Day 2 of RomCon began early and somewhat stressful. Our Reader Roundtable was scheduled for 9am, but when we got there, with about 15 or so people in the room, we were told there was a small sign on the door that our panel had been moved to 10am in a totally different room. We had no idea there’d been a change, so we held the panel at 9 for the people in the room, and then again at 10 for the people who came to the second scheduled session. Some awesome people attended both (thank you!). The 9 am…

Usually with any conference or event I attend, there’s always one memory or item I remember best, something that sort of encapsulates the entire event. Sometimes, it’s not a good thing (Pittsburgh’s RT, while hosted by my home town, was a hot mess of groping and asthma attacks for many) and sometimes it’s something outside the script, like at RT in Orlando, when Beth Ciotta turned to Heather Graham and remarked that she couldn’t believe Heather’s daughter, who had just danced onstage, was no longer 3 years old. That moment reminded me that although many people disagree about RT and…

At 4:30 pm on Thursday 29 April, MULLETGASM will begin! KristieJ will be wearing THIS WIG: In the bar! With much revelry and merriment! I believe she is bringing a flannel shirt. And I, bearer of The Mullet Wig if TSA does not confiscate it, am here to tell you, and please don’t tell anyone, that The Mullet Wig shipped WITH ITS OWN HAIRNET. Only the finest hairnetted mullets will satisfy the international incident that was MULLET MANIA US vs. CANADA. Man, can anything be more awesome!? YES! MULLETGASM in the BAR PART ONE. Because there will be MORE MULLETGASM…

That might be the best headline I’ve written yet. After frenzied voting and trash talking and mullet admiration all around, let’s tally the votes. Over at KristieJ’s site, where Canadian mullets brought it and brought it long and hard,Team USA gathered 142 votes, and Team Canada gathered 102. Over at the hot pink palace of Bitchery, where His Majesty, The Mullet King Billy Ray Cyrus held court, Team Canada picked up 307 votes, while Team USA gathered 784. So, the winner: Team USA, 926 to 409. Which means KristieJ is going to be sporting for national Canadian pride, Ye Olde…

Last call for your votes on Mullet Mania: US vs. CANADA. Dog the Bounty Hunter and Billy Ray Cyrus are facing off against many fine spandex-wearing Canadians, plus Keifer Sutherland over at KristieJ’s Ramblings on Romance.
In the mean time, the mullet wig has arrived in my house. I’m having a hard time refraining from wearing it everywhere.

Y’all. KristieJ is CHEATING. She ADMITS IT. She’s CHEATING in the mullet competition! Oh, the shame the shame. She thinks a pre-glitter vampire Keifer Sutherland in a mullet is going to top TEAM USA?! Ha. I give you the much-suggested Dog the Bounty Hunter. I didn’t want to bring him out unless necessary. But Billy Ray + Dog? It is SO on. I mean, come on. He has shells in his mullet. Oceanic aquatic life is supported by the power of his mullet. To say nothing of the Luuuuuuurve™ baby, the Luuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrve™. The Dog mullet: you can’t beat it. You…

The new design for the Romance Writer’s Report, official publication of the RWA, is pretty freaking sweet. I’ve taken to calling the issues by the stock image used on the cover (which is usually overlaid with text from a female writer of romance literature, like Austen, or, in the case of this month’s issue, Bronte) so the following commentary is from the Fishnets Issue. There’s two articles of note that I wanted to give a hearty ‘WOO HOO!’ about. First, Carrie Lofty penned a rather lovely article entitled “The Trials and Triumphs of Unusual Historicals,” and aside form the general…

Five words that might save your life: Beware the Chocolate Willy Spread. Anyone else see an erotic suspense novel in the making? She’s trying to hunt down the criminal who poisoned her best friend; he’s the cop who has seen it all… until chocolate-dipped bananas were introduced to the menu. [Thanks to Becky for the link.] The BBC hosts a review of The Jewel of Medina by blogger Shelina Zahra Janmohamed, and it tests me sorely to move past her first sentence without putting my fist through the monitor: The Jewel of Medina is a chest-heaving, brassiere-busting book of outrageously…

Many, many people take photos at RWA. And you’ve seen really, really good ones at other sites, with beautiful folks in ball gowns noshing on all the chocolate in the universe at the RITA reception, authors meeting happy fans, and people queuing up to have books signed at the literacy signing. I don’t have many of those.
What do I have? LOLRWAs. Get ready. They’re terrible. Enjoy!
ETA: I forgot - many of these pictures were taken by Angie James. Thanks Angie!
