Say “Gumpy” to Me

August 23, 2010 | Monday | 77 Comments

I was in the car a few days ago and the Beatles’ All You Need is Love came on the radio. My sons love the Beatles, so everyone was singing along, but I was giggling in my seat so much Hubby asked me what I was laughing at. Of course, when you describe a book scene to someone who hasn’t read the book, the scene is NEVER as funny, but when I hear that song, I think of one of the final scenes of Julia Spencer-Fleming’s I Shall Not Want wherein a crew of folks, including the heroine, are driving… read more »

Ongoing Series and Happy Ever After

“Love, he thought as he held her to his heart, was an agony beyond compare.” -Raphael Archangel’s Kiss by Nalini Singh There are two series I follow and cannot get enough of that focus on one couple in subsequent books. Rather than having related protagonists in each book, these series follow the same protagonists. Many of you are huge fans of J.D. Robb’s in Death series, which follwos Eve and Roarke. My two are Julia Spencer-Fleming’s Miller’s Kill series, which features Clare Fergusson and Russ Van Alstyne, and Nalini Singh’s Archangel series, with Raphael and Elena. While thinking about my… read more »

The Bookmatcher: Dangerous Landscapes

November 03, 2009 | Tuesday | 73 Comments

We’re starting a new feature here at Smart Bitch HQ. I was having a lively email conversation with Billie Bloebaum, who is the book buyer for Powell’s in the Portland airport, and she mentioned how much she enjoyed handselling books she knew were wonderpants but not as widely known as other more prominent bestselling pants. I mentioned that I’d never had a bookstore employee handsell me a book in a store, and she about fell over. This handselling thing is an art, and with the consolidation of bookstores and the loss of smaller independents, it’s an endangered art. Some bookstore… read more »

A Fountain Filled with Blood by Julia Spencer-Fleming

At this point, I’ve become a hyperventilating freakshow about this series. I read all six in a marathon of reading and staying up late, and I’ve passed the name of the author on to anyone who stands still long enough. I’ve read the first one three times, and am re-reading the second. Not only has reading these books given me a lot to think about in terms of what it is I like so much about romance - and conversely, why I’m enjoying this series so much - but I’m also giving my brain a sort of spring-cleaning by jumping… read more »

In the Bleak Midwinter by Julia Spencer-Fleming

March 17, 2009 | Tuesday | 22 Comments

Jane used to joke that it was hilarious to her how often it seemed I was living under a very large, very heavy rock, since it was clear I had no idea what was going on around me. It’s true. What my rock is cooking: let me show you it. So while I knew about the Julia Spencer-Fleming series, I’d never read them, mostly because character relationships that carry on over multiple books tend to wear me out, and drain too much of my memory, and because I fear, in the context of a mystery series, that while the crime… read more »

It’s hot and stormy. How about some free books?

June 06, 2008 | Friday | 29 Comments

It’s hot in the northeast, freakishly stormy in the plains, and just plain summer just about everywhere else. So, what better thing to do that read free ebooks? If you’ve been thinking about trying Julia Spencer-Fleming’s highly lauded series in the Rev. Clare Fergusson/Russ Van Alstyne mystery series (known in my brain as Rev. Kickypants and Detective Angsty Thundershorts), which, in June, reaches book #6, here’s your chance. In a move that is rather awesome in its simple brilliance, Macmillan is offering the first two books of the series from today until 12 June for free. Yes! Free! So if… read more »
