Bitchin' Blog Posts : Dearauthor

Links, and some WTFery

May 16, 2012 | Wednesday | 24 Comments

As the Washington Post reported, romance author Adele Dubois received a "notice of copyright infringement" from Google, which then removed a post from the Romance Books R Us blog based on the entry "ADELE + EXITOS." The e-mail from Google stated, “Blogger has been notified, according to the terms of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), that certain content in your blog is alleged to infringe upon the copyrights of others.” The e-mail lists the copyright owner as Sony, the copyright work description as “Adele + Exitos” and the “location of the infringing material” as the post by Dubois, which… read more »

19. Buying, Reading and Reviewing

January 23, 2012 | Monday | 9 Comments

This was recorded when I was coming down with the flu and pneumonia, and I'm slightly out of breath - and coughing. I edited out most of the coughing but if I missed one, I apologize. This episode includes Sarah's nefarious plans for Romantic Times in 2012 in Chicago, reader mail from Sarah's inbox about buying books, picking self published books for review and how we do it, pitching books for review and how not to do it, and reacting and responding to reviews. Jane also tries to recommend books to Sarah. Here are the books we discuss in this… read more »

17. Ridiculousness Threshold: 29 December 2011

December 29, 2011 | Thursday | 16 Comments

We're back for one last podcast in 2011, and we're talking about the ridiculousness threshold, why hyperbole is so common in some books, and why that threshold varies for different readers depending on genre. We also talk about the point at which we can no longer accept character or plot insanity and just can't enjoy the book anymore. We also talk a bit about books that we love and at the time of recording were reading. So it's a bit in the past but hey, good book recs never go stale. read more »

Podcast Recommendations, Please

November 26, 2011 | Saturday | 43 Comments

Since Jane and I began working on the Dear Bitches Smart Authors Podcast (new episode coming this week, I promise!) I've started subscribing to a few podcasts, but I want to expand my subscription list. So I figured I'd ask you, since our tastes align in a few key areas.  So far, I subscribe to the "Stuff You Should Know" podcast, and the "Notes in Spanish" podcast - which gives me some hope that I haven't entirely lost my ability to understand Spanish (though my ability to understand the accent from Spain is much greater than my ability to understand… read more »

June 13, 2011 | Monday | 0 Comments

You tweeted, you emailed, you tweeted some more, and some of you won copies of the book - and you helped us spread the word. Really, that’s what this campaign is about: helping us promote a contemporary romance we thought was truly, truly awesome. Thank you for helping us out with that goal. And now, we have a winner! One person who tweeted, emailed, or helped us promote the Save the Contemporary webpage will win her choice of a nook Touch, a Kobo Touch, or a Kindle with Special Offers (I call it the “Friends with benefits Kindle”) - and… read more »

SBTB and DA Bestsellers: 31 May - 7 June 2011

June 12, 2011 | Sunday | 13 Comments

Jane and I are back again with our tabulation of this past week’s bestsellers, calculated using the order reports from our affiliate programs. Jane’s commentary: “I think the $.99 price of Courtney Milan’s book is what giving the story staying power on the list.  Grace Burrowes and Susanna Kearsley’s stories are part of Amazon’s Sunshine deals.” What are you trying to say, there, J? We like bargains and sales? Heh. I should say we do. Books that are avidly recommended all over the place, too, I think. Bestsellers from SBTB and DA: 10 April - 10 May 2011

May 15, 2011 | Sunday | 13 Comments

Time again for the best sellers list from Dear Author and Smart Bitches for 10 April - 10 May 2011. As with last week’s list, we used our affiliate links, which reward the blog owner with 6-8% of the sale price for each item sold, to compile the list.  I use affiliate links for both All Romance eBooks and Amazon, and Harlequin when reviewing a Harlequin novel.  DearAuthor uses affiliate links for Amazon alone. So here is this week’s list. It doesn’t capture every sale out there or every sale that we might inspire, but it is a data point… read more »

Bestsellers from SBTB and DA

May 09, 2011 | Monday | 24 Comments

Behold, I quote Jane: “One thing that readers have in common is our neverending search for new books.  Sarah Wendell of Smart Bitches and we at DearAuthor use affiliate links to help fund our sites.  These affiliate links reward the blog owner with 6-8% of the sale price for each item sold using an affiliate link.  Sarah uses affiliate links for both All Romance eBooks and Amazon, and Harlequin when reviewing a Harlequin novel.  DearAuthor uses affiliate links for Amazon alone.” Jane thought that it might be fun to create a “bestseller” list out of the affiliate links.  Jane, apparently,… read more »

Women like Romance - And We Like Football, Too

February 06, 2011 | Sunday | 71 Comments

Only recently has the NFL and all surrounding merchandise caught on that women like football, and not just for the commercials or the recipes. There are actual football-fluent women out there. I know many of them. We’re kinda awesome. Personally, I am bound by the Law of Geography as a Steeler fan - I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. For gosh sake’s, we have our own team polka (We’re from the town with the Great Football Team—we cheer them Pittsburgh Steelers!) Ask to hear my Pixburg accent. It’s glorious. Jane from DearAuthor is bound by that same law… read more »
