Audible Launches ACX, Self Publishing for Audio Books

May 12, 2011 | Thursday | 19 Comments

Per Shelf Awareness today, Audible has launched ACX, which enables authors to create audiobooks of their work, either by narrating them or by hiring voice actors from the registered database of talent. Here, have a video about it, featuring two actors who really irritated me with their pseudo-bashful self-congratulatory demeanor: The upshot is that so many excellent books are not made into audio books, and with the increasing success of self-publishing ventures in digital and print-on-demand, audiobooks are a natural extension of that success. The ACX program is available to authors at a flat rate or at a 50/50 share… read more »

Different Flavors of Interactive and Intriguing Promotion

February 10, 2010 | Wednesday | 37 Comments

Behold: three very different but very interesting bits of book promotion that have made their way to my inbox or mailbox. First: Nora Roberts’ alter ego JD Robb is releasing her 30th book in the Eve/Roarke series. And check out the promotional bundle that appeared with a copy of the book: evidence bags! Each bag contains key evidence from one of the prior books, and there are 29 sets in all. Included is a memo from Eve Dallas that refers to a website where you can see all the different evidence bags that were sent out to reviewers and media… read more »

Well, the book is done and is available through December as an audiobook but only in chapter sections online. It’ll be available for download starting in January. If you’re a Gaiman fan, or are curious how this collaboration turned out, you can listen to each chapter online. read more »

TweetCamp at Booksquare University

June 10, 2009 | Wednesday | 4 Comments

One of the things I am most interested in is the online education potential for authors, readers, reviewers, and all them publishing type folks who are curious about how to use Twitter, Facebook, blogs, mySpace, podcasting, etc. for online marketing and publicity. Booksquare University has positioned itself perfectly to offer online workshops on how to use key tools for online promotion, starting with Tweet Camp. The video introducing TweetCamp is fantastic, particularly because it cuts through the media hype in the first two minutes, and asks those curious about Twitter to look at it in a new way: “What if… read more »

BBC Car Shows, The Stig, and Romance Novels

June 22, 2008 | Sunday | 46 Comments

Bitchery Reader Fizz sent me an email that led to the Google Search of Champions. Heather writes about: potentially THE most powerful endorsement of romance in the known universe. See, there is this show called Top Gear, aired on the BBC and hosted by Jeremy Clarkson (AKA ‘Clarkson’), Richard Hammond (‘Hamster’) and James May (‘Captain Slow’). TG is a car show at heart - it’s a hilariously awesome car show, but it’s basically all about the shiny bodywork and VROOM VROOM noises, with the occasional deep and meaningful question…like for example, “How many motorcycles can you jump in a bus?”… read more »

Got Mac? Wanna make your own Audiobooks?

April 15, 2008 | Tuesday | 10 Comments

Today’s MacZot is lovely interesting if you’re into hearing your own books: Narrator reads text aloud, using multiple voices if you’d like. Once you’ve selected a portion of text you want to hear, you can identify which voice reads what, and then export the whole thing to iTunes. Make your own audio books? Listen to your work in progress as an editing technique? Ask the different voices to read vaguely obscene phrases so you can giggle like a 10-year-old boy? Whatever blows your skirt up. Very cool. read more »
