College Boys by Daisy Harris

April 26, 2012 | Thursday | 26 Comments

I was intrigued by the description of this book:  When soccer star Chris Fischer moves next door to an openly gay classmate, he doesn't realize the wall between their rooms will be so thin he'll hear his neighbor's every move. But soon he and Peter become friends, and Chris is intrigued—imagining what happens on the other side of the wall. Active on the Queer Student Council, Peter Cohen wishes he wasn't so damn hot for his straight neighbor. He can't tell if Chris is flirting or in denial or what, but Chris's innocent overtures lure Peter into flirtation that throws… read more »

Moving in Rhythm by Dev Bentham

March 21, 2012 | Wednesday | 27 Comments

I first encountered this book when I noticed a conversation on Twitter about the main character, Mark. I don't even remember who was talking about it - it might have been CheekyReads or Smexybooks or both - but something in the conversation caught my attention, and when I read the description, I felt like I'd been waiting for this book and didn't know I had been. This is a character I couldn't wait to read about. A hero who looks like an alpha, but is terribly, wrenchingly shy? A quiet and honorable guy who looks like a giant, muscly alpha… read more »

Strawberries for Dessert, by Marie Sexton

October 28, 2010 | Thursday | 26 Comments

I found this book a few weeks ago when I noticed that it was one of the top reviewed titles at All Romance, and I wondered what the reviewers liked about it. Most of the comments focused on the unique emotional journey of the protagonists, and boy howdy, were they right. Jonathan Kechter is a workaholic living a rather lonely life after a bad breakup. When he is set up on a blind date with Cole Fenton, it’s a total mess: Jonanthan’s cell phone won’t stop ringing - and of course all of the calls are ones he “has to… read more »

Welcome to GLBT RWA Chapter, Rainbow Romance Writers

May 05, 2009 | Tuesday | 57 Comments

If you missed the great awesome news: RWA has a new chapter, the Rainbow Romance Writers, a GLBT Romance chapter. WOO HOO! How awesome is that? Mazel tov! I first heard the news from RWA President Diane Pershing at the Princeton romance conference, though she asked at the time that the announcement not be made until the final details had been filed - so I didn’t mention it then. There was, however, applause and squeeing at the time. No comment on who exactly was squeeing. So while I was waiting for the official word from RWA, which went out 1… read more »

Oleander House by Ally Blue

January 28, 2009 | Wednesday | 21 Comments

I downloaded this book as a free Kindle offer from Sam Hain and read it while commuting. Even on the bus at 6am I was creeped out at the start of the novel. It was creepy, bizarre and in the beginning it gave me goosebumps. By the end, my eyebrows were permanently raised. Oleander House has a terrible history. The current owner is sure something is haunting the place (no shit Sherlock) after an unseen creature bites a young child touring the house as a local historic property, and the bite becomes infected with an unknown substance, killing the child… read more »

Euphemsims: What What?

January 14, 2009 | Wednesday | 67 Comments

Have you ever wondered to yourself, “Self, I wonder what Sarah thinks about at 6:40 am before she’s had caffeine?” Well, wonder no more. Here’s a sample! Following the discussion during our last liveblog about the use of the word “prostate” during a sex scene in K.A. Mitchell’s Custom Ride, I got to thinking about the word “prostate.” Within the context of m/m romance and sex scenes, the prostate is big pimpin, as stimulation thereof can yield mad happy pants, if you know what I’m saying. Yet the discussion we had questioned the use of the word itself, since it’s… read more »

Saturday Night Live-Blog: Custom Ride by K.A. Mitchell

January 03, 2009 | Saturday | 4 Comments

Head on over to DearAuthor.com tonight at 9 EST/8CST for another Saturday Night Live-Blog where Jane and I face off and simultaneously read and discuss a romance. Tonight’s book is a m/m short story - we’ve decided short stories and novellas work best for the format - Custom Ride by K.A. Mitchell. Joining us will be two additional readers: Jane’s friend Jawk and Jace, who will also be reading along and commenting to give us an allegedly authentic gay male perspective. I presume they are actually (a) male and (b) gay, since they’ll be with Jane and I’ll be far… read more »

More Creative Charitable Initiatives

I rock a massive crush on Dan Savage. If I met him, I’d stutter like a bad rap song from the early 80’s played on a record player bouncing in the back of a pickup truck on a dirt road. Srsly. So Dan’s latest efforts to fundraise on behalf of those campaigning against anti-gay-marriage amendments to the state constitutions of California and Florida just rock my socks. (Also, as a related note: GO CONNECTICUT GO. You’re cooler than Jersey. I had no idea. BOOYAH!) Savage’s efforts include personal replies to any questions from donors who give more than $25. Plus: … read more »

Caught Running by Madeleine Urban and Abigail Roux

August 19, 2008 | Tuesday | 28 Comments

I received an email from a reader who said, “I am interested in you reviewing a personal favorite of mine…. I’m eager to hear your thoughts about a book that, in a very short time, I’ve come to love.” Such a simple endorsement caught my attention, and I read it in a marathon session that ended with me straddling a running treadmill, unable to accept that I’d clicked “next page” and there WAS NO NEXT PAGE. It was over! And I was left with no more of a wonderfully sweet (in a good way) romance, though I was consoled by… read more »

Erotica Writer Zane: I’m Facing Discrimination

May 14, 2008 | Wednesday | 140 Comments

Thanks to the multiple Bitchery readers who forwarded this over. Erotica author and editor Zane emailed a DC-area email loop the following account of how her latest book is facing an uphill battle in terms of finding places in which to advertise. Why? Because it’s Black erotica? Nope. Because it’s gay. Specifically, according to Zane’s email, lesbian erotica. Read on Zane’s Apology for the Status of Today’s World At first, I was going to hold my tongue about this issue; I really was. When one of the biggest National chain bookstores informed my publicist that my latest book was “too… read more »

Phyllida: You Came A Long Way, Ma’am!

April 29, 2008 | Tuesday | 16 Comments

Back in July of 2006, I reviewed Phyllida and the Brotherhood of Philander, which at the time was published by the author, Ann Herendeen, through AuthorHouse. Now, three years later, HarperCollins is publishing Phyllida , on sale today at bookstores every-freaking-where. How is this cool? Well, not only did it go from self-pub to HarperCollins, but Phyllida is a gay Regency, with a m/m/f setup.  The book is garnering a good amount of attention - which is awesome - and both romance sites and bloggers are reviewing and celebrating it. How freaking cool! Congrats to Herendeen, and to Phyllida, who… read more »
