Johanna Lindsey: Which One First?

August 11, 2011 | Thursday | 60 Comments

More ebooks have been released from Avon, including Hearts Aflame, which is their current .99c offering (Amazon | BN | WORD | Kobo). This book is a classic medieval Lindsay. While I am not as big a fan of medieval -set romances, I know this book has some fans. ESPECIALLY since the original cover looked like THIS: read more »

Mano a Mano en el Bano: A Recap from RedHeadedGirl

July 26, 2011 | Tuesday | 53 Comments

It is a total freaking shame that I was at the Costco all afternoon waiting on my tires, which were being changed, rotated, massaged with hot stones and eucalyptus oil, and then waxed in intimate places, or at least I assume so because it took a long ass time, during which I contemplated the possible need for a 48 gallon drum of ketchup. I missed the Old Spice Guy vs. Fabio showdown - but fear not. Red Headed Girl was there to watch the whole thing: Look guys, it’s no secret that I have a soft spot for Fabio.  Maybe… read more »

Fabio is New Old Spice Guy?

July 25, 2011 | Monday | 97 Comments

Many of you have emailed me with the alert that His Hair and Chesticleness, Fabio, is the new Old Spice Guy. Previous incarnations of the Old Spice Guy were the marvelously smooth Isaiah Mustafa. Alas, Fabio doesn’t quite have the same appeal. For one thing, I can’t quite understand him. For another, there’s a totally different attitude with Fabio’s spots vs. Mustafa’s. Here’s an example: Fabio seems to be ... I have no idea what he’s doing here: I will admit, this one made me giggle: though the explanation suggests they’re also mocking Fabio’s use of language: “Smell the smell… read more »

Season of the Sun by Catherine Coulter - A Guest review by R.

September 22, 2010 | Wednesday | 74 Comments

R., better known as RedHeadedGirl, is back with another wayback-when old-skool romance review, with plenty of layered WTFery to go around. Enjoy! You never forget your first.  You don’t forget your first kiss (Mike, and I had to guilt him into kissing me, because he was too much of wuss to try, and I was too much of a girly-wuss to kiss first), your first flower (Dave, whose great moments were always involving flowers but didn’t have a lot to back that up), your first Doctor (Oh, Nine.  Your time was too short.  But fantastic!).  This was my first romance. … read more »

Elise Logan Loves Fabio

May 06, 2010 | Thursday | 47 Comments

Elise Logan was kind enough to send me a snapshot collection of some of the finest covers among her library of old skool romance. Among the many, many amazing covers? Fabio. According to Elise, this is her secret shame. Well, it’s not so much a secret any more, since I’m telling The Whole Internet. Behold: the Fabster: Yeah, yeah, that’s not a big deal. Many people own this book. Heck, *I* own that book. But you know what they say about romance. And Fabio. It’s what’s inside that counts. read more »

Well, That’s a New One

April 27, 2010 | Tuesday | 17 Comments

OK, this is so cool, I had to share: Dorchester Publishing is thrilled to announce the signing of the Broadway musical option agreement for Leanna Renee Hieber’s The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker, a haunting tale of love and ghosts in Victorian England. Mt. Claire Entertainment bought the novel for its musical adaptation, and Hieber, who has innate talent for invoking the Victorian era in her writing, will pen the script. Composing music and lyrics are Kenny Seymour (Broadway credits include music direction for “Memphis” and arrangements for “The Wiz”) and Nicholas Roman Lewis (creative development for “The… read more »

Tango Mag: Why Romance Novels are Smarter Than You Think

February 02, 2010 | Tuesday | 19 Comments

TangoMag asked me to write about my definition of romance, so I drew on a whole lot of romance reading to write a short advisory article on how romance novels can help you keep the romance in your life: Why Romance Novels are Smarter Than You Think: Romance novels can teach you that romance itself is not merely a single gift or a gesture, and it sure isn’t just knockin’ boots. Romance doesn’t even guarantee a happy ending—anyone who has been through a bad breakup can tell you that, myself included. It’s not chocolate or hearts, diamonds or roses, yachts… read more »

Lauren Collins: An Interview

July 14, 2009 | Tuesday | 27 Comments

In the 22 June issue of the New Yorker, there’s a 10 page profile of Nora Roberts by New Yorker reporter Lauren Collins. I know many people haven’t had a chance to find it and don’t want to buy access. If you go to the you can subscribe in the upper-right corner to a “Digital Edition Free Preview” which includes archive access. From there, you can find the Nora Roberts profile by Lauren Collins. When I read the profile, and realized how much research she’d done into the backlist and history of Roberts’ work, I asked if she’d be willing… read more »

Friday Videos Inspire You. Badly.

March 20, 2009 | Friday | 61 Comments

Need inspiration this bizarre Friday? Want to craft the ultimate in hero? Let Fabio help. Is the wailing sax the auditory equivalent of the contemporary cover model with rippled abs and a complete inability to button his short? Cliched, tired, and not nearly as sexy as folks seem to think? [Thanks to Has for the link.] Now here’s a question: anyone have any good sites for shows that went off the air after a very few episodes? I remember seeing one episode of The American Embassy with Arija Bareikis, and of course it was cancelled the next day. So I… read more »

Links are Having a Party In my Pants

March 18, 2009 | Wednesday | 22 Comments

A few years ago, I knew a couple who were both in grad school and lived on Top Ramen and Rice-a-Roni. One Christmas, he saved up for months and gave her an Oxford English dictionary. It was so unexpected and so very much wanted that she cried for months whenever she talked about her gift. The Dictionary of American Regional English (DARE) might be a gift like that for me. I love, love, love regional dialects, from Pixburgese to the fine Jersey vernacular, and I love that the DARE explores all those quirky expressions you hear - or read -… read more »

What Would Emma Do by Eileen Cook

February 18, 2009 | Wednesday | 19 Comments

What Would Emma Do is a smart, unblinking mixture of “The Crucible” meets “Saved,” with one of the most memorable YA narrators I’ve met in awhile. However, it’s not a romance, so I’m not evaluating it as such. More on that in a moment. Emma is the only daughter of a single mom in a small Illinois Indiana* town named Wheaton, which is situated exactly in the middle of rural nowhere. Emma really, really hates living there. Her goal is a track scholarship to Northwestern, and she’s not secret about her goals, or her intense dislike of every aspect of… read more »

But Where is Fabio?

January 14, 2009 | Wednesday | 12 Comments

There is only one question I have regarding this wonderous product: WHERE is the Fabio version! What, you don’t want to nestle your mousing wrist betwixt the firm pectorals of The Fabster? Why on earth not?! [Thanks to Lisa Hendrix for the link.] read more »

The Look of Love

December 11, 2008 | Thursday | 56 Comments

In the bargain rack near you is a total complete treasure. There’s pulp novel covers, and there’s Fabio. There’s a visual history of the romance and pulp novel cover art, and there’s more man titty than you can shake a nipple at. MY copy, however, is better than anyone’s, because MY copy came from Eve Savage, who post-it-noted the very best pages with her own personal expressions of WTF? And since Jane also sent me one - what it is about people who see man titty and absurd cover art and immediately think of Smart Bitches? Because those people are… read more »

Half Time Penalties

November 21, 2008 | Friday | 16 Comments

I’m watching the Steeler game which, in the snow, looks like someone shook a snow globe and shoved a football game into it. While it’s half time, I thought I’d don my ever-so-no-flattering referee jersey and lay out a few penalties. Really, vertical stripes? With breasts? NOT a good fashion choice. But anyway. 15 yard penalty and a royal spanking to TMZ.com for the idea that Fabio is looking good for “the seven women and one man out there still buying romance novels.” Yeah. Seven million. And an additional roughing the kicker call against TMZ for being completely and obviously… read more »

Chag Sameach and Thank you

April 20, 2008 | Sunday | 15 Comments

Yesterday I went from wings and chiffon and a line for the breakfast buffet that was 1400 people long, to a dinner table for 1400 with matzo and wine and references to oppression and an obligation to recline and relax and celebrate. As I was sitting at the longest damn table I’ve ever seen, it occurred to me - seder is one hell of an effort for my inlaws, and that effort is one reason why I left RT early and rushed home to then travel upstate for Passover dinner. That effort, and my acknowledging that effort, is important, and… read more »
