Truths and Roses by Inglath Cooper

I found this book because of a Facebook ad. If you follow me on Twitter or are subscribed to the SBTB Facebook page, you saw me talking about it yesterday. Here's the ad:   This ad worked for me so well I was astonished. Hero description, heroine description, briefest plot summary with hints at the tropes to be used. I WAS SO THERE. Then I got a look at the cover. Beautiful! Looks…professional! Add to that the .99c price, and it was not difficult to click the ad, look at the book description, and click to buy. And judging from… read more »

HaBO-Thon: Cara, the Frenchman, and Her Best Friend

August 13, 2011 | Saturday | 3 Comments

This request comes from Librarian Emily, who is searching for a book on behalf of a patron: You are the experts, so I am coming to you. A patron asked me to find this romance book. She doesn’t know the title or author. This is all she has to go on: The main character’s name is Cara. She’s engaged to a Frenchman. Her male best friend set her up with said Frenchman, but really the best friend is in love with her. I have googled this up one side & down the other but I can’t seem to find it.… read more »

Bitch, Please. No, really. Please.

February 02, 2011 | Wednesday | 122 Comments

So here’s something I never expected from Bitch Magazine. Really. I’m sort of horrified and appalled and wondering if someone over there fell and hit their heads. Bitch posted their 100 YA books for the Feminist Reader list, and of course, like any thing that is (a) a list (b) adorned with the word “feminist” and (c) on the internet, there was lots of discussion. And disagreement. And expressions of disappointment. Some didn’t like that certain books were left off, and some didn’t like the books that were selected, particularly those that were sexually violent or challenging to the reader’s… read more »

Ellen Hopkins Book Winners

August 19, 2010 | Thursday | 3 Comments

Thank you to everyone who entered the contest to win a copy of Ellen Hopkins’ book “Tricks.” While the story of her disinvitation to the Humble, Texas, Teen Lit Fest has been picked up by a few news outlets, I don’t know if anyone from Humble has contacted her - but I hope that the end result is that she is invited back. And if that’s not possible, I hope every teen in Humble reads her book and sends a review to both the librarian who protested Hopkins’ inclusion, and the superintendent who made the decision to rescind her invite.… read more »

YA and Romance

August 10, 2010 | Tuesday | 82 Comments

Christine, a librarian, forwarded me a link to this article from the NY Times this past weekend: The Kids’ Books Are All Right, by Pamela Paul. Paul takes a look at adults craving the third installment of The Hunger Games, and who seek out YA books in general. The themes are serious and the discussions intense, but the books are fast-paced and fun. “A lot of contemporary adult literature is characterized by a real distrust of plot,” Grossman said. “I think young adult fiction is one of the few areas of literature right now where storytelling really thrives.” Y.A. may… read more »

Blogger Bundles on Pre-Order Today!

June 28, 2010 | Monday | 0 Comments

One of my favorite things that the Harlequin Digital Team has created is the Blogger Bundles. Different romance bloggers put together bundles of books from the past and present, and they’re great for discovering great reads from back then and right now. Today, three new ones went on pre-sale. Chosen by you, the readers, as the Harlequin books that hooked you on romance, this bundle features Anyone But You by Jennifer Crusie, Prince Joe by Suzanne Brockmann, The Millionaire’s Indecent Proposal by Emilie Rose, An Officer and a Gentleman by Rachel Lee and Keeping Annie Safe by Beverly Barton. There’s… read more »

Librarian Seeks GLBT Romance in Print

June 22, 2010 | Tuesday | 82 Comments

From awesome librarian Carrie comes this request: My library is doing a book display of GLBT titles, and I thought it would be fun if they included some romance. Anyone have fantastic GLTB romance to recommend? Her caveats: she’d need the books to be in print - which is tricky because so much GLBT romance is digital only - and she needs to hopefully order a few titles, so they have to be available. So, what do you recommend?   read more »

Best Link Evah

May 02, 2010 | Sunday | 16 Comments

From RWA Librarian of the Year Jennifer Lohmann (can you tell I’m still giddy about that? NO? I will endeavor to be MORE SUPER EXTRA DOUBLE GIDDY) (Tomorrow. I am le tired) comes this link. It’s so fun and awesome, it’s the whole entry: Hot Guys Reading Books. It was brought to her attention due to Jason Pinter’s post on (Huff)PoBooks about the fallacy that men don’t read. Now, the men I know absolutely do read. And I’ll be hiding around corners taking pictures of Hubby reading now. It’ll drive him nuts. read more »

What the Librarian Won: The Entries!

April 12, 2010 | Monday | 71 Comments

Little did I know that when I posted a contest celebrating Jennifer Lohmann’s win as Librarian of the Year from RWA, I’d set off a Photoshopping mania among librarians. Behold the entries for our contest. Jennifer and I will be picking the winner, but we are not above being swayed by your comments - so let us know which one you like the best! The winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to the bookstore of her choice AND will direct a $50 contribution to the library or Friends of the Library organization of her choice, plus a big ol’… read more »

What the Librarian Won: A Photoshop Contest in Honor of Jennifer Lohmann

April 07, 2010 | Wednesday | 18 Comments

In 2009, I went to Durham, NC, for a Bosoms book event organized by Jennifer Lohmann of the Durham County Public Library. It was easily one of the best Bosoms events I attended - she worked with the local Barnes & Noble to host the event, and the local RWA chapter came out as well. Y’all. THERE was a LINE. The best part was meeting Jennifer. She spends much of her time building knowledge, education and respect for the romance genre in her own library system, and among the library science students she teaches, and when I learned about her… read more »

Apps for Authors

October 28, 2009 | Wednesday | 10 Comments

Christine sent me this link, and for that I owe her a heaping ton of sanity, not just on my own behalf but on behalf of another mom in another waiting room. Check this out: Children’s author Elizabeth O. Dulemba has a new children’s book released as an app for the iPhone. For $1.99 you get a sliding page story, plus Elizabeth herself reading the pages to you. The child reading/listening to the book can keep their own pace turning the pages - and we all know how easy it is for a child to operate an iPhone. Freebird loved… read more »

Once Upon a Valentine’s by Holly Jacobs: A Guest Review by Test Driver Jennifer

September 06, 2009 | Sunday | 4 Comments

Before I begin the review in detail, I want to say something to Harlequin.  Thank you for my gift certificate!  While I’ve been a romance reader for years and years, I hardly ever read category novels.  Nothing against them personally, I just got most of my books from my library and we don’t buy that many category novels.  So, I didn’t read that many.  I can remember reading only a couple, from friends who wrote or for school papers. I regret that now. I am now a converted category reader.  I’m horrified to think of how much money I’ve given… read more »
