Who are the people in the neighborhood, the people in the sidebar each day? They’re the advertisers, and I’m starting a new feature where each month I give you a round up of who is supporting the site this month. The advertisers in the neighborhood help me run contests, pay for international postage, do some conference travel, pay for postage, cover fees and web hosting, assist in bribery of the Esosoft technical support staff when we Google bomb Amazon on Easter Sunday, underwrite postage and cover other expenses like postage. (Guess which is the largest item in my budget?) So…

Thanks to Dr. Vivanco, who is 200 times more cool than “Los Vivancos,” we have… an academic paper about you. No, really. Awhile back Candy and I were contacted by a grad student doing an ethnographic study of the Bitchery style of communication. Miriam Greenfield Benovitz presented her paper, “The Interactive Online Romance Community: Contests and ‘Covers Gone Wild’” at the annual meeting of the International Communication Association in May 2008, and her paper has been made available online. You can find a link to the PDF on that page. Another link to the PDF can be found at the…

David Nygren over at The Urban Elitist asked if I’d be willing to be interviewed, and I said, “Sure, why not?” Then he sent me questions and I had to think about things, like how our site grew to be the community that it is, and what we did to foster that community (huh?), and our decision to run ads, and why we do our own ad management. I’m very pleased with how the interview turned out, so if you’re interested in my perspective of how and why we did what we do here at the Hot Pink Bitchery HQ,…

Peace Corps Emily in Senegal has a note for you: Dear SBTB readers, On behalf of all Senegalese Peace Corps volunteers, I want to thank all you Smart Bitches for your incredible generosity. Thanks to your contributions, I was able to raise more than $2,000 in three days. The money keeps coming in and I’ve exceeded my goal! I will now be able to create an additional computer lab in my village, and the excess money will go to provide children in other villages the same access. I tried to personally thank all of my donors, but some of you…

Ever supporting my belief that the readers of this site are some of the most amazing people walking the planet, Emily in Senegal has a funny story and a humble request. Emily, if you recall, was a HaBO request some months ago before she left for the Peace Corp. Now that she’s on assignment and workin’ it, she’s discovered a few new ways to help the community she’s in, and in particular, helped someone discover through petty larceny the power of Susan Elizabeth Phillips. (Note: Larceny is how I discovered romance, so I have a tiny feeling of shame at…

Oh, my stars, did I miss this place. Hellooooo palace of hot pink wonderpants. We’ve upgraded, cleaned out the closets, and added a section. See up there? Book? Yeah - that’s the big part. Excerpts, outtakes, and quotes and press coverage. As we hear about reviews, we’ll add them to the collection. Good, bad, indifferent - doesn’t matter. Welcome back! What did you do while we were gone? Me, I was busy. Holy shit, I was a whore for the bloggin’. While Baba was napping (double ear infection plus ruptured ear drum, poor thing) I went on an impromptu blog…

It’s a strange thing to be hungry, amused, and oddly tempted all at the same time, but thanks to the purple prose wonderment of the Smart Bitch Recipe competition for our fourth birthday, we’re all three, though especially amused.
We have six winners, plus the grand prize winner, who is one seminally lucky individual! (snrk)
The Grand Prize: Your choice of one of the six appliances featured PLUS a luscious semen cookbook. Oh, you’re all on the edge of your seats, eh? The lucky winner is:

On January 30, 2005, Candy and I started this here website, kicking off the hot pink castle of bitchin’ with an A- review. Now, four years later, a lot has changed. But the best parts have not: our readers are some of the coolest people we’ve ever met (most notably the lurkers. Hi lurkers!) and we are so pleased you stop by every now and again to talk romance with us. So when it came time to figure out what to do to mark our fourth birthday, I took a look at what the traditional and modern anniversary gifts are…

From of the awesome folks at Ninth Moon, I have 3 sets of B.I.C.H.O.K. magnets for today’s prize. If you’re not familiar, that stands for “Butt In Chair, Hands on Keyboard.” This was my mantra earlier this year while writing The Book, and I love these magnets. They crack me up. So, want a set? Leave a comment and tell us what task you are most proud of accomplishing this year. Mine is no secret: writing the Bitch Book, when I’d never written a book before and didn’t honestly know if I could, is something I’m ineffably proud of, and…

Greetings Bitchery members. I am attacking the final touches on a t-shirt/mug/what the hell ever else operation for the Smart Bitches, and want your slogans. Ideas for shirts? Designs? Absolute must-haves?
Bring. Them. On. Leave ‘em in the comments. Or, better yet, if you have a design idea, please, email me a jpg. If we use it, I’ll hook you up with an item of swag.
So ideas, you has them. Kthxbye.

I’m trying out a new search feature here at BitchHQ, called Lijit. If you take a look down yonder in the search column, instead of the multiple drop down boxes of content, there’s now two (reviews by grade and reviews by author) and a new search entry form. Type a word in there and you’ll get an overlay that displays results for the site, plus the rest of the whole dang internet if you want. I’m liking it so far, especially because as the site gets bigger ever single day holy smoke, it gets more cumbersome to search so I’m…
