So here’s something I never expected from Bitch Magazine. Really. I’m sort of horrified and appalled and wondering if someone over there fell and hit their heads. Bitch posted their 100 YA books for the Feminist Reader list, and of course, like any thing that is (a) a list (b) adorned with the word “feminist” and (c) on the internet, there was lots of discussion. And disagreement. And expressions of disappointment. Some didn’t like that certain books were left off, and some didn’t like the books that were selected, particularly those that were sexually violent or challenging to the reader’s…

ETA: Note: Apparently, *I* have not learned the lesson that the plural of “lesson” is “lessons” - and there was an apostrophe up in that title. All fixed! Color me embarrassed - which if memory serves is a rather sickly shade of puce. Here’s a not-in-any-particular-order list of lessons learned from the Cook’s Source copyright idiot-a-thon of last week. 1. Do not piss off the internet, especially when now, unlike a few years ago, mainstream news media will have no problems with citing Live Journal as a source. 2. Don’t steal. I mean, is that really a hard one? It’s…

First, a link to NPR’s article on Digital Overload: Your Brain on Gadgets. According to the article, The New York Times reports that the average computer user checks 40 websites a day and can switch programs 36 times an hour. “It’s an onslaught of information coming in today,” says New York Times technology journalist Matt Richtel. “At one time a screen meant maybe something in your living room. But now it’s something in your pocket so it goes everywhere — it can be behind the wheel, it can be at the dinner table, it can be in the bathroom. We…

Since the FTC released it’s guidelines for blog reviewers, I’ve been trying to coalesce my reaction and explain why I’m so irritated. The reaction to this post will likely be that I’m arguing against transparency. I’m not. I’m quite in favor of it. What I am against is whining. Since the FTC guidelines were released, I’ve heard and read several versions of the following statement on many, many sites and from many people: “I think this is a great idea. I can’t understand why you’re disinclined towards transparency. Shame shame! I myself have been burned by bloggers not disclosing the…

Great day in the morning! We’re in People Magazine. While the article doesn’t appear to be on their website, in the 3 August issue, featuring a very messy-headed Robert Pattinson and “his messy love life” on the cover, on page 46, there’s BOSOMS! And a list of our very favorite romances. Here, a PDF for your viewing pleasure! People magazine, page 46. People (the magazine, not the plural noun) had asked us for a list of our very favorite romances, and that list was, of course, a LOT longer when we sent it in. Five of our choices made the…

My name is Sarah, and I have a Twitter problem. I actually think Twitter is freaking awesome, and love it and love using it - to the point where sometimes I have to say to myself, “Step away from the Twitter.” It’s almost a default for me - email, Twitter, web. I can think of a few dozen of examples of how Twitter has connected me to people and information I never would have known about if I hadn’t been signed on, and I haven’t been using it that long, either. I can remember when I first signed up and…

In a rare joint appearance, Candy and I will be on a panel today at NYU’s Summer Publishing Institute, which this year is devoted to Book, Magazine, and Digital Publishing. The panel, which is made up of book bloggers, will discuss how publishers promote books and what we think of the state of publishing. Sorry, folks, I don’t think it’s open to the public. But hell, if it were? It would be a Twitter-extravaganza. For one thing, I think 60% of the panel is named “Sara(h)”, which adds fuel to the theory that there are 9 people total in New…

NPR has taken a look at romance again - this time in a profile of Elsie Washington, one of the very first authors of Black romance. You can click the “listen now” link at the top to hear the whole report. Thanks to Sara Nelson & Jessica Arant for the link. Hooray! The Harlequin Art Show has received coverage on CNN, which is awesome, and there’s more from curator Elizabeth Semmelhack: “I pawed through literally thousands of paintings,” curator Elizabeth Semmelhack said, adding that she saw apparent shifts in women’s historical desires began to emerge. “Rather than being retardataire [outdated],…

All hail the wondrous things about Wisconsin. There are many. And not just the Packers and cheese. Evidence: The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Library Nurse Romance Cover of the Week collection. Like nurse romance cover illustrations, with absurdly long, lithe, and monochromatic legs? This is your Mecca. I’m particularly fond of catwalking Luxury Nurse and the unnaturally-pigmented Redheaded nurse. [Thanks to Mary for the link.] Speaking of libraries, this Smithsonian magazine article about library special collections, which mentions the above Love Nurse Collection, is fascinating. (Also, I think “Tobacciana” would be a great name for a heroine set in a…

Bibliovore (great name) at Confessions of a Bibliovore noted that Donna Freitas, visiting professor of religion at Boston U. and YA author, published a lovely article in the School Library Journal highlighting her favorite “sweet, sexy romances” for the YA reader. While some of her choices I don’t agree with, she singles out some books I missed that are so interesting, I may have to go shopping asap. Speaking of awesome, the American Library Association has released the 2009 Reading List. Tops of the list in romance: The Spymaster’s Lady’, a book I enjoyed a hell of a lot. [Thanks…

Nikki Lomax-Larson of Military Spouse Magazine has a bit of a problem. She’s a big reader. That’s not the actual problem. Well, there’s multiple problems from where I sit. There’s her admission of secretly desiring to be the creme filling in a Weasley sandwich, and her statement that voracious childhood reading caused her to wear bifocals by third grade. And then there’s this paragraph, which is a light, moist, seven-layer cake of problems: But the one genre I never, ever touched was romance. I couldn’t bring myself to sample the “junk food” of the literary world. That was, until my…

At the press conference this morning, Amazon revealed the Kindle 2.0. The press release touts:
- New buttons make it easy to turn the page from any holding position.
It’s already easy to turn the page from any holding position. It’s easy to turn the page if you don’t mean to.
Heh. It’s not a bug, it’s a feature!

I’m curious enough to have a Google alert for my name. I admit it. But there’s very rarely anything in there that’s actually about me, because since the presidential race there is a MUCH more famous “Sarah” running around, and no matter how I configure it, Google wants to tell me alllll about Sarah Palin and what folks say about her. Usually the alerts have little to do with Smart Bitches and very little to do with romance novels. Until now! Want to win a subscription to The Week, a weekly print magazine roundup of news from a variety of…
