have I come to… read more »

Thanking the April Advertisers

April 28, 2012 | Saturday | 8 Comments

Time to thank the folks who advertised here for the month of April. If you noticed or clicked on the ads, you helped support advertisers who want to target romance readers, and the upkeep and general mayhem that's part of hosting, postage-ing, and managing the hot pink palace of Bitchery. And if you've been looking for an ad for a past month, at the bottom of the ad column is an archive of the advertisements. Thank you to the advertisers, and to you and your marvelous self.    read more »

Links and Random Data

April 21, 2012 | Saturday | 27 Comments

Data and deals, we have!  First: Rainbow Romance Writers are doing a survey of romance readers and asked me to pass along the link to you. I enquired what the survey data was going to used for, and they told me, "we're mostly just gathering intel. It's sort of piggybacking off of the survey that RWA did recently but with a few more specific questions, with some focus on LGBT romance, although we're looking for a pretty broad range of responses. Some of what we do with what we find will depend on what the data reveals, but we may… read more »

Lindsey Sale!

April 19, 2012 | Thursday | 12 Comments

With the DoJ settlement for some publishing houses, the prices for ebooks will slip and slide in different directions, but for now, there's a big ol' sale on a huge portion of Johanna Lindsey's backlist, and Karina Cooper's books as well, plus a handful of historical and romantic suspense novels.  If you're not sure which Lindsey to buy, you can take a look at the reading recommendation list we created for the Classic Romances: Which One First, or, you can read the entire comment thread on the original entry for more options.   read more »

Sessions at RT: Reading!

April 17, 2012 | Tuesday | 20 Comments

I took a lot of notes at the RT sessions I was part of - and this might be the most I've written by hand in a long, long time. What follows is a general round up and highlights of the sessions and things I noticed at RT this year. Reading! I was part of four sessions. One was "Choosing the Right e-Reader for You," with Jane Litte and Angela James. That sessions was up against some very popular sessions, and was very intimate. We had some folks who were still unsure which reader they wanted, and some who were… read more »

Whatcha Reading?

April 13, 2012 | Friday | 123 Comments

Time to get all nosy up in your reading list - what are you reading this weekend?  I'm reading several books at once, which is NOT good for my brain, especially when I mix genres, but I started too many things that I like. I have one book on the phone, one on the coffee table, one on my Kindle - it's getting messy. But Pig was right - Liz Fielding's Tempted by Trouble [Goodreads | Amazon | BN | HQN | All Romance eBooks] is really adorable. Plus, Tessa Dare's A Week to be Wicked [Goodreads | Amazon | BN | ARe] has been pushing… read more »

What Lies Beneath by Andrea Laurence

April 11, 2012 | Wednesday | 51 Comments

I admit, I have a low tolerance for amnesia stories. I don't often enjoy them, I can't suspend my disbelief when the person with amnesia conveniently remembers some things, like the names of her household servants, but doesn't remember other things, like who she is. And I always wonder where the other physical symptoms are, like questionable bladder control or possible drooling. So when this book was recommended to me, I read it with some trepidation. Ultimately, I finished it because I wanted to know what happened, not because I cared about the characters or their plight. It fed my… read more »

GS vs STA: Must-Read Loveswepts

April 02, 2012 | Monday | 29 Comments

Back in February we talked a bit in the comments of the "Lovesweeping the Titles" discussion about Loveswept romances that are totally worth finding (or hopefully re-releasing!), the ones that rocked your Loveswepty world. So many authors first appeared within the Loveswept line, such as Iris Johansen and Janet Evanovich, and I thought it would be a good idea to have one long recommendation thread of which Loveswepts are worth finding.  Random House is bringing back older Loveswepts and publishing new books (such as Ruthie Knox's Ride With Me, which I really enjoyed) [ ] . That line is digital… read more »
