One promotional feature that many authors use in various ways is email. And I know that there are some who consider the newsletter akin to communication from the devil, and some who adore having author news in a digest format. Some authors email exclusive deals, and some maintain a digital mailing list to sent out alerts about sales and appearances in local stores or writing groups. Email is ubiquitous - most of us have it, so it makes sense to use it, particularly if you’re looking for contact, customer cultivation, and promotion. I was pondering the efficacy of email, and…

I just received the following email from Kinsella Media, LLC, in Washington DC: [We are] the court-approved Notice Provider in the Google Book Search Settlement. We are in charge of distributing information about the settlement to authors (and publishers) worldwide. The legal rights of authors who are your readers or members may be affected by the Settlement. Therefore we would very much appreciate it if you would share with them information about the Settlement, particularly recently extended key dates. I’ve attached a press release about the extended dates as well as the Summary Notice about the settlement. As an author…

If you missed the news, head on over and have a read. Big changes in the online romance review world. Jane from Dear Author has formed her own literary agency and entertainment law firm, and her first act of “business” is to represent the International Consortium of Heroes in their absolutely groundless lawsuit against us. They state that our reproduction of email messages from their internal email loop constitutes copyright infringement, and violates their privacy. We have documented permission, but alas, the details will have to be discussed at the hearing, as soon as it’s scheduled. In the meantime, we…

I hate DRM. And since it’s Read an eBook Week, I figure it would serve well to discuss one of the facets of digital publishing that stops people from trying out ebooks, after, of course, the high cost of the ebook readers: DRM. DRM is Digital Rights Management, or, more appropriately, Driving Readers Mad. The security wrapped around ebooks that allegedly prevents me from sharing them really just prevents me from owning the actual book itself. Given the various types of formats and the varying degrees of security embedded within them, DRM means I’m being sold a format and not…

em·bar·rass: v 1. To cause to feel self-conscious or ill at ease; disconcert. 2. To involve in or hamper with financial difficulties. 3. To hinder with obstacles or difficulties; impede. Sixteen bodrillion people forwarded me this link, so thank you to all of them: IT World says ebooks are taking off because women can buy erotica and romance without embarrassment. Specifically: “porn is blazing a path to a new media format.” Lest anyone think I’m quoting out of context, let me grab the two paragraphs that caught my eye. Barnes & Noble abandoned ebooks once, so why are they coming…

The random blockbuster generator yielded some outrageously fun entries. It has difficult to pick the winner.
But I put on my big girl panties and… did whatever you do with big girl panties on. Like pick winners!
First: Honorable Mentions go to:

When I redid the re-captioning of Wayne Jordan’s book from the Uncyclopedia definition of romance, the book itself caught my eye. The synopsis sounded very interesting, so I ordered it. Mason Sinclair is recovering from a terrible injury sustained in the line of duty when his mother tells him that the man the thought was his father was not, and that he has three brothers he never knew about. Lianne Thomas is undercover protecting a little boy and his mother. They’re both in Barbados. Could this potentially rock? It seemed to me that yes, oh yes, it could. Caribbean setting?…

In a lot of ways, the book is a very familiar and almost typical setup: Molly Jennings, a big city girl with secret, returns home to small mountain town, surrounded by old friends and familiar parental figures. Actual parents optional, some assembly required. Ben Lawson, the sheriff, has lived in Tumble Creek his whole life and has little patience for her secrets, or for his attraction to her. Sound familiar? I could name a few books that follow the plotline, especially the heavy mountain snows = oh noes, we’re snowed in—let’s break out the mulled cider and sex, eh? However!…
