Snooki Snex: the Winner!

January 11, 2011 | Tuesday | 11 Comments

It was a landslide voting victory for the Snooki Snex Scene winner! The winner, with over 200 votes: Crochet Leopard Print! Entry #1: Crochet Leopard Print “This is my room, baby,” Tony said proudly as he held the door for her. He was super classy. “Like it?” Wow. Gia would shit herself. Animal print everywhere. The crochet bedspread had a leopard print pattern. And it didn’t even smell like Axe in here. More like…Drakkar Noir. “It musta taken your grandmother forever to make that bedspread.” Tony closed the door. “Nah. I did it. I used finger weight yarn, merino/silk blend,… read more »

HaBO: Hold Me Closer, First Mate Dancer

January 09, 2011 | Sunday | 38 Comments

Ali writes in with a romance she’s lost and hopes to find again: I have had a book in my possession that has moved with me several times, and been there for me in my darkest moments. Now, said book is nowhere to be found. For the love of Merlin’s beard, I can’t find it, I can’t remember the title or author, and the names of the heroine/hero escape me. You may be asking yourself, “How in the holy hell can I help this bitch out?”. Well, I’ll give you as much as I can about this book, and hope… read more »

Over at Kirkus: Must-Reads in Romance

December 22, 2010 | Wednesday | 77 Comments

Which books do you adore, recommend, and try to entice people to read romance? Which books have made someone reconsider their opinion of the genre, or created a new romance fan who book shops with you? Which books Hold The Power of Awesome? That’s my topic at Kirkus today: Romance Must-Reads. These are the books that set the bar for the genre, or one of its subgenres, the novels that are so amazing you go back and re-read, unless your copy is lent out to someone who hasn’t returned it yet because they are busy re-reading it for the eleventieth… read more »

HaBO: Back Cover Copy Read In Grocery Store

November 16, 2010 | Tuesday | 26 Comments

I swear, some HaBOs are like missed encounters, where you idly pick up the book and see what it says, then realize hours later that you’d LOVE to read it - only to never see the book again. Jeanne has a story like that - and my apologies to her, as her original email was lost and then found. A few years ago while standing at the checkout in a grocery store I picked up a romantic comedy that intrigued me but I didn’t have enough $$ on me at the time to afford.  When I went back for it… read more »

Your Opinions Please: Romance Reading and Real Life

November 09, 2010 | Tuesday | 95 Comments

I’m still at work on the in-progress “Everything I Know About Love, I Learned from Romance Novels,” and I wanted to again humbly ask for your help and your perspective. You are among the smartest folks I know, anyway, so how can I not come begging? (I am almost done and promise not to do this in neverending annoyingpants fashion). I’m currently working on how romances influence readers, and want to ask you: Have romance novels helped you with real life relationships? How? Or, in the words of my least favorite essay questions, “Why or why not?” Which books left… read more »

Links of Joy, Fuzzy Feelings, and Really Beautiful Men

November 07, 2010 | Sunday | 93 Comments

Want to grin? Have some happy, thoughtful links. An Ode to Emilie Loring, romance author. Thanks to Holly G. for that link. Q: Which romance authors (you can only name one) remain enduring favorites through every single book they wrote? New or older authors, doesn’t matter. (I predict the top three favorites from the comments will be Heyer, Roberts, and McMaster-Bujold. My choice is Julia Spencer-Fleming, mostly because I’m going through a palate-cleanse of mystery reading and I can’t stop turning back to her books to enjoy and savor her character building and small-world-building skills. Mills & Boon has a… read more »

Your Opinion Please: The Ideal Romance Hero and Heroine Traits

October 26, 2010 | Tuesday | 145 Comments

I’m working on the new book-in-progress, “Everything I Know About Love, I Learned from Romance Novels,” and I wanted to humbly ask for your help and your perspective. I’m working on a chapter about the traits most commonly found in romance heroes and heroines (I’m also attempting to use the word “heroes” to describe both, but I think I may have to undo those in editing because hero seems to communicate to most people a masculine, not feminine, role). What would you say the most common and essential traits are among romance heroes and heroines? Faithfulness? Honor? Strength? Creativity? Instant… read more »
