GS vs. STA: BDSM Romance

March 07, 2012 | Wednesday | 67 Comments

Cecilia Tan (no relation to Candy that I know of!) tweeted at me, asking in the midst of Yet More 50 Shades of Grey BrouHaHa if there were any BDSM romances that weren't 50 Shades that I might recommend:  She later emailed me:  "Shit to Avoid" is very useful to know, too! Well-written and well-known is probably where I should start[.] So I just read "The Story of L" by Debra Hyde ( A | BN | K | S ), and loved it. It's a lesbian "Story of O" but done as a romance. In fact, it's pretty much the opposite of… read more »

50 Shades of Grey by E.L. James

November 21, 2011 | Monday | 54 Comments

So many readers have recommended this book to me. SO MANY. It has a 4.49 average after 1,728 ratings on GoodReads and 4.5 stars after 100 reviews on Amazon. Readers on Twitter have told me how much they adore this book, how they love the hero, love the story, love every one of the 200k pages of this book (which ends on a cliffhanger and continues in volume two, Fifty Shades Darker). Alas, this book didn't work for me. I kept trying, and going back to it more than I normally would because of the number of people who adore… read more »

HaBO-Thon: Won’t You Take Me To Kinky Town?

August 13, 2011 | Saturday | 12 Comments

This is a HaBO from Jess for a series, and I have no doubt someone will guess this one almost immediately. There was a series I read (well, at least three books) that involved a small town that was full of kink. Everyone was in some sort of “kinky” relationship, such as polyamory or D/s. While I can’t remember the author or titles, I DO remember that one book involved a the sister of a town member (who was married to a Dom), who ended up with two brothers, and they broke her heart because they misunderstood a phone conversation… read more »

Susan Donovan, Save the Contemporary, and Gettin’ Lucky: An Interview

May 24, 2010 | Monday | 36 Comments

When Jane Litte and I hosted a session on “Save the Contemporary” at RT this year, in the middle of a discussion, we discovered that in the audience was contemporary romance author Susan Donovan. I think my literal response was, “Oh, cool!” So when she got in touch with me later, I suggested an interview, because I was curious what she thought of the contemporary market, and romance in general. You visited our Save the Contemporary panel and we were very excited to meet you - thank you for coming. What do you love most about contemporary romance, reading and… read more »

Christian Domestic Discipline: Old-Skool Romance Come to Life?

December 11, 2008 | Thursday | 72 Comments

I’ve had these links open on my Firefox browser for a couple of days now, since Caitlyn sent them to me. Honestly, I’m not sure what to think here. It’s like the scary answer to the question, what if you crossed BDSM with a thread of Fundamental Christian ideology and rhetoric, wherein spanking became God’s will? According to the tenets of Christian Domestic Discipline, the husband is the head of the wife as “Christ is the head of the church,” and because of that, discipline in the form of spanking and related forms of corporal punishment are a necessary inclusion… read more »

BDSM Sells Cars

June 10, 2008 | Tuesday | 10 Comments

Crystal Jordan sent me a very interesting link - an interactive ad demonstrating how the Mini Cooper can whipslap winter, using a pleather-clad woman whipping, stroking, and otherwise dominating a very sport blue Mini. So: those in the BDSM world - is her whipping technique at all accurate? Or is she faking it? read more »
