Links: Book Club Chat, Amazon Reviews, and Jim C Hines Rules The World With His Backside

April 24, 2012 | Tuesday | 22 Comments

First! A friendly reminder: the Sizzling Book Club Chat for Tamara Morgan's Love is a Battlefield is Thursday night at 9pm! Need a handy button to add that to your trusty calendar? Here you go: I hope you'll join us! I'm trying to figure out if I can simultaneously host the chat at the SBTB Facebook page, too, so you may be able to hang out at Ye Olde Face Booke and join in from there. I have been on a serious contemporary romance kick lately, and I hope you enjoyed this book as much as I did. The Department of Justice and Publishing

April 11, 2012 | Wednesday | 14 Comments

If you're reaction to the Department of Justice is a bit of "what?" and "huh?" here's plenty of explanation and education. First, you can read the documents filed by the Department of Justice (pdf) in New York's Southern District court. The documents explain the case, the processes of print and ebook publishing, and allegations that caused the suit to be filed. Point of note: references to "horizontal conspiracy" create mental images that are unintentionally silly. (I went and looked for a few links to explain the basics of antitrust, and I discovered a strange phenomenon. Many of the pages that explain the… read more »

Links and News

January 25, 2012 | Wednesday | 27 Comments

Via Publisher's Lunch (Free reg. req.): recipe site AllRecipes was purchased by Meredith Corp for $175 million dollars. Among the final four bidders: Random House and Amazon.com. AllRecipes is a site I use frequently, and the strength of the community there is based on reviews and commentary on the recipes. I rarely use a recipe that doesn't have reviews and comments, especially from folks who have modified it to suit their tastes. The strength of AllRecipes is in the community of reviewers and their commitment to critique and improvement more than just the database of recipes, and with the number… read more »

Bezos and Butthead: My Review of the Kindle Fire

November 16, 2011 | Wednesday | 30 Comments

I had two questions when I opened the Kindle Fire package and started to play with the device last night: 1. Would this device be as easy to use as the other Kindle products, the ones that come with the world’s shortest printed user guide? 2. Who is the ideal customer or customers for the Kindle Fire? No, wait, I had a third question: 3. Could I get through a device demo with Hubby on the sofa next to me without either of us saying, “FIRE! FIRE!” There was a good bit of Beavis and Butthead while we tried out… read more »

Everything I Know About Love, I Learned from Romance Novels: Pre-Order Information

September 13, 2011 | Tuesday | 19 Comments

Good morning! This post is all about the book I wrote that is coming out 4 October, and where you can pre-order a copy, should you be so inclined. Why Should I Preorder This Book? Well, if you’re at all curious and are on the fence, let me tell you something about EIKAL. I am so proud of this book. I know every author is proud of her books (at least, I hope so) but I am so very, very proud of this one, and I will tell you why. This book is much more than just me talking about… read more »

Midnight Sins and Errors

August 18, 2011 | Thursday | 94 Comments

One thing I have noticed in the past year or so is that the more romance readers are online speaking with one another, the faster we all get a working understanding of the publishing process. We learn more about how a book is produced, in other words, the more we speak with writers, editors, and publishing professionals. Remember Navarro’s Promise, where the promised sex scene was entirely missing? That scene is available as a download on her site. But alas, it seems the error-filled Lora Leigh books continue: the reviews for her latest book, Midnight Sins, are cringeworthy. But what… read more »

Holy Heyer Sale: $1.99 Heyer Digital Sale All Week

August 15, 2011 | Monday | 55 Comments

To celebrate Georgette Heyer’s birthday, Sourcebooks has put their entire digital collection of Heyer novels on sale for $1.99. NICE. Ready to shop? Hope so! I struggled recently with The Grand Sophy, which I read last week, but Heyer’s books are, unquestionably, quite a legacy to the romance community. $1.99 is quite a nice price, too. The books should be at this price from 15-21 August at most major e-retailers, though sometimes there is a delay with switching the price. You may have to check back. Here’s a comprehensive list for you. I’ve tried to find links to many major… read more »
