So now that the 4th of July is nearly over, and we’ve celebrated the independence of the US (and, if you’re me, bemoaned our lack of universal healthcare and the ridiculous shortness of maternity leave), it’s time to do something sexy LIKE OFFLOAD MY CAMERA. Ready for RWA pictures? Here we go! I arrived home from ALA (Motto: 25,000 librarians can’t be wrong!) late Sunday, unpacked and repacked. And while I was packing, I got me a FedEx with.. book marks! Holy smoke, I have to make like an author and remember I had them in my purse. Did I…

I usually love O’Reilly’s heroes, and this one was no exception, but my disappointment rested on the heroine’s character, and the unfinished business between them, and of the hero’s past as well. Despite my disappointment in this story, I so love O’Reilly’s characters that I’ll pick up her next book without hesitation. Edie is moonlighting for a night as a cab driver when she picks up Tyler at the airport. He’s a highly-trained surgeon who specializes in cardiology and is in New York City for a short stay while he competes for a fellowship at a local hospital. He’s competing…

The rules of the RITA® Reader Challenge stipulated a limit of 250 words, but I loved this review SO much I let it break that rule. This is not an invitation for anyone else to so, but I loved Diana’s review because it highlights how fiction can dare readers to think of themselves differently. First, the description of the book: A lady does not smoke cheroot. She does not ride astride. She does not fence or attend duels. She does not fire a pistol, and she never gambles at a gentlemen’s club. Lady Calpurnia Hartwell has always followed the rules,…

I’ve received a few RITA® Reader Challenge Reviews already - and here’s the first, of Eloisa James’ A Kiss at Midnight, which is nominated in the Best Historical category. This review is from Jayne First: the book description: Miss Kate Daltry doesn’t believe in fairy tales . . . or happily ever after. Forced by her stepmother to attend a ball, Kate meets a prince . . . and decides he’s anything but charming. A clash of wits and wills ensues, but they both know their irresistible attraction will lead nowhere. For Gabriel is promised to another woman—a princess whose…

A lot of people try to see all the Best Picture nominees before the Oscars ceremony- so let’s do that for the RITAs, shall we? I looked at the list of RITA® nominated books from the RWA and there were a lot of books I was curious about. I’m not going to be able to read every nominated book before the ceremony… but I can read one in each category - and I invite you to do it, too. Here’s my plan: Below is the list of nominees, along with a Google Doc link to a list of the nominees.…

Coming to New York any time soon? Head on down to the Morgan Library at 225 Madison Avenue for an entire exhibit devoted to Jane Austen, including her letters, illustrated early volumes of her books, and an original manuscript. The exhibition concludes with a documentary film, The Divine Jane, which features interviews with authors and critics about Austen’s impact on fiction—and is available online for viewing, though I’m not sure if it’s US-only. The exhibit will be at the Morgan through 14 March 2010, so you’ve got time to stop by. And if you’re not coming to New York, there’s…

Jane used to joke that it was hilarious to her how often it seemed I was living under a very large, very heavy rock, since it was clear I had no idea what was going on around me. It’s true. What my rock is cooking: let me show you it. So while I knew about the Julia Spencer-Fleming series, I’d never read them, mostly because character relationships that carry on over multiple books tend to wear me out, and drain too much of my memory, and because I fear, in the context of a mystery series, that while the crime…

Thanks to Anonymous, one of my faves, a video that shows how absolutely cool it is to make NYC commuters stop and take notice of anything, let alone applaud. Seriously. We don’t notice crap.
