Sometimes when I squee about a book, I want to jump up and down and yell and breathlessly tell you how amazing I thought something was. This is the same level of appreciation, but the opposite reaction: this book (and the accompanying film) knocked my heart out of my chest, made me tear up, and made me want to grab anyone who doesn’t understand how avid readers feel about books and make them watch it until they Get It. Summary: Morris Lessmore finds himself blown away and rendered colorless by a storm, and through books finds purpose, healing, and the…

It’s time to fill out your brackets for the 2010 DABWAHA tournament of books. If you’re not familiar with it, the DABWAHA is a bracket-style tournament that echoes the NCAA basketball tourney, only instead of college basketball, we’re using reader votes to determine the book of the year. I’ve got a lot of DABWAHA news, in convenient bullet-list format. The reader nominations are in - and each category is now complete with 8 nominees, one in each picked by readers! I am going to post the top 10 reader nominations in each category - because you need more books to…

So Borders opened an e-bookstore along with apps for Android and Blackberry to go with the existing apps for iPods and iPhones. On one hand, there is indication that Borders will also step up the in-store ebook offerings (without specific mention as to HOW they’re going to do that). And on the other hand, there’s Mike Cane’s take on the Border’s e-bookstore, which focuses on the Borders Inc President Mike Edwards’ comment that “We’ll take market share just by turning it on.” I agree with Cane: that comment is just flush with the 0_o and the ??! and WTFery spread…

Thursday 17 June I attended The Big Money’s “Untethered” conference, all about publishing in the tablet era (0_o). As predicted, it was high in unintentional comedy, with some sessions that I hope are made available online for their unparalleled awesomeness. Be warned: this entry is HELLA LONG but the sections about NPR (awesome) and the device panel where folks were dismissive of the consumer who asked a question about ebook pricing (me) are probably the juicy parts if you want to skip ahead. Don Graham, CEO of Washington Post, began the sessions by speaking from the perspective of a reader…

If all goes well, tomorrow I will be attending Big Money’s Untethered conference, all about publishing on tablet media. I haven’t received a registration confirmation despite being a media partner, woe is I. I think (I hope anyway) that they’re defining “tablet” to its broadest definition to include not only iPads but also smart phones, digital reading devices, and the like, because if it’s all iPad, all day, that’ll get boring in a hurry. But the focus on publishing should be interesting, particularly since the speakers include Sarah Chubb, CEO of Conde Nast, Brian Murray, the CEO of HarperCollins, and…

This summer, if you’re looking for books to read, I have a whole lot of fun planned, and I hope you’ll join me. I’ve partnered with AllRomanceEbooks.com to do a Sizzling Summer Book Club of great romance reads, and I’m so excited I can barely sit still. In Yiddish, they call that “shpilkis.” Everyone wants a great summer read, and romance is perfect for summer reading - so why not a whole season of good books, right? Right. Here’s how the Summer Book Club will work: I’ll announce the selection, and folks will have plenty of time to buy and…

Every now and again in our long and storied history of being cable subscribers, Hubby and I have subscribed to HBO and other cable network packages. Every time we did, it was ridiculously expensive given how much time we actually watch tv, let alone HBO, and even more preposterous was HOW MANY HBO CHANNELS we received. Honestly, I think at one time we had 12! Once we had a TiVO digital recorder, we didn’t want HBO so much any more, because by then there were some series out on DVD that we could rent, and we had the ability to…

Congratulations to Larissa Ione, whose book Ecstasy Unveiled won the 2010 DABWAHA! Larissa will receive a $200 gift certificate from Jane and Sarah for a spa near her home - all the better to relax after all that vote mania! And big congratulations to the bracket winners! To bracket champion Pamela Sinclair: an Apple iPad and a $100 GC for ebooks to fill up the new ebook reader from AllRomance eBooks and OmniLit. WOO HOO! And to the worst bracket: TT Thomas wins for finishing in 845th place, and will receive a selection of books from the Oddshots bloggers, Meljean…

I’ve spent the last three days playing with my iPad. While there are many very savvy and very insightful reviews of the device out there, this probably isn’t one of them. It’s more of a log of my experience trying the device and the things I noticed as I set it up (Oh my God the Setting Up and the Waiting for the Setting Up) and tried to read on it, and my thoughts after a few days of doing so. My apologies in advance for the length of this review, but I think it communicates a lot about a…

When the wireless iRex was announced online, with the news that it would be available at Best Buy online an eventually in stores, I was so supremely curious. Even though the price tag is still way high, and way out of reach for most people, I ordered one thinking that if it would solve my Kindle problems, and perform the way I wanted a wireless reader to perform, it might be a better option for many. Currently, I’m using Kindle II for most of my reading. I was using a Sony 505, but it had a very sad and unfortunate…

I am underwhelmed. Here’s my initial thoughts on Apple’s big announcement, culled from Notepad and Twitter. - iPad?! Really?! REALLY? Gosh, I’m sorry I no longer have a Nook now. They would have been great partners. The iPad, now available in Light, Maxi, and Super (8Gb, 16Gb 64Gb)? As Tessa Dare said, are there NO women at Apple who could have given them the heads up (HA) that this is a BAD NAME? Please someone tell me they’ll just name the next device iVAGINA and be done with it? Is this how they’re targeting female technology consumers and book readers?…
