LINKS. Coded in HTML.

April 13, 2011 | Wednesday | 18 Comments

I know, can you imagine? HTML on the internet. What is the world coming to?! Won’t someone please think of the children? First, from the comments of the review of The Luckiest Girl: an interview with Beverly Cleary. Thank you SO MUCH to Diana for the link. Yesterday was Cleary’s 95th birthday - and she’s still writing. How awesome is that? From Rebecca: here’s a game at the McCord Museum website where you can navigate Victorian life! OH, this is so cool. You can choose to be a male or a female, and then select the location. For example, if… read more »

Happy Birthday and Coronation for Malle Vallik

February 03, 2011 | Thursday | 17 Comments

When I first started this site with Candy, I didn’t know much about anything concerning publishing. Then I learned a lot, and a lot fast, and I’ve met amazing people - such as Malle Vallik, Dictatrix of All Things Digital (that’s totally not her title, obviously) and one smart person when it comes to looking at how women read, and thinking about and predicting how the way we read is changing. I call her The Oracle of eBook. It was her idea to have blogger bundles, collections of Harlequin backlist titles loved by romance bloggers and romance readers, for example.… read more »

Assorted Brief Links of Awesome

August 18, 2010 | Wednesday | 22 Comments

I wouldn’t pass it along if it weren’t worth looking at - so have some linkage! First, Susanna Fraser has the single greatest author website known to man. Or woman. Or both and everything in between. Second, my Sizzling Summer Book Club pick, Kristan Higgins’ All I Ever Wanted is on the USA Today list at #102. Check out the listing though - it’s got that sexy (E) next to it—which means it made the list as an ebook. HOLY SMOKE. That is hot sexy awesome right there! Seriously, I cannot wait to talk about this book on Friday. You… read more »

Romance Writers, Fiction & Nonfiction

March 16, 2010 | Tuesday | 15 Comments

Romance writers have, or have had, a myriad of jobs. One of my favorite things about romance writer bios is how one snapshot of a writer’s career history could include everything from taxonomy to tax preparation. And, surprise, surprise, romance writers often write… other stuff. Jenny Gardiner, whose book Sleeping with Ward Cleaver was the American Title III winner, has a new book out - but it’s non fiction. And it’s a memoir. About her psychotic parrot. No lie. Alyssa Day, whose newest book, Atlantis Redeemed, just come out last week, also wrote a nonfiction memoir several years ago about… read more »

It’s a strange thing to be hungry, amused, and oddly tempted all at the same time, but thanks to the purple prose wonderment of the Smart Bitch Recipe competition for our fourth birthday, we’re all three, though especially amused. We have six winners, plus the grand prize winner, who is one seminally lucky individual! (snrk) The Grand Prize: Your choice of one of the six appliances featured PLUS a luscious semen cookbook. Happy 4th Anniversary to Us!

January 30, 2009 | Friday | 70 Comments

On January 30, 2005, Candy and I started this here website, kicking off the hot pink castle of bitchin’ with an A- review. Now, four years later, a lot has changed. But the best parts have not: our readers are some of the coolest people we’ve ever met (most notably the lurkers. Hi lurkers!) and we are so pleased you stop by every now and again to talk romance with us. So when it came time to figure out what to do to mark our fourth birthday, I took a look at what the traditional and modern anniversary gifts are… read more »

Words Every Reader Loves to Hear: Sixteen Free Books!

January 29, 2009 | Thursday | 51 Comments

As part of Harlequin’s 60th Anniversary, they have a rather auspicious and frankly asskicking plan: to give a free e-book to every woman in America and Canada as part of their celebration. All formats are included, including PDF, and each and every one is DRM free. The books will be available for the Stanza program on the iPhone, and you can go to the eHarlequin site for all the details and info on how to pick up your free books. Plus, and this makes me really freaking giddy, these books will be free at all e-retailers, including Amazon and Sony.… read more »

An Enema, A Birthday Spanking, A Love Story by J G Knox

December 04, 2008 | Thursday | 43 Comments

ToroHo sent me a link. It was very mean of her. It was a link to the book you see pictured over there: An Enema, A Birthday Spanking, A Love Story. The title of the actual paperback seems to read “When the Jonquils Bloom Again: Book One,” but the Amazon.com title is all enemas and spanking. Is there a better way to catch people’s attention as they look for something to read? Spankings and poo? Sign me up! No, wait, don’t. I downloaded the Kindle sample (Kindle: Nom nom..What?!) and, well, in the interest of complete honesty, I went to… read more »

DocTurtle: The Final Episode

December 01, 2008 | Monday | 21 Comments

Here’s the final episode of DocTurtle’s snarking of a contemporary category romance novel: a mathematician reads Kathleen O’Reilly’s Sex, Straight Up! Almost there, folks. It’s been a few weeks since I last snarked on this book, and even longer than that since I read the chapters I’m supposed to be snarking, so I’m finding myself re-reading the book trying to recapture my feel for it. As I admitted in my last post, I finished reading the book in one sitting one morning before heading off to class.  Although it would be a stretch to call the book’s ending thrilling, I… read more »

Smart Bitches Love Cake, and Our Readers

September 29, 2008 | Monday | 43 Comments

Once upon a time, Candy wrote a review for Shayla Black’s Decadent which has since become one of the most linked-to portions of the site, and was the nadir of a little-known gem of internet delight known as “LOLPorn.” Seriously, people link to that entry with astonishing regularity. I don’t know if we’ve ever really expounded on our deep love for the folks who read this site, but damn hell and howdy do we love y’all. When we hold contests with other folks, invariably they’ll write, “You have the best readers, OMG.” It’s true. You guys are freaking awesome. Why?… read more »

Hot Cake Weekend

September 12, 2008 | Friday | 16 Comments

This weekend we are all about cake at my house - someone small and mighty is having a birthday (“OMG HAS IT BEEN A YEAR WTF UNDERNEATH THAT ALSO BBQ” is what the cake should say but alas, cooler heads prevailed). Too bad this cake isn’t available in13 more years, because everyone knows, the traditional 14th birthday is the Man Titty Birthday. Or the “unbutton my fly” birthday. Or the “future Ellora’s Cave cover” birthday. read more »
