Friday Videos Let It Be

December 24, 2010 | Friday | 14 Comments

Big thanks to Hubby and to his friend Matt for this amazing bizarre video featuring ... well, I’m not actually sure what it’s FOR but it has a LOT of people in it. Just watch it. All six minutes. My two favorite comments, from Matt: “I never wanted it to end,” and from someone on YouTube: “This is what you see before you die.” Someday, you might be in a video for a Norwegian (I think) television station (I think) as a “spaghetti western filmer.” Because that would be excellent and winning awesome. Can anyone tell me what this is?… read more »

Say “Gumpy” to Me

August 23, 2010 | Monday | 77 Comments

I was in the car a few days ago and the Beatles’ All You Need is Love came on the radio. My sons love the Beatles, so everyone was singing along, but I was giggling in my seat so much Hubby asked me what I was laughing at. Of course, when you describe a book scene to someone who hasn’t read the book, the scene is NEVER as funny, but when I hear that song, I think of one of the final scenes of Julia Spencer-Fleming’s I Shall Not Want wherein a crew of folks, including the heroine, are driving… read more »

Link-a-palooza!

June 23, 2010 | Wednesday | 8 Comments

Jill Shalvis (whose books I love like things that I love a lot) has an entry on her blog that’s full of warm fuzzy awesome: What terms of endearment do you love? And which do you love reading? Me, I’m totally up for calling Hubby “schnookums” or “thunderpants” but I doubt I’d read that in any romance novel. Second, from John, who rocks it hard in this blog entry, a cover. What do you think that erect tree in the background means? That THIS MAN is MAN ENOUGH to BREASTFEED? This link is a bit older - a week or… read more »

Best Link Evah

May 02, 2010 | Sunday | 16 Comments

From RWA Librarian of the Year Jennifer Lohmann (can you tell I’m still giddy about that? NO? I will endeavor to be MORE SUPER EXTRA DOUBLE GIDDY) (Tomorrow. I am le tired) comes this link. It’s so fun and awesome, it’s the whole entry: Hot Guys Reading Books. It was brought to her attention due to Jason Pinter’s post on (Huff)PoBooks about the fallacy that men don’t read. Now, the men I know absolutely do read. And I’ll be hiding around corners taking pictures of Hubby reading now. It’ll drive him nuts. read more »

Friday Videos Love the Hoff

October 02, 2009 | Friday | 12 Comments

To Luisa go all the thanks for all the Hoff. Behold, the literal video for “Hooked on a Feeling” originally recorded by Blue Suede, then covered (badly) by The Hoffster. True story: when Hubby and I got married, this was our “first dance” song - the real one, not the Hoff one - and then our “last dance” was our wedding song, also not by the Hoff. So I freaking love this song, even if it’s Hoff flying over a weird guy with a cube. read more »

Williams Sonoma and Harlequin Books on Sale

July 11, 2009 | Saturday | 4 Comments

Over on Achewood, Williams-Sonoma’s catalog is being rewritten—romance style. I wheezed at this one: What’s the sound of a million Italian caper bowls gettin’ sold? The sound of this piece of paper, existing. I live near a Williams-Sonoma, and the window adverts drive me batty: “Now that I’ve found love, what more do I need?” “Oh, you absolutely need a $45 lemon zester, right, Hubby?” *crickets* [Thanks to Brandy for the link.] And heads up Harlequin lovers with eReader devices (like Palm, Blackberry, or iPhone). I have news from HQN-HQ about a sale at eReader.com: Harlequin ebook bundles for the… read more »

Happy Valentine’s Day

February 14, 2009 | Saturday | 8 Comments

Hubby and Jane collaborated to Buy me a Romance for Valentine’s Day. Hubby said it was the hardest gift he’s had to pick out: “What do you get for the romance reader who’s read everything?” So in my inbox this morning was a gift certificate for His Lordship’s Mistress by Joan Wolf, which I’ve never read, but Jane recommended as one of her favorites. May your day make you feel as loved and appreciated as mine has so far. And it’s not even noon - woo hoo! read more »

From the “Oh, For Fuck’s Sake” Department

February 10, 2009 | Tuesday | 111 Comments

Nikki Lomax-Larson of Military Spouse Magazine has a bit of a problem. She’s a big reader. That’s not the actual problem. Well, there’s multiple problems from where I sit. There’s her admission of secretly desiring to be the creme filling in a Weasley sandwich, and her statement that voracious childhood reading caused her to wear bifocals by third grade. And then there’s this paragraph, which is a light, moist, seven-layer cake of problems: But the one genre I never, ever touched was romance.  I couldn’t bring myself to sample the “junk food” of the literary world.  That was, until my… read more »

Hot off the Inbox Press: Kindle 2.0

February 09, 2009 | Monday | 29 Comments

At the press conference this morning, Amazon revealed the Kindle 2.0. The press release touts: - New buttons make it easy to turn the page from any holding position. It’s already easy to turn the page from any holding position. It’s easy to turn the page if you don’t mean to. Heh. It’s not a bug, it’s a feature! read more »

Men Reading Romance

February 08, 2009 | Sunday | 19 Comments

Men who read romance are among the hottest men around, in my opinion. Here’s an email from a happy romance reader whose husband appreciates the genre: [W]ith regard to men reading the Romance genre, let me share this: Among other things, my husband holds a double Ph.D. in political science and economics, speaks five languages, is a member of the (exceedingly boring to me) international heraldry society (he can interpret most any coat of arms at a glance), daily scans several international newspapers (in their language) and I consider him to be one of the most intelligent men I have… read more »

There Needs to be More Football Romance

February 02, 2009 | Monday | 33 Comments

Susan Elizabeth Phillips has a marvelous series of books all set around a professional football team, but really, the role of the football announcer has not been sufficiently explored in romance fiction. For one thing, as YA author Carrie Jones pointed out on her blog, there is no shortage of somewhat bizarre, certainly ridiculous and potentially explicit things that football announcers say. Madden especially. He’s a big pink turducken of vaguely erotic commentary. My favorites from Jones’ list: “The guys love him. He puts them in different positions and they love him.” And: “He’s looking for holding and that’s all… read more »

DocTurtle Reads More Heyer

December 26, 2008 | Friday | 70 Comments

DocTurtle, the math professor with the golden compass and a long, long winter break, is back with more Heyer. Part 3: Chapters 9 through 13 Oh, the intrigue!  This most recent installment of my Regency Romance Cliff’s Notes finds Bab flirting with Peregrine Taverner, her brother flirting with Lucy Devenish, Charles more and more busied by the buzzing of a quick-coming war, and the Duke of Wellington continuing to bitch about how ill-prepared is his infamous army for Napoleon “Don’t Call Me ‘Boney’” Bonaparte’s onslaught of Belgium. read more »

Friday Videos Wish You a Hoffy Holiday

December 26, 2008 | Friday | 16 Comments

When Hubby and I got married, our first dance was Blue Suede’s Hooked on a Feeling. For that reason alone, this particular version makes me dance like a fool. The addition of Hoff goodness only makes it more campy, more awesome, more… surreal. What is UP with the snowboarding on a toboggan? And why is he in a fjord? Ah, forget it. I should not question the Hoff, nor his majesty. read more »

The Future of Book Publishing

December 11, 2008 | Thursday | 7 Comments

David Nygren gives a bullet point list of his vision of the future of book publishing. I’m going to have to go back and read again x4, but the salient points that made me go “yep!” were: - Yes. iTunes for books. Amazon is trying to be it, but with the last few days’ delays in Kindle transmissions (Kindle does not say “Nom.” Kindle says, “Hur? You didn’t send me a file. No, you didn’t!”) and the proprietary content and format, it won’t happen. - Small pub good. [Thanks to Smart Bitch Hubby for the link.] read more »

Thanks.

November 27, 2008 | Thursday | 16 Comments

I’m thankful for many things, especially for you. For you who send me links to Large Water Butts and disgusting cookbooks and weird Friday Videos and all the man titty I could ever wish for, and for you who come and read every day, perhaps never commenting but always stopping by. Back when Candy and I started our site, we had four readers: her, me, Hubby, and her friend in Singapore. We never expected that we’d have this incredible growing readership, or the community of stabbingly sharp, smart women who adore romances as much as we do, who argue respectfully… read more »
