I've received a few email requests for erotic content similar to 50 Shades of Grey [GR | A | BN | S | K | ARe] and a few bazillion Google searches for '50 shades synopsis' and '50 shades review' and, my personal favorite, '50 shades free download.' Heh. Good luck with that last one. This week at Kirkus I talked about the erotic romance that might appeal to those who enjoyed 50 Shades of Grey, from titles with BDSM to explicit sex (and strong heroines, hooray!) and shorter works of erotic fiction. People are still reading and finishing the book, and a few are…

I said out loud twice while reading this book, "This is the least erotic erotic romance. No one's having any sex." Hubby thought I was nuts, but while the story was friendly and sometimes very sweet, there was not much erotic content, in my opinion. If you're looking for explicitness, this is not the Canadian equivalent of small-town, large-family cowboy erotic romance (Lorelei James, for example). I liked this book, but I was expecting erotic romance, so I came away disappointed. For example: the cover and the description sent me a message that There Be Lots of Sex In This…

The media courage of 50 Shades continues, long and frequently enough that there are some themes emerging. One fantastic example: mommy porn. In two words, there are a lot of things wrong with Mommy Porn. Add to that "Mommy's naughty reader" and the rhetoric that women are ashamed of their erotic reading material and thus buy and read it digitally, as the Wall Street Journal suggested yesterday, means that the shame-wagging-finger gets bigger. I have a different finger to use in reply. It's the middle one. Romance has struggled with the pornography label for a long time. And I give…

I received a pitch for this book from the author, and was intrigued by the mix of elements she highlighted in her email: the multi-cultural characters, the use of European soccer clubs as a setting, and the interesting conflict with the heroine posing as the fiancée of her gay best friend while being attracted to his nemesis. I not only bought it but sent a message to Jane at DearAuthor, since she and I both enjoy sports-focused romances. Alas, this book is poorly edited, suffers from an outright fear of commas, is confused as to how the characters names are…

Get this - I’m part of Virgin Night tomorrow, 16 April, at the In the Flesh Erotic Reading Series. I will have to work extra hard to hide my stretch marks that reveal I am Most Definitely Not a Virgin. And keep the kids at home. That’s ok - more cupcakes for me! Just kidding - Virgin Night is for first-time authors/readers, and I’ll be appearing with Jenny Block, who will be reading from Open: Love, Sex, and Life in an Open Marriage, Kyria Abrahams, Emily Farris, Megan Hart, Gideon Levy, Sinclair Sexsmith, and Nicolette Dixon. DeeCee wrote and asked me to help her find a book, but in doing so made me ponder the presence of piercings in romance novels: I read an erotic book awhile back (1-3 years, I think) that featured a hero with a tongue piercing. I remember absolutely nothing about it, but that and that it was contemporary. On a side note, do you know of many romance books featuring tongue piercings? I can’t find many when I do an amazon or a google search. Aside from the erotica novel DeeCee is looking for, with the dude who has a tongue…

Crystal Jordan sent me a very interesting link - an interactive ad demonstrating how the Mini Cooper can whipslap winter, using a pleather-clad woman whipping, stroking, and otherwise dominating a very sport blue Mini.
So: those in the BDSM world - is her whipping technique at all accurate? Or is she faking it?

The votes are in, the clicks have been tallied, I’m forever grateful to the creators of our poll software who have saved me from a lot of pencil and paper tallying, and the results are unmistakably clear. Until votes from Michigan and Florida are included (just kidding!) the winner is: Entry #1: Taint Bottomwell! Because if ‘tain’t bottomwell, it taint awesome. The voting, as you’ll see below, was a veritable mudslide, sorry, landslide in favor of the “co-written masterpiece of buggery from Anna J. Evans and December Quinn.” If you are looking for some hot booty calls, perhaps these are…

Thanks to Bitchery reader KS Augustin for the following link, which was all over the new Urban Baby alternative, YouBeMom discussion boards this weekend: according to Scientific American, which is examining the intricacies of that heavenly moment, that little death, women are emotionless during orgasm. No, seriously. Beginning with a discussion of what women find arousing as compared to men, the article reveals research findings regarding what goes on in women’s brains during orgasm. We’ve talked about the language romance novels use to describe that Big O - and I’m still, for the record, not over the whole “burst like…
