This is another I Read This To Push It On The Unsuspecting Bitchery. It’s older, and not totally a romance, but it is a favorite of mine. It takes place in Feudal Japan, and is a version of the story of the 47 Samurai. I remember someone in the comments of… something… asking if both characters in Impulsive were Asian, and that’s it’s rare to get both main characters to be a minority. So here we are (although I planned to do this one long before that conversation even happened). Cat is the daughter of a daimyo and…

If actual physical gifts are not your cup of tea this year, you always have the option of charitable donations in honor of someone, anyone, or everyone. Charities are feeling the pinch as much as anyone in a tight economy, so every tiny bit helps. So while I’ve been doing goofy, silly, and ridiculously bizarre gift ideas, I also wanted to feature a few charitable organizations that I like, and ask which ones you direct donations toward. As Newark Mayor Cory Booker said on the Rachel Maddow show last April, too often we allow our inability to do everything undermine…

Want to grin? Have some happy, thoughtful links. An Ode to Emilie Loring, romance author. Thanks to Holly G. for that link. Q: Which romance authors (you can only name one) remain enduring favorites through every single book they wrote? New or older authors, doesn’t matter. (I predict the top three favorites from the comments will be Heyer, Roberts, and McMaster-Bujold. My choice is Julia Spencer-Fleming, mostly because I’m going through a palate-cleanse of mystery reading and I can’t stop turning back to her books to enjoy and savor her character building and small-world-building skills. Mills & Boon has a…

According to the Dyer Disaster website they are “a volunteer group which provides Recovery Services in the event of a disaster affecting the residents of Dyer County, Tennessee. Despite my best efforts, we were not permitted to sign Beyond Heaving Bosoms at the Literacy Signing on Wednesday Night at RWA national in DC. I am so incredibly bummed about that decision, not only because it would have been one of the few events that we would both attend but because we know there are a ton of DC Bitches readers who would have come out and thereby raised a pretty good amount of money for literacy. So, we’ll do it anyway. The Smart Bitches Bootleg Booksigning - with Beer - will be at 3:00 pm on Thursday 16…

In memory of Edith Layton, Jane and I are hosting a fundraiser/auction/giveaway to benefit the North Shore Animal League. Layton’s daughter Susie Felber told me that while her mother was very quiet about her battle with ovarian cancer, she was not at all shy about “her insane love of animals,” and so the family decided any memorial contributions should be directed to the NSAL. With some help from friends and authors, we’re putting together a three part effort. First: if you’d like to make a contribution in memory of Edith Layton, you can do so online , or to any…

From Brenda Novak’s assistant comes word that the 2009 Diabetes Auction raised $270,611: “That’s more than last year and it puts us on track to break the 1 million mark in 2010.” According to Novak’s auction page on her website, in five years the auction has raised $770,611 for diabetes research. Way to go! I am such a big fan of Novak’s auction, and the time and effort that must go into the event is extraordinary. Kudos to Brenda and her assistant Anna, and to everyone who donated. This year, Smart Bitches donated an adspace and an interview, both of…

The last days of the biggest charity auction in romance land are here - and there’s still some fantastic items up for bid. From an adspace over at Dear Author which is, as of this writing, going for over $400.00, to a proposal critique from Angie James currently priced at over $300.00, there’s opportunities out the yin-yang. I love the Web services donations and the Once in a Lifetime page is drool-worthy: sailing? Three nights on a beachfront in Mexico? An African safari? Dude. Wow. There are also two Smart Bitch items up for auction: our Prize adspace, which is…

When I redid the re-captioning of Wayne Jordan’s book from the Uncyclopedia definition of romance, the book itself caught my eye. The synopsis sounded very interesting, so I ordered it. Mason Sinclair is recovering from a terrible injury sustained in the line of duty when his mother tells him that the man the thought was his father was not, and that he has three brothers he never knew about. Lianne Thomas is undercover protecting a little boy and his mother. They’re both in Barbados. Could this potentially rock? It seemed to me that yes, oh yes, it could. Caribbean setting?…

Every now and again we discuss women’s shelters, Goodwill, libraries and other places that eagerly accept your used and gently worn romance novels. I’m always on the lookout for places to send my never ending pile of romances, so I was thankful to Moreena, who wrote me with a great location that might need some romances in stock: I know occasionally you all are looking to pass on books, and I’m thinking that maybe some of your readers are, too. I usually give mine to the library for book sales or to Goodwill, but I was recently in the hospital…
