At RWA, I have a lot of silly conversations in the bar. What follows is the result of one of those silly bar conversations. It’s been awhile since we’ve done a Photoshop contest, but IT IS TIME. First, some backstory: Both of the RITA® Reader Challenge reviews for Lauren Willig’s Mischief of the Mistletoe referenced that the hero, one Turnip Fitzhugh, didn’t get a sex scene! Emily wrote, “I love Willig’s light-hearted style. That being said her books work better for me when they are darker. Missing is the steamy sex from the first three Pink books. She writes loves…

Some of you were so dry and witty in your replies I thought you were telling the truth. “A little known British idiom” indeed. Who knew flaunting cacti could inspire such creativity? The honorable mentions go to: Tina C. for ““Flaunting Cactus” is a little-used British expression, much like “preening peacock”, that is used when someone is a prick and is not just proud of it, he puts his prickishness on display whenever possible. HAIKU! Deadline Hell rocks the haiku with Flaunting Cactus is an inwardly chafing form of the prickly pair. Sorcha Mowbray: “A flaunting cactus is a reference…

Teri S. sent me the following book cover, saying that it HAD to be an excellent book, what with the cover and the title. Now, I think that’s hilarious. Almost as hilarious as the couple embracing in the avocado field, which, according to the person who was looking for that book, features the tagline, “The avocado farm was going well, but who could have predicted Jane’s brain aneurysm?....” Wow. From One More Chance among the avocodos to A Flaunting Cactus, old-old-skool Harlequin titles are as much fun as the newer-old-skool titles they’ve recently stopped using. (NB: I was reading a…

On Twitter I recently asked the following question: “If you could buy digital books in a physical bookstore, would you shop there?” I asked because I saw a eReads article about digital book kiosks in physical bookstores, an idea I would LOVE to see. I’ve been thinking a great deal lately about how I shop for books, what I look for when I go buy a book, and I realized, I seek a specific title when I go make a purchase. I haven’t browsed a romance section in a bookstore in a very, very long time. Yet I have a…

This will be fun! Behold the entries in this weekend’s LOLibrarian contest, submitted by readers, librarians, and all those capable of Photoshop shenanigans. Voting will be conducted for the next 24 hours or so, and the winner receives a $25 gift card to the bookstore of his or her choosing. And librarians, as usual, get mad props and high fives and the people’s ovation and fame forever.
Hey! Here’s an idea! Let’s have the NFL players and the librarians trade salaries for awhile? Heh.

Day one of the Digital Book World conference was a mix of panels that were so great with the amazing awesome brilliance of the panelists the top of my head nearly blew off, and panels that were so infuriating the top of my head nearly blew off. Let’s start with the CEO panel, since that was in the morning. Brian Napack, President of Macmillan, Jane Friedman, CEO of Open Road Integrated Media, David Steinberger, CEO of Perseus, and Michael Hyatt, CEO of Thomas Nelson, were joined by David Nussbam, CEO of F+W Media, to talk around and about digital book…

The crochet bedspread had a leopard print pattern. And it didn’t even smell like Axe in here. More like…Drakkar Noir. “It musta taken your grandmother forever to make that bedspread.” Tony closed the door. “Nah. I did it. I used finger weight yarn, merino/silk blend,…

It’s not summer, so I’ll get a new icon for the bookclub, but it’s still Sizzling, so it’s time for the next pick in the Smart Bitches Sizzling Book Club for October! You ready? I tweeted about it over the summer while I read it, painstakingly typing in each line that rocked me, and there were a LOT of them. Prepare yourself for good writing, really really GOOD writing, mayhem, diabolical plots and Romancing-the-Stone-esque adventure: the October book is Scoundrel by Zoe Archer. The description: The Blades of the Rose are sworn to protect the sources of magic in the…

Happy endings are much better if you don’t run into a tree. Take my word on this. Heather, however, wants to revisit the book wherein she learned this wisdom: There was a bookstore that had 5 WALLS of romance novels - used - for very cheap. anyway. I read this one that wasn’t better than any of the others for any reason, but was the only one that stayed in my memory for some reason. So I keep doing multiple google searches on the contents, to no avail. SO .. maybe you can help me. I will type up my…

Maggie needs your help. I need to un-learn about the following plotline: This is a tad embarrassing. I just posted in reply to RedHeadedGirl’s review of the first romance she ever read and joked that I wanted her to do a review of the first romance I ever read. I gave some details figuring “how hard could this be to find?” But when I started googling the facts I remembered, it turns out it is REALLY hard to find this old book. Now, I can’t stop thinking about it and want help! So, HaBO please!!!!!! This would have been early…
