Beverly Cleary has always been one of my favorite authors. I think I read every book she wrote, and while I liked the Ramona books just fine (I was, after all, an older sister who had acres of sympathy for Beezus), I loved Cleary’s teen books. Fifteen was one of my favorites, but my absolute mushy love is reserved for The Luckiest Girl. From a romance perspective, this book is a perfect construction of romance tropes and expectations. There’s the plucky, pretty, enthusiastic and sensitive heroine, Shelley, who is invited on what seems like a whim to live with her…

This request comes from a gentleman whose wife is looking for the first romance she read. This one is a doozy: “This would have been in the 1983-1987 timeframe. I think it had a purple cover (but I don’t think Johanna Lindsey wrote it). I remember it being quite racy for a girl my age… It may or may not have started off with a rich heiress trying to escape a bad betrothal in the Caribbean to a much older man to pay off her father’s debts. There was a pirate (with very green eyes) between the Carribbean and France…

I totally had to Google “APRN” - I figured Accounts Payable Registered Nurse. Or Associated Press Registered Nurse, trained to treat the fallout of bad papercuts? But no - advance practice registered nurse. Live and learn - and maybe find this book for Eileen: [This] was one of the first romance stories I ever read, and I would just like to read it again at some point to figure out WHY the story has been in my head for so long! It was a short story that I believe was in an anthology. A woman drives from Oregon to move…

In case you needed a more compelling reason than Heaving Bosoms and my reading from the Choose Your Own Man-Titty Paranormal Section for tonight’s erotica festivities at In the Flesh, there is a crucial and key reason you should think about making the journey on down to the Happy Endings Lounge. My mother in law is planning to attend. I shit you not. Watch Sarah burst into epic flame with a major case of the OMGWTF as she reads from The Licking Fucking Sucking Dripping Drumming Darkness. In front of her mother in law. The embarrassment may be felt in…

Heads up! Our interview with NPR’s All Things Considered will air tomorrow, Saturday 11 April. Local airtimes vary but you can find your local NPR station and check their schedule as to when it’ll air. The interview was over 30 minutes long but I know we’re being edited down to about five or six minutes. I hope the good parts air but who knows? I do know that the sound technician with me in Connecticut was laughing, and the sound engineer with Candy out in Oregon gave up his plans to read a book while we taped and listened in…

A down market for real estate bugging you? Hold a writing contest and give away your house as the prize. Beach front property in Yachats, Oregon, no less.
Note to self: someday, hold a writing contest with a BIG HONKING PRIZE.
Of course, the 1099 of the house value will drive your taxes to levels that will make you wanna hide under a table, and I wonder if such booty is subject to capital gains, but nonetheless. Brilliant idea. And wow, gorgeous town.
