Heads up! Loveswept is back this time as a digital imprint. I think this is supremely smart of Random House. But watch, since Random House is an agency publisher now (BOOOOOOOOO), the digitally reissued Loveswepts will be $44.99 or some crazy thing. If the price is right, this could so rock. I’m devouring category romances right now. My latest Kirkus column is a review of Kate Noble’s Follow My Lead, which I enjoyed quite much of a lot. So much happens in the course of this book that the journey is the best part, from their needle-in-a-haystack hunt for a… read more »

Ebook Survey Ahoy

February 04, 2010 | Thursday | 60 Comments

Jane from DearAuthor, Angie James from Carina, and I are on a panel at the O’Reilly Tools of Change in Publishing conference about what readers want, and I’m hoping that you have a spare 10 minutes or so to complete a survey about your reading habits, your buying habits, and, if you’re a digital reader, some of your pet peeves about that subject. The survey is online, is absolutely confidential (we ask you about piracy, and not the sexy puffy shirt kind, either) BUT if you complete it, you’re entered to win a drawing for $250 towards the ebook reader… read more »

Publishers Weekly on Romance Readers

November 17, 2009 | Tuesday | 16 Comments

Jane Litte, Angela James, Malle Vallik and I are quoted in an amazing article about romance readers and digital books. Here’s the catch: much like a book that rocks in the content but makes you cringe in embarrassment at the cover, you must skip past the headline to get to the good part. Well, no, you can’t really skip it because it’s the first thing you see, so let’s get to that first: When it comes to format, romance readers are promiscuous Just like authors have no control the cover art or titles of their books, journalists have little control… read more »

Carina Press

November 09, 2009 | Monday | 40 Comments

It’s stars and astronomy time! Carina is a constellation in the Southern sky, and is Latin for “keel” - as in, the fins and structures operating below the surface of the water unseen yet keeping the ship balanced, and on its course. Here’s an interesting bit of physics I didn’t know: the keel’s job is to convert a sideways force to a forward force, sort of like trying to figure out how to convert a changing tide or market to keep your industry moving forward. Nice name. It’s even more awesome when applied to Harlequin, who launched Carina Press today,… read more »

Editors Fill Holiday Holes Via Twitter

June 16, 2009 | Tuesday | 11 Comments

Angela James has a call for submissions up on her website - which isn’t a big deal, if you think about it. But what caught my attention is that this is the second time I’ve seen an editor reach out directly to writers via blogs or Twitter. First was Heather Osborn, who said over Twitter that she had a hole in her publishing calendar and needed an urban fantasy/paranormal manuscript that was completed and ready to go. It was the Tweet heard round the world - I think Heather ended up with something like 25+ manuscripts in her inbox in… read more »
