Sony Reader: Eat, Read, Sleep
by SB Sarah | August 17, 2010 | Tuesday at 11:57 am | 533 CommentsSony contacted me about doing a giveaway in celebration of the premiere of Eat Pray Love, which hits theatres this week. A Sony Pocket! In sexy silver! With a leather case (that is really a beautiful shade of blue on the outside) and two download codes for both of Elizabeth Gilbert’s books! Woo hoo for digital reading devices!
I know many of you are paper reading fanatics - which is absolutely awesome with sauce - but if you’re curious about trying digital reading but haven’t gathered all your pennies into one place to buy one, here’s a chance to win one, AND get a beautiful leather cover (can you tell I really like that blue?) with two free books.
All you have to do is leave a comment here and tell me, if you won, which book would be the first book you’d put on your Sony Reader, aside from the two free downloads? A romance? A mystery? A book on how to make your own leather Sony Reader cover with skulls and crossbones? I’ll pick one at random and announce the winner on Friday 20 August (Good Lord willing, creeks don’t rise, etc). You’ve got 48 hours to tell me which book gets to be “FIRST!” in your Reader.
Disclaimer: I’m not being compensated for this giveaway. I don’t even get the pretty blue leather cover, much as I love that color like whoa and nelly. Tie your shoes. Machine wash cold, lay flat to dry. Do not dry clean. Not available at salons. Digital ink on 100% post-consumer bytes. Melts in your mouth, not in your hand. Not recommended for children. Prerecorded for this time zone. This broadcast has been reformatted to fit your screen. No solicitors. You can learn more about the bundle at the Sony Style store, and you can really really like Sony Readers on Facebook.

Oooh.. I’m first! Yay!
First book I will download would be…. Jennifer Crusie’s Maybe This Time. Just wish 31 August would come soon. Followed by Meljean Brook and Nalini Singh. (Yes, have not yet read all their books, clearing fast tho!). And, and, Eat Pray Love if I by some chance win. (Even if not!)

First would be Lord of Scoundrels, since you’ve all talked me into it.
Second would be the whole Anne of Green Gables series, because we all need some mobile Gilbert Blythe sometimes.
(captcha: mother67. Actually, 32, but sometimes I FEEL 67)

1st Book? Lots I want…but I think I’d go with Nora Roberts The Search. Followed closely by Robin Owens and Jayne Castle new releases. Anything by Christina Dodd… wow…I’m glad the readers hold more than one book at a time.
Debbie Q said on 08.17.10 at 12:32 PM • [comment link]
First book? Oh I don’t know, I don’t know. Decision, decisions. I would have to say The Lord of the Rings followed closely by Anne of Green Gables.
Nora B said on 08.17.10 at 12:52 PM • [comment link]
I would definitely put there all the books you guys have review as A and as D (for the fun of it), but for the first…
The first would be either The Bath Tangle by Georgette Heyer or The duke and I by Julia Quinn. Both ladies have great characters - especially the independent female ones. Heyer is of course the classic, but Quinn puts in the issues (sex!) no classic ever dared to mention.
Ok, so it has to be The duke and I.

_Cryoburn_ by Lois McMaster Bujold. I know - it is not out yet, but I do have the eARC!
Then I would load the rest of her books.

Jennifer Crusie’s Faking It. No question.

The second Gail Carriger’s Blameless comes out, bam, that is the first book in there. It’s coming out in like ten days, so that counts, right?
Alyssa said on 08.17.10 at 01:05 PM • [comment link]
I am looking forward to Vampire Trinity by Joey Hill, so that would probably be first.
Sarah W said on 08.17.10 at 01:08 PM • [comment link]
I think I’d download the collected works of Eloisa James, Jennifer Crusie, and Evelyn C. Smith (I love Miss Melville).
I would probably also get Derek Landy’s Skullduggery Pleasant books, since I’ve just discovered them and they are amazingly awesome. How can you not love the premise of a wisecracking skeleton detective and his teenage assistant, Valkyrie Cain (aka Stephanie)?
Brenda Chan said on 08.17.10 at 01:11 PM • [comment link]
Lois McMaster Bujold’s Vorkosigan series! Normally my first would definitely be a romance (Loretta Chase or Nalini Singh maybe) but I’ve been wanting to read Bujold for awhile now.
And that is a really, really lovely cover <3

Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins, I can’t enough of the series, I even bought them in hardcover for my husband since he doesn’t like reading in electronic format.
Cheryl Pangolin said on 08.17.10 at 01:23 PM • [comment link]
Hmmm, for a first book I might get Shades of Milk and Honey by Mary Robinette Kowal, which is a Jane-Austen-style novel only with fantasy elements (magic is real and ability with it is essential for a lady of good breeding…).
Bibliophile said on 08.17.10 at 01:23 PM • [comment link]
Mine would be The Talisman Ring my Gergette Heyer, because I just read such a fantastic review of it that I want to read it. This would be followed by the new Crusie and the new Pratchett as soon as they are out.
rd2129 said on 08.17.10 at 01:29 PM • [comment link]
First would have to be Pride and Prejudice, in honor of my favorite author.
So many options for the second…lately I’ve been obsessed with rereading “Lord of Scoundrels,” so this would be a convenient way to have that book with me to read whenever I want.
Adrienne said on 08.17.10 at 01:31 PM • [comment link]
My first would be Laurel K. Hamilton’s Circus of the Damned, followed closely by the other books in the series. The first eleven books are actually pretty good books, and after that they’re varying levels of terrible, but they’re really comforting in their terrible, since they’re terrible in all the same ways, like a sitcom that’s been on far too long.
Julia said on 08.17.10 at 01:36 PM • [comment link]
My first book would be Reckless by Anne Stuart, as I just finished Ruthless yesterday and am currently ablaze with “fabulous, fabulous, dark, gothic, love it, fabulous” energy. My husband would appreciate it if I stop talking to him about the book.
The second book I load on it would be Blameless, I am rocking back and forth waiting for it to some out this month.
Erin said on 08.17.10 at 01:36 PM • [comment link]
The first book I’d put on it would probably be Hitch 22 (Christopher Hitchens’ autobio) because I’ve been waiting for AGES for the paper copy from the library but they conveniently have a copy available on OverDrive. Alternately, I’d pick something trashy and worthy of a disguise (blue cover) and go with Only With Your Love (Kleypas).
Tara said on 08.17.10 at 01:36 PM • [comment link]
Thank you for the opportunity for this giveaway.
My first download? Most likely a J.D. Robb book. I had been interested in reading that series.
Sandy said on 08.17.10 at 01:39 PM • [comment link]
Right now, it would have to be Tough Customer: A Novel by Sandra Brown
Ellen said on 08.17.10 at 01:40 PM • [comment link]
Well afer I wiped away the tears of Joy… I would download all of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series. Which I’m sure could run me some serious scratch. They would be followed by my Text books because as a history teacher I must constantly work on my geek status and prove to my high school students that it is all not just a front. I mean just imagine how “Cool” I would seem to 9th and 10th graders as i strut into class holding my shiny new Sony Reader!!! I’m really not to proud to beg just a little. This device would make my life just a little easier.
JC said on 08.17.10 at 01:42 PM • [comment link]
I just moved to outside Washington DC and would totally rock the e-reader. I would probably download an erotic romance, since that’s the next book on my list I’d like to buy.
*crosses fingers*
Missy Ann said on 08.17.10 at 01:42 PM • [comment link]
1st book would be Robin D. Owen’s Heart Journey. I keep looking at it and putting it off, but shiny new reader? Shiny new book!

The Skull and Crossbones cover design sounds AWESOME! I would download my favorite book of all time, Bet Me by Jenny Crusie.
Kimberly Anne said on 08.17.10 at 01:49 PM • [comment link]
My very first download would be the collected works of the Bard. Because carrying Shakespeare in my Pocket (see what I did there?) would rock my stripey socks.
ijinx said on 08.17.10 at 01:50 PM • [comment link]
I’d put Bridge of Birds: A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was by Barry Hughart on the reader. It’s not a romance, but it’s my favourite book.
And I’d knit a cosy for the reader, too. In palest pink.
Tina said on 08.17.10 at 01:50 PM • [comment link]
My first book would be Darkfever (Fever Series #1) by Karen Marie Moning. I have to re-read the series in preparation for the last book in the series, Shadowfever. *sobs*
Security code “filled87” - yes, I would fill my new Sony ereader in about 87 seconds!

I would immediately load Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith because I want to read it SO BAD but am one of the poor, collegey types who not only can’t afford to buy it, but is still sweating off her library fine, so can’t check it out it either. But it looks great. It’s definitely calling my name.

My husband and I were watching a documentary on the Lord of the Rings books by JRR Tolkein last night, so I was thinking of reading the entire cycle again. That makes my first book on the Reader “The Hobbit”!
Trippinoutmysoul said on 08.17.10 at 02:04 PM • [comment link]
The first thing I’d do with an eReader is put the 131 ebooks I have on my desktop on it! My husband gripes at me all the time that they’re slowing down his World of Warcraft :/
The first NEW ebook I’d get would either be Jenny Crusie’s new one, or especially the Married with Zombies SBTB was so excellent to bring to my attention. The Husband typically snarks and smirks at my romance novel fixation, but zombies are something we definitely have in common- we’ve spent years revising and perfecting our family Zombie Attack Plan of Action :P
directly32- we have 32 contingency plans in the event of a zombie attack that will lead us directly to an advantageous location.

I’d have to get all the Georgette Heyer books that aren’t available in my library system, and then The Bronte Collection. Delicious.

It would definitely be a romance… Probably the new Teresa Maderios or Eloisa James novel.

My book would be Love in the Afternoon by Lisa Kleypas
Sarah L said on 08.17.10 at 02:09 PM • [comment link]
Probably my archives of Sam Hain; either that, or my ridiculously massive scifi collection from Baen, cause I <3 the free library.
(What? Eclectic Tastes. I Has Them)

My first book would have to be Dreams Made Flesh by Anne Bishop. I love the trilogy, but that book of short stories from the same world gets reread over and over again, and I have a very tattered paper copy already. It needs to go everywhere with me, heh.
...Then, of course, I’d have to load the REST of the Black Jewels series, and then move on to a bunch of my favorites from when I was a kid—like the Prydain Chronicles, and the Dark is Rising series, and Anne of Green Gables, and work my way into all the Nora Roberts books I’ve got on my ‘need to buy’ list—and THEN start loading up my very lengthy TBR list, :)

Well I am resistant to the ebook craze but I also like new tech things so I’m always a bit torn. If I got a free Sony Reader I think the first book I bought would be a mystery. The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest specifically because I borrowed the first two from my boss. She doesn’t want to buy the third until it’s in paperback and I hate owning just one book of a series and I hate owning a series where the books are in different formats. Ebook form would let me read it right now and it wouldn’t be messing up my bookshelves.l
Mary Beth said on 08.17.10 at 02:22 PM • [comment link]
It would be the new Elizabeth Hoyt, Eloisa James, or Lisa Kleypas release—whichever one I find first and click on “buy.”

Something major naughty, like Naughty Bits 2. To see if the e-ink screen steams up. Something about erotic romance on an electronic device appeals to me, in a BDSM sort of way.
Morning Glow said on 08.17.10 at 02:22 PM • [comment link]
First book I would put on there? Probably “Born To Bite” by Lynsay Sands, or “Maybe This Time” by Jennifer Crusie. Both books are released August 31, and I can read them sooner if I have the ebook (and pretty new reader, of course.)
Sonja said on 08.17.10 at 02:23 PM • [comment link]
I would get The God of the Hive by Laurie R King, because I’ve had a request in at the library for it for six months, and I just can’t wait anymore! Or maybe I would just get the new Nora Roberts. You know.
Sara said on 08.17.10 at 02:24 PM • [comment link]
Hmmm - that’s a really hard question. I’d probably buy Loretta Chase’s Last Night’s Scandal first (I’ve got a hankering to read it) and then probably Pride and Prejudice, as I must have my favorite book in all formats!
Kimberly Moffett said on 08.17.10 at 02:24 PM • [comment link]
I don’t have an exact book in mind, just as long as it has all the greats in it. I’m talking sassy heroines, embarrassing families, funny mishaps, and you can’t have a great book without the brooding he-man with a hidden heart of gold. I mean who doesn’t love that guy?!? So I would probably choose something from Dana Marie Bell or Janet Evanovich.
Michele Lee said on 08.17.10 at 02:26 PM • [comment link]
I admit the first thing I’d do (other than squee and play with it and show everyone the shiny) would be transfer the ebooks I already have on my computer onto it. Then I’ve had an hankering to reread P.C. Cast’s House of Night series, so I’d buy ebook versions of the two latest and read the whole series :)
Michelle Leonard said on 08.17.10 at 02:26 PM • [comment link]

Belladonna by Anne Bishop. I have the hard copy, and started trying to read it, but quickly discovered that my sitting with the sleeping 4mo on my shoulder made it very hard to turn pages. The problem compounded when a cat joined the pile. See? I’m beginning to think an eReader might be the only way I ever get to read a book again.
Sandy said on 08.17.10 at 02:36 PM • [comment link]

Ooh, where to start ... I think I would first get some of the books in my ‘to-read’ pile that are so heavy in hardcover or paperback that they make my wrists hurt. Rather off-putting! Then I would go on a spree at AllRomance because they have some really awesome looking ebooks but I do not like reading long stories at the computer, so I’ve been resisting. And I could increase my books without having to find more space on my shelves! (A rather important consideration, at this time. And I just donated boxes of books! Where did all these new ones come from?)

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies! I’ve been dying to read that since I saw it in a book kiosk at Denver Airport when it first came out - but I was on the way home and didn’t have enough in USD to buy it, and the Chapters here never seems to have it in stock. And it would be nice to not have to struggle to hold books for more than a few minutes at a time - reading on my computer isn’t very restful on the eyes, and it’s hard to snuggle up in bed with a good PC!
run73 - when I was a kid, we had to run 73 miles in the snow to and from school, uphill both ways…

Too hard to choose a first book. A romance from one of the e-pubs (since I hate to read long stories on the computer screen, and would like to try some alternatives to the bookstore imprints). No, one of JA Konrath’s thrillers because I keep reading his blog about his success in e-publishing and I’m curious as to how he actually writes. Or, knowing my daughter and her intense interest in 1) anything gadget-y 2) books and 3) anything of Mommy’s, I’d probably be a nice Mommy and download something for her that we can read together at bedtime (she’s 6). I wonder if there’s an e-book of Charlotte’s Web out there somewhere.
Amanda said on 08.17.10 at 02:58 PM • [comment link]
AAAAHHH!!! It’s because of THIS website that I want an e-reader. You guys have converted me from “Paper is the only way to read!”’ to “Gee, that sure would be nice so that I wouldn’t have to pack an extra suitcase of JUST books.” Unfortunately, I’m at the stage of life of “Law school is too expensive for you to be buying fancy gadgets!”
I would actually download TWO books right away. The last two Hathaway books by Lisa Kleypas. First, your website got me hooked on the Bridgertons, now it’s got me hooked on the Hathaways. Unfortunately, you can’t GET those two books at the library right now because everybody and their brother is reading them, and it’s driving me crazy.

I would love to try that.
And I would love to be able to say that the first book would be a romance, because there is a list of books that I need/want to read. But, unfortunately, the semester is starting up and I, for some reason, thought it would be a good idea to go back to school for a PhD that I don’t really need. So the first downloads would likely be textbooks.

Ooh, definitely a romance, but maybe one of those anthologies of paranormal romance novellas, like Strange Brew or Burning Up, rather than a novel - that sounds like a nice “taster” way to try out a new e-reader!

1. Flowers from the Storm by Laura Kinsale

5. The Shadow and the Star by Laura Kinsale

A powder blue e-reader would make me feel super cutting edge, which I’m really not, so I’d go with the historical romances I’m most looking forward to this fall: Jeannie Lin’s Butterfly Swords and Zoe Archer’s Scoundrel. An e-reader would be great for reading about China or Greece, but more importantly, it would be convenient if I ever went to China or Greece. Very much in keeping with the spirit of Eat, Pray, Love!

First would be A Tale of Two Demon Slayers by Angie Fox, because the waitlist for it on PaperBackSwap is very long, and I could totally see me impulse buying eBooks the way I impulse buy music on iTunes, lol.
Mikou said on 08.17.10 at 03:35 PM • [comment link]
If I won the Sony Reader, I’d probably 1st get Ethan Day’s At Piper’s Point (m/m romance).

Hmmm… I would start getting my keeper stash digital. Probably the JD Robb in death series.

First book would be Victoria Dahl’s A Little Bit Wild. And can I just say that cover is almost an exact match to the case I bought for my camera! Imagine if my two digital devices matched!

I’d download Kresley Cole’s Demon from the Dark, because those books are my paranormal crack. :)

Suzanne Brockman’s “Get Lucky.” I have all the others in the series, but that is one of the one’s that’s out of print, and therefore exorbitantly expensive. Assuming one can use Kindle files on the Sony, you can get it for $3.24. Hells yes.

Boy would I love to win one of these for my husband and I, as we are both having eye-sight issues. My first download would be a romance and it would be Crusie’s Maybe This Time or Ava Gray’s Skin Heat, as I adore that series.
kathybaug said on 08.17.10 at 03:39 PM • [comment link]
I would first load on some books I already own. Then I would purchase the rest of the Hunger Game Trilogy.
And since I would be giving the Sony to my husband, if you wanted to trade covers, Sarah, you COULD have the pretty blue cover
JennyME said on 08.17.10 at 03:42 PM • [comment link]
My first addition would be Last Night’s Scandal, by Loretta Chase. I’m on a tight budget this month and haven’t picked it up yet, but a beautiful new reader would give me an excuse to splurge. :)
Sue said on 08.17.10 at 03:42 PM • [comment link]
I’d download “Patricia Brent, Spinster” by Herbert George Jenkins.
Next, I’d locate the websites of various romance publishers and download the free category novels. I’ve been looking for an excuse to explore which ones appeal to me.

I’d get the 3rd Termeraire book by Naomi Novik.

Either the next Crusie or the next Gail Carriger, or maybe That Packing for Mars book by Mary Roach, that looks funny.

That’s tough. I’d probably download “Little Women” - that’s one of my comfort food books. Next would be Jane Eyre and L.M. Montgomery’s entire bookshelf. Are you sensing a theme? After that, who knows. I’ve got a trip to Germany planned in October and an e-reader would come in really handy.
“Would29” - Would 29 books suffice? Knowing me, probably not!
Runere McLain said on 08.17.10 at 03:50 PM • [comment link]
This would be wonderful to win! With 13 grandchildren I tend to splurge on them, not myself. This would be guilt free! lol
First download? Absolutely a Sherrilyn Kenyon. ANYTHING Kenyon!

I’d download the In Death series by J. D. Robb if they’re available. Just like potato chips…can’t eat just one.

It’d probably be a canning book like The Joy of Pickling. Because I spend far, far too much time canning.
Captcha is didnt78 - Didn’t I spend hours putting up 78 jars of tomatoes?

The first book I’d download would be the digital ARC of Lois McMaster Bujold’s newest Vokosigan book: Cryoburn.
Did anyone else say that yet?
Lynn said on 08.17.10 at 03:54 PM • [comment link]
First would be all the Vorkosigan series by Lois Bujold since I want to do a re-read before the newest Miles book (Cryoburn) comes out in October. I would also download the Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner—I saw so many recommendations for this series that I finally borrowed it from the library to read, but I think I want my own copies for keeps so I can re-read again!
Of course, then I would go crazy and download tons of romances and f/sf!
Blue is my favorite color and that is one beautiful cover.
Lynn

“Lord of the Rings” would be the first book I would upload.
Probably only to find out that eReaders offer no satisfactory search function. *hah*
Don’t know how many years of my life I already wasted flipping through the pages of that book to correctly quote some of the parts I’m in love with.
AJ said on 08.17.10 at 03:56 PM • [comment link]
Evil, evil, evil to make me pick only one. It would have to be Pride and Prejudice. (But in case you are wondering, next would be a Jennifer Cruise, then a Loretta Chase.)
BethanyA said on 08.17.10 at 03:56 PM • [comment link]
This is definitely hypothetical, since I can’t even find the book in print, but I’d love to download The Windflower by Tom and Sharon Curtis.
In reality, it would probably be something by Penelope Williamson. Perhaps The Passions of Emma?
Thank you for the contest, Bitches!

I’d download “Smaragdgrün”, a wonderful YA romance (with TT). It’s the third part of a trilogy and I can’t wait to know the end.
Anna Piranha said on 08.17.10 at 03:57 PM • [comment link]
This may sound square, but the first thing I would download would be Persuasion by Jane Austen. It is the only Austen I have not read and I have been saving it, knowing it’s the last time I will read one of her books for the first time. Since I am going to be 39 in a little less than a month and I’m having a leeeetle midlife crisis (This is not my beautiful house! This is not my beautiful wife!) I need the comfort that only Miss Jane Austen can provide.
validation word: past74 “I get mocked by people who were born past ‘74.”

The 1st book would be Sherrilyn Kenyon’s No Mercy. Next I would probably want the entire series of the Black Dagger Brotherhood by JR Ward.

Wow, I usually never enter these because I never win, but since my Kindle was stolen I have missed having an electronic book reader and this one looks divine! My first book would be the latest in the Merry Gentry series by Laurrell K. Hamilton. I love that series and then I want to start on all the Anita Blakes. Thanks for doing this!

For my first book, I’d have to go with Shogun, because I’d want something long to read that I could pick up at any time to read…. or the Norton Critical edition of Jane Eyre.
If series were allowed, I would also go with the Anne of Green Gables series.
But for a current series, I’d go with Stephanie Laurens Brides series… not so patiently waiting for the last book to be released!!
(gives72?? what gives?)
Carin said on 08.17.10 at 04:06 PM • [comment link]
I think I’d have to go with No Mercy by Sherrilyn Kenyon. Though, if it’s not out, my celebration book would be Last Night’s Scandal by LC. And then there’s all the other good ideas I’ve read in the comments. Jennifer Crusie, Sarah Mayberry. How about Victoria Dahls’ backlist? All winners!
Nadia said on 08.17.10 at 04:07 PM • [comment link]

Definitely Kresley Cole’s latest, Demon from the Dark. Can’t wait to find out who is kidnapping from all of the lore factions. Plus, one of my reading resolutions for this year was to finally read an entire ebook.
Jenna said on 08.17.10 at 04:10 PM • [comment link]
Definitely… DEFINITELY.. the first book I’d place on my Sony Reader would be The Kite Runner! I know, I know, I’ve read it a thousand times. I just can’t escape the enormity of it, the emotion of it, the truth behind it. Such a fabulous story!
Of course I’d have toa also tack on the True Blood Series, and this book I’ve been dying to read lately but just haven’t had the time to purchase: The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom.
So I guess that would be SEVERAL books rather than just one!
Justine Lark said on 08.17.10 at 04:11 PM • [comment link]
Free Sony Reader! how awesome!
First book I’d put on would be Pride & Prejudice so I’d always have my favorite book with me.
First books I’d pay to put on would be the Harry Potter series. Thousands of pages to re-read, I’d never be bored. But they are not available.
So the next first book would be Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder. Can never get tired of re-reading that one.
After that I might go for a new book like the new Loretta Chase I heard about here.

I’d get Blameless by Gail Carriger. The cliffhanger at the end of Changeless made me gnash my teeth.
I’d also get Bayou Moon, by Ilona Andrews.
Natasha A. said on 08.17.10 at 04:19 PM • [comment link]

I would definitely download Fever Dream by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, their newest novel in the series featuring Aloysius Pendergast, who reminds me of Sherlock Holmes. He also shares a character trait with my favorite romance hero, Wulfric Bedwyn—that iron self-control which is such a fun challenge to pierce. If Mary Balogh ever writes a sequel to Slightly Dangerous, that would definitely be downloaded :D (my exclamation point key isn’t working). But that’s just a pipe dream and I may have to be satisfied with downloading Slightly Dangerous before my paper copy is in tatters.

I’ve been thinking about getting an ereader for awhile now, but I’m not sure which book I would download first. Maybe Persuasion (but I bet I could find a free copy of that) so the first thing I would buy would be the nest Lois McMaster Bujold book about Miles!
Kilian Metcalf said on 08.17.10 at 04:30 PM • [comment link]
After I downloaded the complete works of Anthony Trollope, I would wait for Hilary Mantel’s sequel to Wolf Hall for my next download. In the meantime I would read the 600+ books on my Kindle.
I’m not entering this contest, Sarah. I have the Kindle 2 and have preordered the Kindle 3, so I’m an Amazon captive. I’ve seen the Sony eReader, though, and it is lovely. Congrats to whoever wins. Enjoy. Once you’ve taken a trip with your entire library in your hand, you’ll never look at a dead-tree book the same way.
Speaking of Eat, Pray, Love, do not pass Go, do not collect $200, but immediately get your girlfriends together and go see this movie. I hated the book, forced myself to read it for my book group, but lurved the movie. Lurved it so much, I’m organizing a girl’s day out with coworkers to go see it again on Sunday with Italian food to follow. Don’t read the sour reviews. This movie is a perfect summer movie - frothy, funny, gorgeous costumes and location setting, gorgeous men, you laugh, you cry, you get hungry. It has it all, and I want that green sari she wears in India for my own personal wardrobe.
say93 - I could think of 93 ways to say this movie rocks

The first book I’d download is The Man Who Ate the World by Jay Raynor. I’ve been kind of obsessed with wanting that book since watching the last cycle of Top Chef Masters. But the first romance would have to be Jennifer Crusie’s Maybe This Time. I can’t wait - finally another stand alone all in her own voice!

The Bachelors of Bear Creek Bundle by Lori Wilde.
It’s four books, and they were originally published in the Harlequin Duets line years ago, which my mother had decided were the most risque romance novels I was allowed to read. They were, after all, light romcoms. Nothing tawdry….
But when Harlequin released this digitally, years later, this one was rebranded as Blaze.
Wonder why these stories stuck with my 13 year old brain for more than a decade…..

What a great give-away! I would love to download “Maybe This Time”, which is Jenny Crusie’s upcoming new release, but I’m guessing it won’t be available in e-format that soon. So probably Welcome to Temptation by Jenny Crusie. Or, if it’s available, Crouching Buzzard Leaping Loon by Donna Andrews.
Really, anything by Jenny Crusie, any of the Maggody series by Joan Hess, and any of the Meg Langslow series by Donna Andrews. Throw in Lawrence Block’s Keller books, David Eddings Belgariad, and few select early Stephen King books (Salem’s Lot, The Shining, The Dead Zone), and you’ve got comfort reading FOR DAYS.

OMG, Want, Want, WANT! :) One of the first books I would load is probably something childbirth-related, as I am studying to be a midwife. However, a close second would be the long list of books I am dying to read from the YA thread of a few weeks ago. Seriously, I don’t know WHERE I would get romance/other book rec’s without your wonderful site! Thanks for everything you do!!

It’d be Soulless by Gail Carriger. (2nd is Blameless when it comes out—can’t wait! =D) Soulless is such a fun read that I’ve already reread it at least 3 times, and I’m sure I’ll be rereading it again in the future..especially if I have it on ebook. :)
Joy Kennedy said on 08.17.10 at 04:42 PM • [comment link]
I don’t know that I could load just one. Among the first half dozen would be Lord of Scoundrels or another Loretta Chase, one of Georgette Heyer’s possibly A Quiet Gentleman, a PG Wodehouse all of which are funny, Gaudy Night—one of my all time favorite romantic mysteries by Dorothy Sayers, one of Nora Roberts’ JD Robb mysteries as a prelude of buying them ALL. Then I’d start on the Miles Vorkosigan series by Bujold for my SF start, add some Heinlein as annoying as he can be. Mysteries, mysteries—well, I’ve already run out of money so….wait til next month.

The new Larissa Ione and Kresley Cole books due out next week. I love me some paranormal romance (well, GOOD paranormal romance), but I hate hate hate the covers of the books. They’re embarrassingly dorky. Yes, I am going home alone to crochet and my two cats, but the entire DC-metro area doesn’t need to know that! I’m dying for an e-reader!
hagedorn said on 08.17.10 at 04:48 PM • [comment link]
I would start at the beginning…
I would download Persuasion by Jane Austen. Every time I read it, I get something different out of it…whether at the time I need a story of romance and true soulmates or I need social commentary on the early 1800’s or just a strong heroine to look up too.
So definitely Austen.

Just one book?????
Impossible, impossible, impossible!
Here’s a list of must haves:
Outlander—- must have Jamie at my fingertips.
Anything and everything by Jennifer Crusie—must have laughs by the boatload.
Nobody’s Baby But Mine ..... Heaven, Texas ..... Susan Elizabeth Phillips—must have heros who are to die for (but still sometimes need a smack upside the head).
Lord of Scoundrels - must have a book that’s the epitome of romance!
In Death Series—must have Roarke, Roarke, and more Roarke!
Good Lord - there are so many “must haves” out there that I’ll be broke in no time!!! It would be so worth it!

If I was lucky enough to win this ereader (please, oh please) , the first book I would put on there besides Ms. Gilbert’s books would be The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. The Art of Racing in the Rain is one of the most amazing books I have ever read. It has a kick ass title and a truly unique story. And, like almost all my favorite books, there is a love story involved.
Kismet said on 08.17.10 at 04:55 PM • [comment link]
Well, the first download would be a tough one. I have a huge To be Bought list. I want the whole Austen collection, to start with. Then there’s Anna Campbell’s new book, and Claudia Dain’s new book, and Sabrina Jeffries is coming out shortly, and I still have to try Loretta Chase (gasp, horrors, I know… I’m a Chase virgin). AND I still have to try Heyer (crying, wailing, gnashing of teeth, Yes, I’m also a Heyer virgin)...
See my “I need to buy” list is way too long for my budget :(

Then I would have a wonderful christmas of new e-books ;)

I would buy Gail Carringer’s Changeless; have been wanting to read that for ages. I got my friend hooked on the first book, Souless, and she is bugging me to get the second book so she can borrow that, too.

Since I broke a personal code and saw the movie first (which was excellent), I realized that the book must be even better. So I’d read first, “Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,” and probably download the rest of the books in the sequence as well.

I would download the Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner. I find myself wanting to read these over and over and over again, and they get better each time I do. Must have my Eugenides fix!

I agree that Jennifer Crusie would need an immediate space on my e-reader. I can’t wait for Maybe This Time.
I also can’t wait for Mockingjay so Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games would be my second download.

First book would be either Johannes Cabal the Detective by Jonathan Howard or some steamy romance that I don’t necessarily want my husband to know I’m reading…. LOL

Hmm, the first book I’d put on my new Sony Reader would Echo in the Bone, by Diana Gabaldon. I’ve loved her books forever, but I haven’t found time to read this one, since it weighs like 20 lbs. With a sleek reader, I’d be able to haul that (and all Gabaldon’s books, which are about equal to my own body weight) with me wherever I go!

Though I love having romances on my iphone’s kindle, I’d first download David Mitchell’s “Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet” (itself, quite romantic), because I’m trying to get through it now, but it’s so freaking huge, I can’t carry it with me to read at lunch and on the L platform, and it’s too much for the iphone’s tiny screen. Sony reader, save me.

Demon from the Dark by Kresley Cole, because the library has yet to verify it has ordered the next Immortals After Dark book. If I was feeling responsible, I’d download a textbook, ‘cause I just started grad school.

I’d download my favorite book, A Prayer for Owen Meany.

The first book I would download would be No Mercy by Sherrilyn Kenyon.

The next book in Kresley Cole’s Immortals after Dark series comes out on the 24th, so it would have to be that! And then I’d go and buy the hardcopy, because that’s how I roll.

Flowers from the storm. Absolutely. That’s my fave romace. After that… the newest from Kenyon, Feehan, and Ward.

I can only pick one, huh? Probably Victoria Dahl’s “Crazy for You.” I’ve been dying to read it, but I can’t find it in bookstores. Only online these days. Love her! :)

I have a Kindle that I just love, love, LOVE! But unfortunately, I can’t access my library’s ebooks with it. :( However, the Sony Reader can! So yeah, I’d be getting library books with it :D

Definitely something trashy. I love the ability to be surreptitious!

It is hard to pick just one… but I’m really looking forward to Demon from the Dark by Kresley Cole (only one more week!) so that would probably be first!
