Seeing Yourself and Seeing Perfection: Changing Standards of Beauty in Romance

January 03, 2011 | Monday | 135 Comments

While I was gazing at my own navel the other day (and the stretch marks along side of it) I started thinking about where my own standard of beauty originated, and how the romances I read may have influenced my concept of the female ideal. What, you don’t think about that while getting dressed? OK, it was more along the lines of, “My chest wouldn’t fit in a single one of those bodices without ripping,” but that spun out into standards and ideals. I think there’s good and bad parts to the female standard in romance novels. Among the good… read more »

What Not to Write: Snack Food Edition

October 25, 2010 | Monday | 62 Comments

Oh, it’s a beautiful thing when food imagery is used in sex scenes. It’s all 9 1/2 Weeks spliced together with Iron Chef - wouldn’t that be the very best in a sensual interlude? Unless we’re talking snack foods, as Kathleen discovered: Thank you for pointing out the Books on the Knob website. I have had a lot of fun downloading the free ebooks. One of these was The Bite Before Christmas by Heidi Betts. In the story “All I Vant For Christmas”, I read something that belongs in the “The What Not to Write” category. Sex linked with food… read more »

Monday Linkage

March 15, 2010 | Monday | 8 Comments

First: so many people forwarded me the link to today’s XKCD, I can’t possibly thank them all, but they are ALL awesome. Porn for Women - and make sure you hold your mouse over the comic, too. Extra more win that way. If you want more laughter, here’s a link courtesy of Gail Dayton, who was pretty sure we’d written about were-duck-erotica before. Oh, yes, we did. it was a sad chapter in our history, when we were temporarily absorbed into the Dear Author Media Network. But we had nothing to do with the creation of this book, Duck Fart,… read more »

HaBO: Pert Breasts or Toupee Tape?

February 11, 2010 | Thursday | 36 Comments

From Mara, a wardrobe malfunction about to happen: I’d like to appeal to the collective knowledge of the Bitchery. I’m looking for a book (a Harlequin, I believe) that I read in the mid-to-late 90’s or early 00’s. It was about a pair of twins (identical, of course) separated in toddlerhood by divorcing parents. The story follows the twin who ended up with Mom, who later remarried, I think she grows up in Florida? In the States for certain. She is a model whose career is destroyed when she is in a car accident and has to relearn how to… read more »

Caption That Cover: Devon Edition

October 09, 2009 | Friday | 115 Comments

Have a look at this new Ellora’s Cave cover. Is there a woman coming out of his arse? Does he have bigger breasts than I do? And why is his head so small? Is it inversely proportionate to the size of his more different other head? It’s time for caption that cover! Give your best caption, re-title, or commentary, and the best one gets a $10 gift certificate to the bookstore of your choosing. You’ve got 48 hours. Feel free to comment on which ones you think are best, even if you don’t leave your own. Get ready, get set,… read more »

The Playboy Sheikh’s Virgin Stable Girl by Sharon Kendrick

September 10, 2009 | Thursday | 139 Comments

I read this book because not one but two different people emailed me and said, to wit, “OMG you have to read this it is HILARIOUS. Like Pregnesia Hilarious.” One reader said, “I just had to draw your attention to a stunning read. It’s so bad, it transcends the line between bad and good and becomes rather excellent…. I can highly recommend Kendrick’s latest. Honestly, she’s usually one of the authors that I like - I kind of enjoy the hyper-realism of her stories, and I know what I’m getting. But, for me, this tipped over from presents into parody.… read more »

Friday Videos Say WTF Some More

May 08, 2009 | Friday | 42 Comments

Thanks to Juli, we have this NSFW eye candy mixing, as she puts it, “mullet, bare (female) breasts, bare (male) breasts, an underwater sprite who kills people, and a distinct “Lucius Malfoy” vibe.” How do you resist that? Dmitry Hvorostovsky is a Russian baritone, and Juli found this via the OperaChic blog. Somewhere, an art department employee at a publishing house is looking at this video, and feeling the fiery zing of excitement at the idea of four million cover art ideas in one convenient music video. read more »

The Courtier’s Secret by Donna Russo Morin

March 04, 2009 | Wednesday | 18 Comments

My understanding of historical fiction is that the audience of readers expects just about every morsel, aside from the fictional existence of the protagonists, to be verifiable or at least highly researched and therefore likely fact. Donna Russo Morin’s book is nothing if not indefatigably researched. Readers experience the entirety of Kind Louis XIV’s court, from the tightly intricate manners and expectations of deportment, which ranged from who had a chair with arms and who could sit in the presence of whom, to the behavior of the courtiers, which, if you’re at all sensitive- Well, let me start there: if… read more »

Half Time Penalties

November 21, 2008 | Friday | 16 Comments

I’m watching the Steeler game which, in the snow, looks like someone shook a snow globe and shoved a football game into it. While it’s half time, I thought I’d don my ever-so-no-flattering referee jersey and lay out a few penalties. Really, vertical stripes? With breasts? NOT a good fashion choice. But anyway. 15 yard penalty and a royal spanking to TMZ.com for the idea that Fabio is looking good for “the seven women and one man out there still buying romance novels.” Yeah. Seven million. And an additional roughing the kicker call against TMZ for being completely and obviously… read more »

Go Topless

August 23, 2008 | Saturday | 62 Comments

Got plans today? Kathryn gave me a heads up (or something) that today is Go Topless’s protest day around the US, where women will gather without shirts to protest the ridiculous standards which make it socially acceptable for men to go topless, but not women. The New York City gathering place is the Merchant’s Gate of Central Park, aka the Columbus Circle entrance across from the Time Warner center. Other cities hosting topless rallies include Bloomington, Chicago, Miami and Omaha. The Denver rally will be on the 26th to coincide with the start of the DNC (Welcome to Denver! Here… read more »
