Awesomesauce: Zoe Archer’s series bundled for $9.99

November 18, 2010 | Thursday | 51 Comments

If you’re a Kindle customer, you can get Zoe Archer’s entire Blades of the Rose series in one ebook bundle for $9.99. It’s also available at BN.com for the nook. Is it too much to suppose that there’s some folks at Kensington dancing around singing “Doncha wish your girlfriend was hot like me?” to the Agency publishers? I bet there’s dance footage. I bet Zoe can get it, too. I don’t know if I can say how much that gives me giddy pants. So smart! (This also reminds me to go read Stranger, which is Catallus Graves’ story). read more »

A Kiss to Build a Dream On

June 24, 2010 | Thursday | 22 Comments

Yesterday, Edith Shain, the nurse from the VJ-Day picture of The Best Kiss ever, died at age 91. According to the news article, she never really knew who it was that kissed her in Times Square, even though that’s one of the most iconic images ever. Marguerite Butler said she was going to smooch her husband in honor of Ms. Shain - an idea I totally support! Smooch your partner then do it again. Kissing is often a short scene in romances, especially erotically charged scenes that move on to kisses in “Other Locations.” But good kisses in romance are… read more »

Friday Videos Say Yo Backwards

December 11, 2009 | Friday | 10 Comments

This is one of my favorite Hanukkah songs and I have NO idea why it doesn’t get more attention. Happy Hanukkah to you, and try not to dance too hard at your desk to this song.   read more »

Friday Videos Love the Hoff

October 02, 2009 | Friday | 12 Comments

To Luisa go all the thanks for all the Hoff. Behold, the literal video for “Hooked on a Feeling” originally recorded by Blue Suede, then covered (badly) by The Hoffster. True story: when Hubby and I got married, this was our “first dance” song - the real one, not the Hoff one - and then our “last dance” was our wedding song, also not by the Hoff. So I freaking love this song, even if it’s Hoff flying over a weird guy with a cube. read more »

Social Networking: On Stage

September 26, 2009 | Saturday | 3 Comments

You never know where the hot topic of social networking will turn up. If it’s not a discussion on Twitter that’s posted to Facebook about either or both (mmmmm, meta) it’s contemporary dance. What now? From the OMGSOCOOL Department: part of the 2009-2010 season at Peak Performances at Montclair State University in New Jersey, Lula Washington Dance Theatre is premiering a new piece called www.connections.2010, which is dance about social networking: Washington’s newest work was inspired by the ever-challenging way people use socially networking the 21st century: Twitter, YouTube and Facebook to be sure! With Washington as its artistic voice,… read more »

Patrick Swayze, Dirty Dancing, and Romance

September 15, 2009 | Tuesday | 61 Comments

Last night when I heard that Patrick Swayze died of cancer at 57, a link went around Twitter from New York reporter Mandy Stadtmillerto the YouTube footage of the final dance scene from Dirty Dancing. I freely admit: I cried while watching it. I know a lot of people looked at the death of Michael Jackson as a loss from their childhood, of a person who was responsible for the soundtrack of their youth. For me, it wasn’t Jackson - it was Swayze, particularly Dirty Dancing. I was 12 when the movie came out, and I wasn’t, if I recall… read more »

Get Your Big Bag of Harlequin Swag!

June 02, 2009 | Tuesday | 1 Comments

After a weekend of commenting fun, it’s time to pick two winners of the Big Bag of Harlequin Swag. And yes, I totally stand corrected, that the gentleman in the red serge is NOT a mountie. My bad. I don’t know how the giant furry hat didn’t tip me off. I was distracted by the twinkling orbs of gas mask man, I suppose! So here are the random integers: Which means the winners are Christine McKay and Lil’ Deviant!! .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) with your mailing info, and I and the Post Office shall do the dance as old as time… read more »

Maverick by Lora Leigh

June 01, 2009 | Monday | 71 Comments

Every night before bed this week I’ve read a few pages of Lora Leigh’s Maverick. I picked it up partly because I know for many readers, her books are Teh Cracke, and because she’s a huge seller in contemporary erotic romance. Plus there’s SEALs and muscular badasses with semi-automatic weaponry in their trousers, plus an actual firearm if they’re carrying, and I’m a total fangirl of law enforcement characters of both genders. The problem with Maverick is that I read a few pages and bust out laughing - not “Ha ha! That was hilarious dialogue!” laughter but “Wait, are you… read more »

Fun with Book Covers

February 22, 2009 | Sunday | 12 Comments

If you look glance quickly at each of the book covers, it looks like the couple is line dancing. Whee! Dance couple, dance! One question: I well understand the shortage of good photography, but wouldn’t it make sense to spread out the release dates so the bookstore folks don’t go, “Huh, didn’t I just see this cover?!” Thanks to B. for the heads up. read more »

Tools of Change: A Recap with Interpretive Dance

February 11, 2009 | Wednesday | 5 Comments

There are no tools here. Just about everyone is curious and interesting, and everyone does a little something different. But if I were going to make one recommendation, it would be this: there need to be more sessions about readers. As in, the actual humans who READ the ebooks. Debates about DRM and format, open source and the logistics of creating an ebook are important. Displaying the new devices - way important. But discussing ANY of that without also examining the readers who are BUYING the ebooks means that the true solution to any of the questions cannot be reached.… read more »
