Yesterday, Hubby and I went shopping for warmer clothes for all of us, and there, on the northernmost wall of the store it was… Christmas. Trees and garlands and sparkly stuff and holiday frames and all kinds of stuff, all on sale. YOU GUYS. IT IS NOT EVEN HALLOWEEN. (Also: we are not Christian and therefore do not celebrate Christmas but that’s beside the point). Did that stop me from looking at the items on sale and finding some very excellent gifts for people for the holidays? Of course not. (We celebrate Hanukkah - the most excellent holiday ever because…

Tonight the YWCA of New York City will present Harlequin CEO Donna Hayes with the W Award at its annual Summer Soirée. The W Award is given to individuals and companies who represent and focus on the empowerment of women, and since Harlequin’s stories focus on the triumph of the heroine, and since they’re written by (mostly) women and read by (mostly) women - and, interestingly enough, produced at HQN HQ by (mostly) women (with the exception of his fabulousness, Don Mills), it is entirely perfect that Hayes is being honored. It’s stars and astronomy time! Carina is a constellation in the Southern sky, and is Latin for “keel” - as in, the fins and structures operating below the surface of the water unseen yet keeping the ship balanced, and on its course. Here’s an interesting bit of physics I didn’t know: the keel’s job is to convert a sideways force to a forward force, sort of like trying to figure out how to convert a changing tide or market to keep your industry moving forward. Nice name. It’s even more awesome when applied to Harlequin, who launched Carina Press today,…
