The picking of the bestests and worstest covers MIGHT TAKE ME THAT LONG. Thanks to Karen for the heads up. Seriously. The worst cover selection this year was a choice between Bad Photoshop, Bad Stock Images, Bad Art Design… read more »

Taken to the Limit, by Nico Rosso

November 30, 2010 | Tuesday | 18 Comments

I received an email alerting me to this novella, and since I’m in a novellaly kind of reading mood, I grabbed it from Liquid Silver. According to Liquid Silver CEO Tina Burns, the distribution to all ports of sale hasn’t occurred yet, but it will soon. So for right now, it’s only available from the LS website. I read the excerpt on the website, and couldn’t stop thinking about it, so I bought it the following day. It’s a quick read, but a good one, of adventure, action, kickingassery, and hot attraction. Weightlessness holds a LOT of curious appeal, all… read more »

Heart of the Volcano by Imogen Howson

September 29, 2009 | Tuesday | 9 Comments

My internal monologue while reading this novella went as follows for the first third: “Oh, now that’s different.” “Ok, cool.” “Huh. That’s some smart use of rock and fire imagery.” “Ok, now that’s COOL.” “This is really, really different.” I love cool and different. The story opens on Aera’s final test as a priestess of fire: she must enter a labyrinth of the volcano, pass through multiple gates to the eye of the maze, and find a criminal who has committed blasphemy. Her job is to kill him to appease the Fire God before the priests release the lava to… read more »

Sony 505 Review: A Report from De

I think I’m a little different than most of the other test drivers. I’ve had an eBookwise reader for 5 or 6 years, that I used to use constantly. In December 2007, I bought an EEE PC 701 4G, the first of these new fangled ‘netbooks,’ and switched most of my ereading to it. Going into this test drive, I didn’t need to be convinced of the gloriousness of ereading, I was looking for a chance to convince others. My initial impressions: The quick start guide is a mess. Also, it’s not really useful. Or quick. It is a starting… read more »

Jacob Weisberg on Competition and Writing Online

July 23, 2009 | Thursday | 5 Comments

This interview with Jacob Weisberg, former editor of Slate, rocked my socks in a huge way. Weisberg nails it when talking about writing online, and the difference in audience expectation: DIA: Do you feel people write differently for the web than they do for print? Mr Weisberg: If they don’t, they don’t succeed online. Writing that’s native to the web is different in ways that are crucial but subtle enough that you can miss them if you conceive of your audience as reading a printed product. The tone of good web writing grows out of email. It’s more direct, personal,… read more »
