All over the place, many of us are making final preparations to head over to RWA’s national convention in Orlando. Given my to-do list today, I figured it was about time we started drinking ourselves into a stupor with common tasks that prepare you for RWA National. And if you’ve never been, have a look at the fun - I hope you can join in next year. Manicure: 2 sips Pedicure: 2 sips Both at the same time, unable to turn a magazine page or even scratch your nose which OF COURSE itches: 5 sips Haircut: 1 sip Haircut, and…

Oh, the fun of a Caption That Cover when the cover is so completely barmy. Here, have another look: Ahh. Nothing like some sweet, busty WTFery in the morning, right? So, without further ado, the honorable mentions in our cover captioning contest. The entries ranged from… The domestic: Kathy: “Now look, this is how we hang the sheets at my mother’s house. Are you watching? See, it’s just that easy.” Laurie: This is the way we wash the sheets (wash the sheets, wash the sheets), this is the way we wash the sheets, so early in the morning. The silly:…

Jac asks for your help: I am in need of some help ladies! I read a book way long ago in the dark teenage years and am aching to re-read it. The only problem…I have no idea who wrote it, who published it, or any of the other important names (main characters, title, location etc.) But all is not lost; I feel it’s fairly identifiable based on a wondrous sex scene that shocked my teenage sensibilities to their prudish little toes! So there is angry sex all over this book, and one scene involves a champagne bottle. He is angry…

Did you know there’s a chapter of romance writers who are also veterans? Check out my favorite page on their website: The Before and After page with military photos and current photos as well. To all of you marvelous ladies, and to all those who have served in the armed forces of any country, Happy Veterans Day. So, here’s a question for you: which is your favorite military romance, and, which is your favorite romance written by a veteran? For me, military romance is a tough sell. There are some military romances that featured violence that still gives me the…

In other news of the digitally bookward today, Kindle has released a PC application that allows you to buy Kindle books without… actually owning a Kindle. It’s currently available for that oh-so-smexxy Windows 7, and with the app installed you can read Kindle books, download anything you’ve already purchased from your Kindle leased-titles library, and add and synchonize notes to and from your Kindle app on iPhone and iTouch. The new upgrade to Kindle for iPhone or Blackberry adds that notetaking and annotation functionality to the phone, so now whatever you’re reading is accessible with your notes and bookmarks on…

ETA: 13 May: Please note, this comment thread is so amazing and interesting, but because we’re talking about series and when readers stopped reading and why (or why not), it can and does get spoiler-y. Proceed at your own risk, be ye warned, herein be spoilers, yarr. On Tuesday at the Bosoms booksigning at the Clifton Commons Barnes & Noble, I got into a thought-provoking discussion with Sydney, Marisa, Kiersten, and the other ladies who came (who told me they lurk and never comment - I didn’t want to embarrass them but hi, folks!) about what makes us break up…

I’m working on building a site for myself - well, I’m not working on it. Moxie is working on it. But I’m building a site that will host more info about me as unofficial man titty media pundit, with workshop ideas, speaking topics, and general mayhem and hilarity. I figure, better to place that info in a separate venue since most of you fabulously dressed ladies come to the hot pink palace of Bitchery for the romance discussion, not the Sarah self-pimping. I’m squidgy about the self-pimping enough as it is. I’m having a ball with one of the design…

My understanding of historical fiction is that the audience of readers expects just about every morsel, aside from the fictional existence of the protagonists, to be verifiable or at least highly researched and therefore likely fact. Donna Russo Morin’s book is nothing if not indefatigably researched. Readers experience the entirety of Kind Louis XIV’s court, from the tightly intricate manners and expectations of deportment, which ranged from who had a chair with arms and who could sit in the presence of whom, to the behavior of the courtiers, which, if you’re at all sensitive- Well, let me start there: if…

Seriously, this was agonizing. Candy and I have to thank each of you who worked your asses off creating some holy shit hilarious videos, from live action heroines and parodies to slick animation and incredibly clever puns. Well played, y’all, well played. You are awesome. So choosing between you guys was tough. Points were assigned to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place selections and the judges let me know their selections for each spot. Then we added in your poll results from this week. And in the end, the scores were close, but the winner was obvious. So without further ado…

Yay Doc! Yay Turtle! Yay Heyer! Part 4: Chapters 14 through 19 May it please the Bitchery to know that immediately after writing my previous post for SB Sarah, I sat down to read the next chapters of Heyer’s novel and found chapters 14 and 15 to be positively delightful, by far the strongest so far. The first of this pair was genuinely hilarious, betraying hints of an almost farcical humor, perhaps not unlike that underlying Heyer’s other works the SBTB commenters are always talking about. The second of these chapters sees the maturing of Heyer’s subtly exquisite characterization of…

Need another look at the tree? No? Well, let’s get to the winners, then. Boy, oh boy,, did you guys Stand and Deliver when it came to cootch-tastic holiday songs. Holy crap. Honorable mention to Kaishai for I’m dreaming of a white hoo-hoo and notably “Bonkin’ around the Vulva Tree. The actual song officially became 200% more bearable. Honorable mention also to AQ for the absolutely stunning version of “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear,” particularly for the use of the word “sapid.” Melissandre gets mad props for instructing the Merry Gentlemen how to make the ladies more merry. Way back in the day, years and years ago in internet time anyway, there were Magic Hoff Posters of humor, vitality and strength - not unlike The Hoff himself. I had the winners all picked out, and thought to myself, “Self, why don’t you find someone at Hoff’s HQ and see if he’d personally autograph some Fine Hoff Swag or give you a Cease & Desist email or something?” Note to self: stop making things complicated by trying to harass busy celebrities during the holidays when they are busy being celebrities and traveling a lot. So, pardon the unavoidable delay:…
