Heavy D and the Hero

November 14, 2011 | Monday | 111 Comments

I started this post on 25 October, and put it aside because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to say. In mid-October, I put Heavy D’s “Now That We’ve Found Love” on my running mix and was thinking about the song and how much I liked it (and Heavy D) while I was out one day. Heavy D died unexpectedly on 8 November at age 44, and the news headline made me remember this post and that I’d never finished it. While I’m still not sure that I made every point I wanted to make (my train of thought while… read more »

GS vs. STA: Characters With Chronic Conditions

November 12, 2011 | Saturday | 138 Comments

I have an anonymous request for a “Good Shit vs. Shit to Avoid” list: Like many of us, I cope with things by reading about them, and I love finding a book about someone who has problems similar to mine and is able to thrive. I was recently diagnosed with a chronic condition that will almost certainly affect the rest of my life. It’s not fatal, and it’s not degenerative, but it is likely to lead to some level of physical disability in the future. I am thus wondering about books with heroines who are physically disabled. I know there… read more »

Red by Kait Nolan

November 07, 2011 | Monday | 23 Comments

Whenever I read a first person YA novel, I feel like I need to state in the review that it is first person, and the narrators are telling the story to the reader in each chapter directly. I know that drives some people bananas, though it doesn’t bother me. But be ye aware: this is first person narration from the hero and heroine’s point of view. Awareness aside: Holy, holy crap, I really enjoyed this book. Plot summary ahoy! Elodie Rose has just moved to town, and is keeping a big ol’ secret. She’s on the cusp of turning into… read more »

Ahem. Squee commences… NOW. OMG OMG THIS IS AWESOME. GO BUY IT. What, that isn’t enough for you? Fine. I have to come clean ad admit I have not read “The Iron Duke.” I respect the opinions of those who have loved it every which way enough to recommend it to people who I know will love it (and they have). I know that it is likely something I will enjoy when I do read it. But my brain is overloaded at present and has been for awhile, and I know it is exactly the wrong time to introduce said… read more »

Sizzling Book Club Pick: Touch of Frost by Jennifer Estep

August 01, 2011 | Monday | 69 Comments

My pick for august, is paranormal, YA, and is the first book in a series - woo! Touch of Frost is a new YA series from author Jennifer Estep, and I thought it was spiffy. Here’s the synopsis: Gwen Frost is an outsider at Mythos Academy, a school of myths, magic and warrior whiz kids, where even the lowliest geek knows how to chop off somebody’s head with a sword. Gwen is an outsider both to the students of the Academy and the rest of the world. But when her gift of psychometry - the ability to know an object’s… read more »

Kim Harrison’s Graphic Novel

July 07, 2011 | Thursday | 113 Comments

I don’t often host blog tours (hardly ever, actually) but this seemed so neat I wanted to share it with y’all. Youse guys. Yinz! Anyway. Kim Harrison’s Hollows series is pretty familiar to readers of paranormal and urban fantasy romance, but now those same characters are making the jump to graphic novel format. Since I know many of you love graphic novels, especially those featuring strong women, I thought you might enjoy this sneak peak. I have two pages of the novel below, and there’s more at other sites, as well, with links to come. Here’s pages 8 and 9… read more »

June 30, 2011 | Thursday | 0 Comments

I didn’t receive a review for the RITA® Reader Challenge so let’s find some, shall we? Plot Summary: Tough as nails Alexandra Trevalyn does what most people can’t: She kills werewolves. Once part of an elite group of hunters, she’s going rogue these days, though no less determined to rid the world of bloodthirsty beasts…once and for all. That’s why Alex had no choice but to kill Julian Barlow’s wife—and will have to pay the price. Julian’s brand of vengeance is downright devious, and now he’s turned Alex into a member of his pack. It’s only a matter of time… read more »
