Want some stuff to read? The internet is happy to oblige. First: Kobo has announced their Read On initiative, focusing on getting one trillion minutes read on Kobo devices and apps. From their site: Sign up, and tell us the school or community organization you would like to support. For every 10 million-minutes read on Kobo, we will make a contribution of eReading valued between $1,000 and $20,000 to a school or organization in your community. I think this is spiffy. And it makes me curious how many minutes I actually do read! Second: librarians at BEA discussed the impact…

Another small chapter in the Dorchester saga: New York Times bestselling Dorchester author Angie Fox has received her rights back to her book The Last of the Demon Slayers and has released it earlier than originally scheduled as a Kindle book. The book will also be available through print-on-demand for those who want a paper copy. Dorchester’s financial problems, according to Fox’s 6 November blog entry, had resulted in canceled orders, so she decided to get the rights back and release it herself as a self-published book. Fans had been asking for the next installment in her series - and…

Something is very rotten in the state of Dorchester. Both Jane Litte and I have been pretty frank about our hesitation to recommend or buy books from Dorchester since it is relatively well-known that some authors haven’t been paid royalties for years. I know Dorchester’s decision to go digital-first has meant some very tricky and pain in the ass changes for authors, particularly when they were anticipating and planning for a print release that was rescheduled at the last moment for a digital release sometime in the nebulous future. But I thought the Dorchester drama was, for the most part,…

From Michelle L. on Twitter this evening comes a link to horror author Brian Keene’s blog, where he alerts authors that both Leah Hultenschmidt and Don D’Auria have been laid off and that “the entire editorial department is now Chris Keeslar.” Obviously, at nearly 10pm EDT I’m not reaching anyone at Dorchester to confirm this but if true, well, if there’s a death pool in publishing Dorchester’s step closer to the final flush, if Keene’s entry is to be taken verbatim. Not only is Keene irate about the loss of D’Auria, but he has rather shocking tales to tell about…

Sitting on my countertop right now are a number of printed bound galleys for books coming out in November. Publishing as a rule works so far in advance, editors are now plotting out winter 2011, or even spring 2012, and thinking little about what’s going on in a month or two. That’s marketing and publicity’s department. And, of course, the author’s concern as well. But if you’re a Dorchester author with a mass market release scheduled for this fall, you are thinking a lot about right now - and from my understanding, thinking you are totally lost, up a creek,…

OK, this is so cool, I had to share: Dorchester Publishing is thrilled to announce the signing of the Broadway musical option agreement for Leanna Renee Hieber’s The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker, a haunting tale of love and ghosts in Victorian England. Mt. Claire Entertainment bought the novel for its musical adaptation, and Hieber, who has innate talent for invoking the Victorian era in her writing, will pen the script. Composing music and lyrics are Kenny Seymour (Broadway credits include music direction for “Memphis” and arrangements for “The Wiz”) and Nicholas Roman Lewis (creative development for “The…

Every now and again, readers will interact with authors online and kerfuffles ensue. I know, it’s so rare, but it happens. No, really. And sometimes in the course of these festive occasions, you’ll see commentary from a reader who is so incensed, so horrified by what an author has written that there is Epic Flounce and a vow to never read or buy that author’s books again! (Pretend there was a really impressive echo feature on that last sentence, kthx.) I usually blink at these flounces because it takes a LOT for me to reach a point where I am…
