January 01, 2012 | Sunday | 30 Comments

Happy New Year! I hope those of you with the extra day off tomorrow have lots and lots of time to read. That's my plan. One of my New Year's resolutions is to schedule DEAR time for myself on days when I know I am going to be busy. For some reason, this past December was chock-full of crazybusytime, and judging from your tweets, FB and email it was probably true for you, too.  So let's read more, shall we? MORE ROMANCE FOR ALL. Heh.  Here's this week's Top 10 List, culled from our finest meats, cheeses, and affiliate codes! Devil's… read more »

Device in your Hand

February 17, 2011 | Thursday | 105 Comments

If you are left handed, and you use a digital reader, in which hand do you hold the device? Conversely, if you are right handed, and you use a digital reader, in which hand do you hold your device? This was something Jane Litte and I were talking about yesterday as we were getting ready for our session, eReading from the eReader’s Perspective. (Full conference update coming soon.) Our presentation covered the differing hardware, software, and customer support of the different readers, and what a curious device buyer needs to consider when shopping for a device. The device Jane was… read more »

Links!

February 15, 2011 | Tuesday | 5 Comments

A few links of info while I’m at Tools of Change. First: Macmillan has launched a new community for romance readers at Heroes & Heartbreakers. There’s a lot of familiar names among the writers, which is awesome. Good luck, y’all! Second: Thanks to Caridad Ferrer for the heads up about this article, which made me most happy. Advertising Age takes a look at romance as a genre, and its continued success in Romance Novels Still Get Love Thanks to Cheap Prices, Loyalty. Romance isn’t just “recession proof” as so many articles have said - it’s forward thinking and the connection… read more »

The FTC Guidelines, Whining, and Bad Bargains

October 14, 2009 | Wednesday | 46 Comments

Since the FTC released it’s guidelines for blog reviewers, I’ve been trying to coalesce my reaction and explain why I’m so irritated. The reaction to this post will likely be that I’m arguing against transparency. I’m not. I’m quite in favor of it. What I am against is whining. Since the FTC guidelines were released, I’ve heard and read several versions of the following statement on many, many sites and from many people: “I think this is a great idea. I can’t understand why you’re disinclined towards transparency. Shame shame! I myself have been burned by bloggers not disclosing the… read more »

Accidental Cinderella by Nancy Robards Thompson

October 06, 2009 | Tuesday | 22 Comments

Lindsay Bingham is a small town girl who finds herself in St. Michel, a small European country similar to Monaco, as a bridesmaid to her friend Sophie, who is marring the crown prince of said country. At the wedding, she meets the gaze of one hot celebrity chef, Carlos Montigo, and the attraction is immediate. As Carlos goes off to fetch champagne for them both after a short but charged conversation on the balcony, another man, a television producer, asks her to dance and drops an amazing opportunity in her lap: television show hostess for his newly-purchased cooking network. Sophie,… read more »

Can’t Stand the Heat by Louisa Edwards

September 26, 2009 | Saturday | 27 Comments

If this book were portioned out and divided into thirds, two of the thirds would be so outstanding, so fun and awesome and interesting and innovative that I could go on for awhile on the things I enjoyed about them. The remaining portion dulls the sparkle and joy of those other two, because the flaws are contained in a character and in the structure of the tension. Let’s start with the good parts: Edwards has created an absolutely fun new hero: the happy alpha. Adam Temple is the chef at the helm of a new restaurant, Market, specializing in locally… read more »

Win + Win = Sarah Passes Out

February 16, 2009 | Monday | 15 Comments

Here at the NJ outpost of Smart Bitch HQ, we are big fans of America’s Test Kitchen. Though there are times when Christopher Kimball is a sanctimonious snotbag, and we wish his harem of excellent chefs would smack the smirk off his mug with a cast iron skillet, there is no denying that the recipes are so great, they bring new meaning to the words “never fail.” From the Best Recipe cookbooks to the America’s Test Kitchen show on public television—and the enormous and wonderful Cook’s Country magazine, we are acolytes at the altar of Cook’s Illustrated. So imagine my… read more »
