Links of Joy, Fuzzy Feelings, and Really Beautiful Men

November 07, 2010 | Sunday | 93 Comments

Want to grin? Have some happy, thoughtful links. An Ode to Emilie Loring, romance author. Thanks to Holly G. for that link. Q: Which romance authors (you can only name one) remain enduring favorites through every single book they wrote? New or older authors, doesn’t matter. (I predict the top three favorites from the comments will be Heyer, Roberts, and McMaster-Bujold. My choice is Julia Spencer-Fleming, mostly because I’m going through a palate-cleanse of mystery reading and I can’t stop turning back to her books to enjoy and savor her character building and small-world-building skills. Mills & Boon has a… read more »

Scrinnameless and The Sharing Knife: The Finale!

March 01, 2009 | Sunday | 28 Comments

Scrinnameless, who I call “Scrin” for short, is a 22 year-old geology student who is reading Lois McMaster Bujold’s The Sharing Knife: Beguilement. Bujold! (no, that is not going to get old any time soon) He finished the book! Chapter 11         So everyone’s warned Dag and Fawn away from each other. Apparently, Dag’s superior is afraid that if he opens himself up, he’ll take in love like a starving and thirsty man would take in food and water—and try to go too far, too fast.         Still, I know they’ll end up together,… read more »

Scrinnameless and The Sharing Knife: Intermission and Recap

February 28, 2009 | Saturday | 11 Comments

Scrinnameless, who I call “Scrin” for short, is a 22 year-old geology student who is curious about romance, and at my suggestion has taken to reading Lois McMaster Bujold’s The Sharing Knife: Beguilement. Bujold! (snrk) We have an intermission and recap of the book. I’m halfway through the book, so I’m finding it appropriate that I recapitulate my views on the book so far. World-building: Given that this is a very small part of the world, seen from the eyes of two people (usually), what I’ve seen is pretty limited. Most of it’s actually been about the Lakewalkers. Of course,… read more »

Scrinnameless and The Sharing Knife: Chapters 4-10

February 23, 2009 | Monday | 16 Comments

Scrinnameless, who I call “Scrin” for short, is a 22 year-old geology student who is curious about romance, and at my suggestion has taken to reading Lois McMaster Bujold’s The Sharing Knife: Beguilement. Here we have Chapters 4-10: Chapter 4 In which we find out about malices. And more about Dag. It’s a nice bit of monster-building, the malice. I could go on, but let’s say they’re thieves of life who start out small, learn as they grow, and can get nasty. Inherently evil, one might say. Found out where the title comes from. Apparently, sharing knives are the weapons… read more »

More Men Reading Romance: Scrinnameless discovers Bujold

February 16, 2009 | Monday | 81 Comments

A few weeks ago, Scrinnameless sent me word of a wonderful used bookstore in Mobile, Alabama. Turns out Scrin is a dude - and he later wrote to me: I think I’ve nerved myself enough to submit myself to the Will of the Bitchery. Who can suggest some good sf or fantasy romance to start me off on? As for about myself… I’m a 22-year-old college student in Mobile, Alabama, pursuing a degree in geology. I play video games. I read, naturally, all over science fiction and fantasy, along with odds and ends here and there. I have a thing… read more »

Guest Review: Cordelia’s Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold

August 14, 2008 | Thursday | 43 Comments

A few months ago, I asked y’all what book you would recommend to introduce romance to a Sci Fi/Fantasy reader who was curious about the genre. Robert, one of the tech support gurus at our host Esosoft, was curious romance, and based on your recommendations, I sent him a copy of Lois McMaster (aka McAwesome) Bujold’s Cordelia’s Honor, a two-in-one book that features Shards of Honor and Barrayar. I asked Robert what he thought, and this is his reply, in the form of an informal quick guest review from someone who loves fiction, has no experience with romance (except what… read more »

Lois McMaster Bujold’s Denvention 3 Speech: Full Of Awesome

August 12, 2008 | Tuesday | 24 Comments

Lois McMaster Bujold gave a Writer Guest of Honor Speech at Denvention 3 on 8 August about her experience as a writer crossing multiple genres, and it was full of awesome, puppies, win, and rainbow ponies. Her experiences with The Sharing Knife and her impressions of how romance and sf play nicely together and compliment one another are fascinating because her perspective is one from which we don’t necessarily see a lot of analysis: Romance and SF seemed to occupy two different focal planes, to steal another metaphor, this time from photography.  For any plot to stay central, nothing else… read more »
