Last night I bumped into a tweet from Linda Holmes at NPR Monkey See about a PBS miniseries that was about to start. So I changed the channel. OH MY GOSH YOU GUYS. Downton Abbey is delicious television! If you’re a historical romance fan, or a historical drama fan, or you really like opulent British houses or early 20th century costumes, or outstanding acting, do yourself a favor and tune in. Some folks speaking with me last night were irate that the broadcast was allegedly edited for the US audience. According to this article/interview, the original series was edited to…

Audrey asks: So I have a HABO book I’ve been trying to track down for a while now, and I would enormously appreciate your help. The reason for my attachment to the book is a bit embarrasing but feel free to print if you use this: it got me all in touch (hehe) with my lady parts when I was 15. Apparently the love scenes were quite descriptive because I remember reading it and a lightbulb flashing THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT! So this is what I remember: it was a single title historical, most likely set in the…

Grab your lasso and your chaps, because we’re going back to college to round up some romance in academia links. First: on 23 February at 12:30 pm at Brandeis University, documentary filmmaker Laurie Kahn, who directed Tupperware!, a documentary about Tupperware and the women behind it, for PBS’ American Experience, will be talking about her new work-in-progress, “Creating the Popular Romance.” From the press release, sent to me by awesome reader Michael: The world of romance novels (who writes them? who reads them? who publishes them? why are they so popular? and what do they say about our culture?) is…

When I first met Kate Duffy, it was at RWA in Dallas in 2007, and I was 8.5 months pregnant. I waddled everywhere, and I was, literally, a torpedo. I gave birth 6 weeks later. Like any good pregnant lady at an RWA convention, I was in the bar when I was introduced to Kate Duffy. There was much squeeing. I was a fan of hers, and she was a fan of our site. She was drinking with one of her authors, but wanted to introduce herself and tell me how much she loved reading Smart Bitches. I was sort…

Ah, the days when “house party” meant something very different than today’s definition. Marie Brennan asks: Later this year I hope to work on a just-for-fun novel which will take place largely at a Regency-era house party. I don’t know a lot about such events, though, and any attempt to search the Internets for information just drowns me in pages about the PBS reality series. I therefore turn to novels and the Bitchery: what are some well-written Regencies that feature house parties? Aside from the Julia Quinn novel (Dang it, which one was it?) where the heroine goes after the…

First, this made me sad: due to a loss of funding and broadcast rights, Reading Rainbow will leave broadcast schedules on 28 August 2009. The Reading Rainbow series has not been in production for several years and PBS had taken it out of the weekday feed schedule last fall to make room for the new literacy-based shows. WTVP continued to air the series at that time. Neither PBS nor producing station WNED, Buffalo were able to fund another cycle of renewals, nor were they able to identify a new corporate funder. The series will continue to be available to educators…

This is five minutes of hilarious win. If you turn on the “described video for the visually impaired” feature on PBS movies, and add commentary, it’s just epic.
Stay away from impressively large masts, is all I’m saying.
[Thanks to Denise Shaw for the link.]
