I’m Sorry But.

November 18, 2010 | Thursday | 65 Comments

You know those people who will say, in two different sets of inflections, “I’m sorry, but….”? There’s the “I’m sorry, but…” where in you apologize sarcastically for having a negative opinion, and the “I’m sorry, but…” wherein you apologize half-assedly and then defend yourself in the same breath, thereby negating your apology. Enter Judith Griggs. Well, she’s reentering. She’s kind of refusing to leave the stage at this point and someone needs to carry her off. (ETA: It appears she’s taken down her website entirely. There is a a Google cache, the text of which is what I’m addressing here.)… read more »

Halloween’s Virgin Stable Girl

October 31, 2009 | Saturday | 14 Comments

It’s not enough to torture me with your sexy maple syrup and your really beautiful mountains and your balls-ass cold frozen north and your sexy functional national health care plan, is it? Oh, no Harlequin up ‘ere in Canada, you have to taunt me with your Halloween party, too! For those of you not on Twitter yesterday, Harelquin Digital Team announced that Jayne & Sulemaan from the Digital team won their Halloween costume contest as The Playboy Sheikh and the Virgin Stable-Girl. No, really. Here’s a picture. HOW AWESOME IS THAT!!!?? I believe, though it can’t be seen in the… read more »

A Real Alpha Male

August 22, 2009 | Saturday | 55 Comments

On this blog entry are two voicemail messages left by a guy who is apparently an absolute legend in his own mind. You can also download an MP3 of the voicemail duo of power right here.  (Right click please. Esosoft’s happy server thanks you). Romance writers, take note. Hero material. Or, anti hero. Or something. read more »

Bummer Dude

June 11, 2009 | Thursday | 4 Comments

I’ve had to close comments on entries more than 60 days old to try to stop the spamming that’s been driving me batty. This makes me sad because I enjoy it when people find an older entry and revisit it, or leave a comment on a thread that’s suddenly topical again. But alas, spam sucks, Akismet wasn’t getting the job done, and Expression Engine and I are still at a stalemate. Sorry about that, folks. Anything that curtails the conversation bums me out like damn. read more »

From the “Oh, For Fuck’s Sake” Department

February 10, 2009 | Tuesday | 111 Comments

Nikki Lomax-Larson of Military Spouse Magazine has a bit of a problem. She’s a big reader. That’s not the actual problem. Well, there’s multiple problems from where I sit. There’s her admission of secretly desiring to be the creme filling in a Weasley sandwich, and her statement that voracious childhood reading caused her to wear bifocals by third grade. And then there’s this paragraph, which is a light, moist, seven-layer cake of problems: But the one genre I never, ever touched was romance.  I couldn’t bring myself to sample the “junk food” of the literary world.  That was, until my… read more »

Drinking Game Time!

January 01, 2009 | Thursday | 8 Comments

Want to get drunk really fast this evening? Here: read this article about male Mills & Boon romance author Gill Sanderson. Every time the reporter makes a snide or unnecessary dig about romance: drink! You’ll be blotto by the midpoint. I’m counting at least 10. I’m enormously impressed with Mr. Sanderson’s forbearance with this article, but I throw a flag and issue a 15 yard penalty for reporter Peter Jackson. Unnecessary roughness, loss of down. [Thank you to the many, many readers who forwarded me the link.] read more »

Further Dispatches from the “Fiction Not Memoir” Department, Holocaust Division

December 29, 2008 | Monday | 39 Comments

I can’t even measure the size of the dent my head left on my countertop (ow) upon reading this story. The small saving grace is that Hillel Italie yet again does a bang-up job of covering it: Berkley Books has cancelled Herman Rosenblat’s memoir Angel at the Fence after it was revealed that, well, it’s not a memoir. It’s fiction: [Rosenblat] acknowledged that he and his wife did not meet, as they had said for years, at a sub-camp of Buchenwald, where she allegedly sneaked him apples and bread. While Rosenblat was indeed at Buchenwald, as historical documentation proves, his… read more »

Flag on the Play: The NYTimes Book Review

December 17, 2008 | Wednesday | 30 Comments

There have been a few reviews published this week on The Jewel of Medina. USA Today was hardly complimentary, and the New York Times was so sniffy I’m suspecting nasal spray was involved. But I’m handing out penalties to the Times and to writer Lorraine Adams, because there are some serious flags on the play in her review. read more »

Jane Porter

December 02, 2008 | Tuesday | 13 Comments

I’m hoping Jane Porter‘s sense of humor is iron clad and in top shape.. Not only did the trolling asscheeses of hell unleash themselves in the comments to a Seattle PI article about Porter’s book-to-movie on Lifetime this month, but it seems the poor woman is also being seduced in fiction. With bondage! Is “not Googling the name of one’s heroine” the new black? Because dude. Ouch. [Thanks to Serena Robar for the link.] read more »
