Rocky Mountain Desire by Vivian Arend

April 10, 2012 | Tuesday | 22 Comments

I said out loud twice while reading this book, "This is the least erotic erotic romance. No one's having any sex." Hubby thought I was nuts, but while the story was friendly and sometimes very sweet, there was not much erotic content, in my opinion. If you're looking for explicitness, this is not the Canadian equivalent of small-town, large-family cowboy erotic romance (Lorelei James, for example). I liked this book, but I was expecting erotic romance, so I came away disappointed. For example: the cover and the description sent me a message that There Be Lots of Sex In This… read more »

Friday Videos Fan Themselves

January 20, 2012 | Friday | 42 Comments

Lynz sent me this link, and said, "I was channel-surfing the other day and paused when I saw a shot of an attractive man taking his shirt off - wow, that's a really awkward first sentence, I should start thinking more before I write. Anyway, my attention was thoroughly caught and I stopped to watch the video. Seconds later, what did I see but a Harlequin Suspense being used as a fan? I was thinking the video was really cute, until I hit the 2:20 mark, at which point I realized that it was the Best. Music video. Ever. Once I… read more »

Sizzling Book Club Pick: The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley

April 04, 2011 | Monday | 121 Comments

It’s not so much sizzling in northern coastal Scotland in the winter, but this book is amazing for it’s warmth, the strength of the writing, and the story-within-a-story. As I announced in the Book Club Chat last week, our April Book Club pick is Susanna Kearsley’s The Winter Sea. Previously published in Canada as ‘Sophia’s Secret,’ and a nominee for both a RITA and a RNA award, this book is emotional, historically fascinating, rich and worth savoring. Here’s the description: In the spring of 1708, an invading Jacobite fleet of French and Scottish soldiers nearly succeeded in landing the exiled… read more »

Romance in the News

February 11, 2011 | Friday | 23 Comments

Tis the season - it’s Valentine’s day, when media’s attention turns to romance authors for the scoop on all things Valentiney (or just tiny). Romance authors and the day of chocolate, flowers, and romance (and more chocolate) seem to go hand in hand this time of year. So here’s a brief round up of the good and the WTF. From the WTF: Oh, Canada. The CBC rounds up the most ‘romantic’ cities in the Great White North by analyzing which cities buy more romance novels, sex and relationship books - and CD’s by Michael Buble - on Amazon.ca. The winner?… read more »

Angela James on The Marilyn Denis Show

January 20, 2011 | Thursday | 14 Comments

Carina Press executive editor Angela James was on The Marilyn Denis Show this morning, which is a live national broadcast in Canada. Live. Also, national. And LIVE TELEVISION. Wowser! I was trying to watch the live feed but couldn’t get it to work. But no worries: the clip of Angie’s appearance is up on the Marilyn.ca website already! Angie’s segment was all about digital reading devices, and how women romance readers are a driving force in the development of the digital reading market. She demonstrated the different devices, gave a brief overview of the differences between the Kindle, the Sony… read more »

Karina, who lives in New Zealand, will actually be in Canada, so she’s going to join us at 11pm EST, because it’ll be 8pm for her, and not, like, sometime in February (honestly, thinking about the International Date Line and what time it is in New Zealand makes me have to take a deep brain breath). The Reader’s Place in Publishing

July 02, 2010 | Friday | 40 Comments

Next week I have a TON of travel coming up. First, I’ll be at RomCon in Denver, CO, and if you’re going to be there, I hope you’ll introduce yourself to me. I’m the one with glasses. And I’m usually pretty loud. Then, immediately afterward, I’m going to be in Vancouver, BC, Canada, at Simon Fraser University’s Summer Publishing Workshops giving a keynote address and leading a one-day seminar on Romance Novels. The keynote is focused on “The Reader’s Place in the Publishing Process,” and I’ve got an hour. Think I can squeeze it all in?!  (PUN TOTALLY INTENDED.) I… read more »

Ripple Iron on the Stations

June 01, 2010 | Tuesday | 165 Comments

I had an email over the weekend from Helen, who is a little frustrated at the removal of Australian terms from romance novels set in Australia: I have a topic to suggest. International heroes, or, false advertising: why are you labeling him Australian, giving him an American name and calling him a rancher? American cultural imperialism! It drives me crazy. Corrugated iron roofing is called ‘ripple iron’, properties or stations get called ‘ranches’... and dear God almighty, a Sheriff? I hope he’s flown in from the USA cos I’ve never met one in Australia. Why do editors assume that Aussie… read more »

Harper’s Bride by Alexis Harrington

May 11, 2010 | Tuesday | 24 Comments

I bought this book after reading an article in RT’s May issue about what some romance authors from back in the day are doing now. Their profile of one author, Alexis Harrington (whose name was vaguely familiar to me), mentioned that she’d recently published her backlist on Smashwords and Amazon Kindle. Clickity, click, I had a sample, and then a few clicks later I had to buy the whole book. Harper’s Bride is a quiet, thoughtful romance. It’s a historical, so it takes place in the past, but something about the style, the way it was written and the language… read more »

Links: Women, Superpowers and Alexis Harrington

May 05, 2010 | Wednesday | 8 Comments

Gosh you’d think the internet was really for p0rn or pictures of cats, but really, it’s all about WOMEN. Heh. And not in the porny sense, either. From an article from Bob d’Awessome, women not only rule mobile social networking, but we rule social media, too. This doesn’t surprise me now that I’ve thought about it. I barely have time to return phone calls and have long conversations but I text all day with friends all over the country about new babies, Tylenol recalls (yes, my children’s pain relief options are now down to bourbon and schnapps), and whatever else… read more »
