GS vs. STA: Military Heroes

February 01, 2012 | Wednesday | 85 Comments

This "Good Shit vs Shit to Avoid" request comes from Joanne, who is hunting for books to read this winter: I am looking for suggestions for lovely romance or wonderfully trashy romance involving a soldier/soldier of fortune, tough guy in uniform, or one beside a crumpled uniform on the floor. A happily ever after would be nice. In fact, I require it from my fictional men. After an incredibly stressful month and searching in vane, I implore you, please help. The wine is breathing, the phone is turned off (finally) and I am heroless. It's sad really. Since Joanne isn't… read more »

Little does he guess that she’s about to reveal a whole new world to him, one touch at a time. And here is Cassandra’s review: read more »

GS vs STA: Special Forces Heroes

May 04, 2011 | Wednesday | 70 Comments

I’ve received two email messages asking for Navy SEAL romance recommendations. I WONDER WHY. So list night I asked on The Twitter if anyone would be interested in a reader-generated list of recommended SEAL and special forces romances. The response was very, very positive. AGAIN. I wonder why. (Not.) So if you’re thinking a military hero would totally rock your reading socks right now, bring it on. Lynn Raye Harris said last night that she would want to learn more about any “Special Forces romances…. Army’s Delta Force is pretty bad ass. Marine’s Force Recon aren’t slouches either.” Hell, yes.… read more »

GS vs. STA: Filling Up the Kindle

April 06, 2011 | Wednesday | 97 Comments

I received a request from Stephanie, who is looking for a reading list, so I’m breaking out the Good Shit vs. Shit To Avoid category to help her build a full and happy Kindle: I’m a female soldier about to deploy and need to fill up the old Kindle…..any suggestions? I’m looking for series with lots of books, in particular, as opposed to just individual books. My favorites would be more along the lines of stories about pioneers/Old West, but anything that doesn’t have to do with the military or soldiers would work…I’m looking for escapism here from my daily… read more »

Collision Course by Zoe Archer: A Guest Review by Carrie S

March 29, 2011 | Tuesday | 17 Comments

Collision Course is my new favorite one-night stand of romance novels, and it was just the thing to see my through a very stressful week which culminated in Dear Daughter catching the flu.  This is not a book that is likely to inspire anyone with deep thoughts about life, but for pure escapism you just can’t do better than this.  Many thanks to Zoë Archer for transporting me to the outer regions of space in between earthly crisis! I was so excited to read Collision Course that I lost my eBook virginity to it (it’s only available digitally), and although… read more »

Random Thoughts from Anonymous Reader on Men of Danger

July 10, 2010 | Saturday | 80 Comments

An anonymous reader sent me this recap of her thoughts while reading Men of Danger, an erotic anthology headlined by Lora Leigh. Hannah’s Luck, by Lora Leigh You know you’re reading a Lora Leigh story when the hero is as terse as he is tumescent and the heroine is so copiously wet from the mere thought of him that she needs her own herd of lifeguards to rescue the surrounding populace from the continual flash-floods. The word “explode” is used in ways that are meant to be sexy but are, instead, very very disturbing. He wanted to feel that tight… read more »

Romance Writers, Fiction & Nonfiction

March 16, 2010 | Tuesday | 15 Comments

Romance writers have, or have had, a myriad of jobs. One of my favorite things about romance writer bios is how one snapshot of a writer’s career history could include everything from taxonomy to tax preparation. And, surprise, surprise, romance writers often write… other stuff. Jenny Gardiner, whose book Sleeping with Ward Cleaver was the American Title III winner, has a new book out - but it’s non fiction. And it’s a memoir. About her psychotic parrot. No lie. Alyssa Day, whose newest book, Atlantis Redeemed, just come out last week, also wrote a nonfiction memoir several years ago about… read more »

HaBO: Air Force MP Needs Romance to Read

March 11, 2010 | Thursday | 72 Comments

This request will make someone swoon. I already did, I freely admit it. Stephanie writes: Help!  I have a friend who is an Air Force MP.  Big burly Alpha guy.  (pause for visual image to form)  Anyway he is currently deployed overseas and asked me to send him some books.  I thought I was going to have to buy out the Tom Clancy section at the bookstore but then he admitted to me that he used to enjoy Jackie Collins’ books but now needs something else (along the same lines) to read.  He’s an undercover romance reader!  (I found him,… read more »

Brave Women Read Romance

November 13, 2009 | Friday | 22 Comments

On Wednesday night I gave a brief talk about romance at the JCC of San Antonio. My usual speech at a book event is not so much reading from the book but giving a top 5 or 6 list of “Things you didn’t know about romance, and romance readers.” I customize the points, depending on the audience, but usually, unless I know the audience is already well-versed in the genre, there’s so much information, I try to counter it with some factual awesomeness. I talk about how readers, much like the romance genre, are not at all what most people… read more »

Romance & Veterans

November 11, 2009 | Wednesday | 43 Comments

Did you know there’s a chapter of romance writers who are also veterans? Check out my favorite page on their website: The Before and After page with military photos and current photos as well. To all of you marvelous ladies, and to all those who have served in the armed forces of any country, Happy Veterans Day. So, here’s a question for you: which is your favorite military romance, and, which is your favorite romance written by a veteran? For me, military romance is a tough sell. There are some military romances that featured violence that still gives me the… read more »

SEALed and Delivered by Jill Monroe

November 02, 2009 | Monday | 10 Comments

Jane recommended this book to me when I was looking for a contemporary category to read after a streak of lukewarm, unexciting historicals. On one hand, it was a great suggestion because holy cow did I enjoy it. It’s a book that evolves with so much humor and warmth, you smile while you read it. But on the other hand, whatever comes next has a lot to live up to. Hailey has just moved home to her family’s beachfront bed and breakfast in San Diego after three failed engagements and a life built on escaping the same employment she’s just… read more »
