Beguiling the Beauty by Sherry Thomas - a guest review by CarrieS

May 21, 2012 | Monday | 10 Comments

Beguiling the Beauty is a late Victorian era romance that meets my geek criteria because of its use of science, specifically the study of fossils and the rise of evolutionary biology.  My husband is an evolutionary biologist, so needless to say I was thrilled when I found out that Sherry Thomas' new book has an evolutionary biologist hero.  I'm a huge Sherry Thomas fan and this book did not disappoint.  In fact, it is by far my favorite book of hers, in no small part because it features the line, "Thank you for dinner.  And thank you for the pleasure… read more »

Friday Videos Think Anything Goes

May 18, 2012 | Friday | 19 Comments

I saw this on Ceilidhann's Twitter and it made me grin in a wonderfully silly way. This is the cast of Broadway's Anything Goes doing their version of One Direction:  Link!  It is a sad fact that I don't love musicals, so much of Broadway is lost on me, but I love Anything Goes, and I want to see it just because this cast looks like they are having SUCH a good time.  I hope your weekend is full of all the things that make you want to sing and dance.  read more »

Book Rant: Guess This Book!

May 17, 2012 | Thursday | 86 Comments

I received the following book rant from Nali, and it's totally over The Top and back down the other side of The Top and climbing back up again. But this time - there is book rant challenge! I challenge you to guess which book this is? I'll give you a hint: it was published in the late 70s, and when I read this, I remembered reading it, and remembered the highfalutin' hilarity therein. Hang on, folks. It's wild.  I am so glad I found your site this week. The timing, it was Serendipitous, falling into place with the convenient ease… read more »

The Brenda Novak Auction: Addictive, as Usual

May 15, 2012 | Tuesday | 16 Comments

It's May! My peonies are blooming, the air is flush with good smells and yellow dust, and my blue car is now a strange shade of pollen-coated green. It's also time for the Brenda Novak Auction, which has raised over $1.3 million dollars for a cure for juvenile diabetes. The auction is going on all month - and there are a lot of really neat things to bid on. Let's go shopping! In the Once in a Lifetime Experiences category, there's a two night stay at the Ritz Carlton in Lake Tahoe, and as I write this, the high bid… read more »

Her Best Worst Mistake by Sarah Mayberry

May 14, 2012 | Monday | 30 Comments

I started this book last Saturday morning while my kids were at swim lessons, and I was in a dark, humid, and loud indoor pool on uncomfortable bleachers. I did not notice any of those things once I started reading. This book is amazing: confident and clever, funny and touching, and wonderfully done. This book is a simultaneous story - Mayberry's Harlequin Blaze, Hot Island Nights ( A | BN | K | S | ARe ), takes place at the same time with two separate characters. Is there a name for that style of storytelling? I know Twin of… read more »

An Annotated Bibliography of Contemporary Romance Scholarship on Romance Readers

May 14, 2012 | Monday | 11 Comments

Awhile back, I was contacted by Beth, a library science student, about doing a school project. She needed to create an annotated bibliography, and wanted to know if I'd like to be her "client" for the project: "I am taking a course called Search and Discovery, which is a fancy name for using and evaluating online research tools and databases. Our final project for the course is to compile an annotated bibliography for someone with a research need." I fail to see how this could possibly be a bad thing. Beth has piles and piles of databases at her fingertips,… read more »

Edgy Moms in Suburbia: A Recap

May 11, 2012 | Friday | 6 Comments

Brigid asked for a recap of the event I was part of last Wednesday night, Edgy Moms in Suburbia, so here's my wrap up of the evening - with a LOT of links to books I want to buy, so be ye warned. They're not romances, though, so at least that's something.  I drafted my essay (or entry or article or whatever it was I was trying to write) about four or five different times, trying to figure out what the hell was edgy about me (I am not edgy. I am very rounded in all my parts), and ended up… read more »

Friday Videos Love the 80s (And Wine and Beer)

May 11, 2012 | Friday | 7 Comments

From Petra comes this very silly and marvelously costumed commercial from New Zealand. As Petra says, "This is the ad for DB breweries in New Zealand. Although it shamelessly encourages the stereotypical dumb male - it never fails to crack my shit up. " Link! Those are some of the most glorious 80s haircuts and fashions I've beheld in recent weeks - not that I see a lot of 80s fashion, though I did see a pair of stonewashed pleated jean shorts on someone in Times Square and I did a double-take. Next it's peg jeans and scrunchy socks, right?  I hope… read more »

The Governess Affair by Courtney Milan

May 09, 2012 | Wednesday | 41 Comments

I have a lot to say about this novella, so let's get the plot summary part done - which is not easy as a lot happens in a short space. Serena Barton was fired from her position as a governess because she was raped by the duke of Clermont, but because she didn't fight back or shout when it happened, she holds herself partially responsible. Serena is determined to be heard and seen now that she's pregnant, and decides for her own sake and the sake of the child she's now carrying, she will sit outside the duke's home and humiliate… read more »

Heroic Wardrobe Decisions

May 09, 2012 | Wednesday | 61 Comments

I notice that when I read romances, I really enjoy scenes from the hero's point of view. I love the change in perspective, but more importantly, I love scenes where, because I know the character from the prose, I almost know already what he's thinking. But then, I realized, we've known for a long time what men are thinking in romanceland. Take, for example, these marvelous examples of portraiture which are all courtesy of the amazing old skool collection of JamiSings, who scanned and sent all these images to me. I think we've been subtly taught by these cover images… read more »

A Handful of Links, and a Ton of Sales

May 08, 2012 | Tuesday | 21 Comments

Be Ye Warned, HarperCollins has put an epic ton of books on sale today, including a pile of Barbara Delinsky's backlist, and some lovely books by Brenda Joyce. I'm sorry in advance. But first, links! I don't know how I ended up reading about women in the pornography industry, but this link came from Darien the day after I'd read for hours online about how women work in the porn industry - and not in front of the camera. First, I read this article about women who work behind the scenes (no pun intended) including one woman who is the… read more »
