So, What Are You Reading This Weekend (With Some Sale Links)?

by SB Sarah | by SB Sarah | March 02, 2012 | Friday at 11:55 am | 70 Comments

A book open on a table with a road, grass and a tree growing out of it. The book is a journey, in other words. So, what are you reading this weekend? What books are you totally enjoying? Share share!

This weekend I'm in the car with the family heading out for vacation, and I plan to read as much as I can in the car. While the kids are awake, I read magazines, because it's easier for me to stop reading an article than it is a book. When I read a book, I tend to be completely unaware of everything but the book, and that can be troublesome for everyone else in the car on long road trips (much as I personally enjoy it). So while the kids are awake, magazines, and stretching and working out those left and right oblique muscles as I go-go-Gadget-arm to reach things that have fallen on the floor. But once they sleep, I have about 10 books saved up to read in the car, and for the rest of the week. Vacation reading is somehow extra special.

In case you're not sure what to read this week, I have some sales to give you some options, including some discounted Rachel Gibson titles for a future weekend. Hope your weekend reading is kickass!

“The Madness of Angels”, get it!  All three in that series are really good.  Happy weekend all.

I managed to find 3 of the 4 Essex sisters series by Eloisa James (Much Ado About You, etc) at a friends of the library sale for cheeps, so I’ve been reading them (completely out of order). They are delightful! Now I must go pay full price for Kiss Me, Annabel, which I have been leery about because of its stupid name. But the series is so very cute!

  3. Brooklyn Ann said on 03.02.12 at 12:56 PM[link]

Ooh, the Essex Sisters is my favorite Eloisa James series! Kiss Me, Annabelle was actually pretty good. I was surprised at the depth Annabelle showed compared to how she seemed in the first book.

I just finished THE ART OF THE KAMA SUTRA (and reviewed it on http://thearmchaircritic.blogs… ), which was pretty good.  More than just a collection of sexual positions, this has a lot on relationships and how interactions between men and woman are often the same today as in ancient times.

I am not sure.  Probably an Amazon freebie :D.  If you like crime novels,  Killer Instinct by Zoe Sharp is free on Amazon until Sunday.  For people outside the US (with an Amazon store)  Book of Shadows by Alexandra Sokoloff is also free.
*ponders* Maybe I should do a Murderati themed read…..

I started “Untamed” by Elizabeth Lowell the other day. I bought it a few weeks ago when it was on sale (along with about five or six of her other books). So far it’s interesting although the hero is a bit to alpha for my tastes. But if the book goes where I think it’s going, he’ll be softening up at some point.

I hope you have a great vacation, Sarah and family!

I just reread Bet Me last weekend. Jennifer Crusie is the Goddess of Romantic Comedy. This weekend, I’m reading Jill Shalvis’ Lucky Harbor series.

There’s nothing quite like cramming ninety books in my purse (via the Kindle,) when setting out for new adventures!

I’m slogging through an old Marsha Canham historical, Swept Away, and I’m feeling much older than when I started. Next up needs to be something shorter and not set in the Regency. Maybe Angelfall.

I’m so jealous that you can read in the car, SBSarah. I get stupidly carsick if I try. Last weekend, I was trying to take a price tag off a pair of shoes I had just purchased, and within seconds, I felt vomititious. I was sick all afternoon.

As for what I’ll be reading this weekend, I’ve got a week and a half to turn in three major research projects, so I’ll be reading literary journals and writing like a madwoman, alas. But after I’ve finished, I’ll be free! Free, for two whole weeks. I’m thinking I should probably take a trip this spring break, since it’s my last one ever.

  10. Donna said on 03.02.12 at 02:37 PM[link]

I’ll be finishing up Sabrina Jeffries “To Wed a Wild Lord” #4 in the Hellions of Halstead Hall series. I’m liking Gabriel a lot so far. After that it’ll be Nevada Barr’s latest - which had better be an improvement over the last one. I’m shocked how many more go to’s I’ve been stricking off the list rather than adding.

    Enjoy the trip!

For physical books, I’m reading Robin Hobb’s Farseer trilogy and in the middle of the last book. Not much on the romance front, but still, a good read. On my ColorNook, I have “A Weekend with Mr. Darcy” and liking that too. I see a couple listed above in the sales I must go look at tho. :o)

Zoe Sharps books are amazing. Charlie Fox is one of the best female protagonist I’ve come across in years. The first one was out of print when I started on the series, so I’ve not read it yet, but I can and do highly recommend the rest of them. I check out her website regularly hoping for a release date for next.  Be warned though she’s a bit of a divil for cliffhangers.

Last week I finished Bill Bryson’s A walk in the woods and A discovery of witches by Deborah Harkness (talk about degree of difficulty!  Witches and vampires and mitochondrial DNA, oh my!)  Then I somehow wandered into all these books that feature Death as a character: Darynda Jones’ First grave on the right and Second grave on left (I have to go get Third grave…whatever—heroine as Grim Reaper), Kalayne Price’s Grave witch series (Death as would-be boyfriend), Amber Benson’s Calliope Reaper Jones series (Death as a family-owned, multinational corporation), and Keturah and Lord Death, a YA fairy tale.  And when I want to ride the merry-go-round instead of a roller coaster, Dry storeroom no.1, a history of the British Museum (Natural History).  Next weekend, who knows?

  14. Carolanne said on 03.02.12 at 03:45 PM[link]

Spellbound Falls by Janet Chapman. Okay, the series has gotten silly (Atlantis?!) but I do like it.

  15. Tamara Hogan said on 03.02.12 at 04:08 PM[link]

I’m reading “Labyrinth” by Lois McMaster Bujold. Felt like getting my Miles on. ;-)

I’m re-reading Carolina Moon by Nora Roberts.  i love this book and I finally found my copy again.

I’m reading “The Dead-Tossed Waves” by Carrie Ryan, the sequel to the YA post-zombie-apocalypse novel “The Forest of Hands and Teeth.”  I’m still not sure if I like it, or at least the main character, but I’m intrigued enough with the story and the world she’s built to keep reading.

  18. GHN said on 03.02.12 at 05:09 PM[link]

Timeless by Gail Carriger! I saw this book in a store yesterday, and immediately snatched one up - the Parasol Protectorate books are made of win!!  :-D

  19. Charlotte St. Claire said on 03.02.12 at 05:41 PM[link]

Re-reading “An Unexpected Gentleman” by Alissa Johnson.  I hadn’t read the previous book in the series the first time I read it, so now the backstory with Colin being in prison makes a lot more sense.  Her heroes are always sparklingly charming.  I would totally agree to marry a man who suggested I should marry him out of hate to squander his fortune and burn down his houses.

  20. Faye said on 03.02.12 at 05:49 PM[link]

I’ll be reading Emilie by Cherie Claire, which is an Acadian romance. This month my romance bookclub is trying to each read a book that could have been about our ancestors. I couldn’t find any that actually took place in French Canada, but this at least starts out there. I’m expecting WTFery galore.

If you love tortured heroes, than definitely check out ‘A Rogue By Any Other Name’!

Just finished Thread of Death and now reading By a Thread by Jennifer Estep. I’ve enjoyed this series a lot. I am really cheering for Owen and feeling sort of swoony about how he’s supporting Gin. I may go back and grab an early In Death next, as I am slowly reading that series or I may jump into Raven Cursed by Faith Hunter. One of the comments reminded me of Grave Witch by Kalayna Price so I need to go see what new books have come out in her series! Lot’s of good suggestions here. Happy Weekend and lots of reading fun to all! :)

Thank you Julie! We’re headed north, to what I am told is “snow.” Lots and lots of “snow.” I haven’t seen any this winter so it’ll be fabulous.

Oh, that just stinks. Hubby is the same way- if he looks at his phone he starts to get ill. I’m sorry.

I think we should plan your spring break. Where do you want to go? Heh heh heh.

I started the Cal Leandros series by Rob Thurman this week in anticipation of the upcoming release of Doubletake.  I’m reading Roadkill now and just have Blackout to go.  Really enjoying the series.

When I’m done w/ Cal & Co., I have a raftload of new releases in the queue—Lauren Willing, Gail Carriger, C.E. Murphy, Kim Harrison, Connie Suttle. . . .  Never enough time!

I already had The Madness of Angels on my Kindle, but was putting off starting the series because I thought there was a book before that one that is only available in HB—but maybe I was mistaken.

Have a safe (and enjoyable) trip, Sarah.

Somewhere warm. I normally tolerate the PNW winters pretty well, but lately I’ve been fantasizing about tropical and/or desert islands (never a good sign when you’re stuck in the middle of an Oregon rainstorm). My Pinterest is flooded with pictures of Hawaii and Santorini.

I just finished the 3rd book in Lorelei James’ Rough Riders series, Cowgirl Up and Ride (I think that was the title.)  It was really good and amazingly better than the first two in the series, so I’m beginning to see what my friends’ fuss is about.

Next up for me is The Hunger Games.  I’m finally going to read it.

I’m close to finished with Into the Storm (one of Suzanne Brockmann’s Troubleshooters series) on audio and I’m really enjoying it.  Next up on audio will be a Fountain Filled with Blood or Celebrity In Death, whichever I get first.

@SBSarah - I am the same with with not being able to read in the car.  Not due to carsickness, but due to the book crankiness I get when my go-go-gadget hands are required to pass back treats and entertainment to the youngsters.

Re-reading Ravished by Amanda Quick.  Think a thread here reminded me of - enjoying it - really needing a comfort read this weekend.  I read something by Karina Bliss yesterday (Here Comes the Groom, I think) - liked it but didn’t love it.  This is the second well reviewed / highly recommended KB that I liked ok but didn’t love, so I’m thinking she’s not really for me.

Re-read Dragon Flight by Anne McCaffrey recently.  I read it so long ago that I thought I didn’t remember much about it, but as I read it I kept knowing what was going to happen next.  Really struck by how influential this book was - kept reminding me of Sharon Shinn’s Archangel and other (later) books.

Ragnar and Juliet was a DNF for me. BUT the trailer (with Barbies and Spacepunk!) is a scream.  I was just sorry the book wasn’t as good as the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…
Last weekend I read EVERYTHING by Kelly Hunter.  I was feeling sorry for myself that there was nothing left to read, but then Caroline Linden’s Blame it on Bath downloaded itself to my Kindle, so I’ll be reading that. I love pre-ordered books!

Last week I mentioned that I was about to read Courtney Milan’s Unclaimed.  I also mentioned that I was a little nervous about it because I don’t like stories with prostitutes as the hero/heroine (because of the angst).  Well, I finished it and I really liked it.  It wasn’t hopelessly, sillily (possibly not a real word) angsty.  The dialogue was smart and witty.  The hero and heroine were mostly sensible and ultimately likeable people.  I especially liked the fact that she reclaimed her sexuality after having divorced herself from it for so long.

i was so impressed with my incredible bravery in reading this book that I’ve bought the new Joanne Bourne book.  I know its going to be really angsty.  I’m prepared to be traumatized.  I usually am when reading Joanne Bourne.  Am I the only one who thinks her characters are too wonderful?  They are, but she’s a good writer so I’m going to do it.  Wish me luck!

  43. Tara said on 03.02.12 at 11:44 PM[link]

I’m going to read the new Sarah Mayberry and Lynn Ray Harris books. Somehow I didn’t know that two of my favourite authors were releasing books this week and managed to stumble on both of them.

  44. Copa said on 03.03.12 at 04:34 AM[link]

Seriously, audiobooks! I do a 30 hour drive in two days a few times a year to see my family, and audiobooks are the way to go, if you don’t have library2go and an ipod, the library has a semi-large collection on cd.

  45. velocireader said on 03.03.12 at 08:32 AM[link]

I read Prey by Linda Howard and I will never get that time back. It was awful. I wanted the bear to just eat everyone and be done with it. I also read Death Comes to Pemberley by PD James, and it was disappointing.

  46. Orange_1949 said on 03.03.12 at 10:30 AM[link]

I discovered bujold last summer and went crazy - listened to all of them on audiobooks that I was able to download from the library. They were amazing! I’m hoping for more, but they’re eminently re-readable.

I’m re-reading Linda Winfree’s Hearts of the South series. They’re terrific, but I’m sad that she appears to have stopped publishing. I’m going south next week and these comments are helpful as I think about what new stuff I’m going to load onto my Sony.

  51. Scrin said on 03.03.12 at 01:20 PM[link]

Ah, darnit. Missed my click and posted early. I’m re-reading Lamb in that hardback leather-ette bound edition. Ah, Christopher Moore…I also got and read Timeless, by Gail Carriger. Feelings ambivalent—normally she wraps every loose end up and ties them all into a big pretty bow. This felt a little rougher. Other than that, I’m killing time until Mass Effect 3 comes out Tuesday.

  52. Karin said on 03.03.12 at 01:32 PM[link]

Agree about Joanna Bourne’s characters, especially the women, but I’m totally in love with her last hero, Guilliame LeBreton(sigh, pitter-pat) from The Forbidden Rose. I’ve got the new Bourne book, as well as Unclaimed, but I don’t think I can take that much back-to-back angst. So right now I’m enjoying The Capture of the Earl of Glencrae, with is pure fluff and as nonsensical as can be.

  56. PamG said on 03.03.12 at 08:22 PM[link]

I forced myself to finish The Night Circus, and then made the experience worse by reading Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand which I loved.  I immediately wanted to write a comparative essay discussing why one book worked for me and the other was a mega-fail.  Both meet the definition of romance, albeit of the fairly chaste persuasion, yet they are worlds apart in readability.  Had to read Sweet Enemy, When Beauty Tamed the Beast, and The Duke Is Mine as a chaser.

I am currently reading through Donna Killian’s Poetic Death mysteries.  Although Killian sometimes falls into the cozy trap of having the (usually) heroine reiterate all possible solutions for several boring pages of internal monologue instead of—you know—plot, I’m finding the series pleasant and…cozy.  I like the literary references, the evocative descriptions of England’s Lake District, and the relationship between hero and heroine very much.

  58. Nabpaw said on 03.03.12 at 10:23 PM[link]

Is that Laurens?  I stopped reading her awhile ago.  I decided that before I pick up the Bourne, I would reread some Joan Wolf.  Her characters are also too good to be true, but the stories aren’t terribly angsty.  I just finished The Arrangement which I thoroughly enjoyed and will now start the Bourne.  or maybe I’ll read the new Carolyn Jewel….

Let’s see… today I’ve: finished Decadent by Shayla Black, which I started because I had to read the immortal phrase (I wanted to smack both the h/h multiple times as well as the author); started and finished By a Thread by Jennifer Estep and Changing the Game by Jaci Burton. I can do that because I skim the sex scenes and I have no DH or plot moppets to look after. Saturday is my wallow day. No idea what is next, but I do have EIKAL on the nook. Way too many books to choose from!

OH, and DPR: I’d be happy to share my favorite places in Hawaii with you (most of them are in and around Kona), especially if you need a tour guide. :) I’m always up for a Hawaii trip!

Totally not a romance, but I just started Massie’s Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman, and I’m loving it.  It’s a brick, so I suspect I’ll be reading it for at least a week.  Which might justify the almost $25 price tag on the Kindle edition.

  62. Taylor Reynolds said on 03.04.12 at 09:44 AM[link]

I just finished Chase’s “The Last Hellion” last night and adored it. I finished Julie Ann Long’s “How the Marquess was Won” on Friday night then really had to compare the instant gratification cost of $6.99 for the ebook versus the penny-pincher $4.06 hardcopy. Instant grat won, so I can start at the beginning of the Pennyroyal Green series.

Big thanks to Sarah for pointing out that she liked Long!

I’ve been on a BUY NOW clicking spree this morning to check out this Barrons dude in the Fever series, 50 Shades of Grey (I couldn’t get into the Brotherhood boys and I haven’t read Twilight, so we’ll see how this crack works for me) and a couple other books that were patiently waiting in my cart.

I just finished Josh Bazell’s Wild Thing, which I loved except for his insertion of a real-life political figure into the story.

Now I’m reading Jo Beverley’s A Scandalous Countess.

  64. Robin Mayerhoefer said on 03.04.12 at 12:14 PM[link]

I’m reading Incubus Dreams by Laurell K. Hamilton, but since starting it I’ve put it down twice to read something else, and then come back to it. I really enjoyed the earlier Anita Blake books, but they are increasingly more focused on sex. Not that I mind sex in a book, but I miss the story and the character building. I’m on page 154, and it seems like the entire 154 pages have been one long sex scene.

Like DPR I cannot read in the car without getting violently ill. I can, however, stitch or crochet in the car without ill effect; go figure.

I’m stuck in Medieval times for the moment; just finished an ancient Phillippa Carr/Victoria Holt, “Miracle At St. Bruno’s” just because somebody gave it to me and I’ve never read any of her stuff; it was entertainingly angsty in a Norah Lofts/Anya Seton sort of way without being quite as soaked in irony as they can be. Currently reading “The Leper of St Giles” by Ellis Peters, who is one of my cracktastic authors; I love me some Cadfael. (Just noticed the plethora of saints here; must be because it’s Lent.)

If anyone is intrigued by old timey romance comics I just purchased “Young Romace: The Best of Simon and Kirby’s Romance Comics” and am incredibly loving it from the social view of seeing where all the great tropes started and especially what was salacious and social before the comics code came along and “cleaned up” romance comics. I love the old timey melodrama of it all.

I can not read in the car but my sister used to read to her children while on car trips.  Now in their late twenties they still remember very fondly listening to Bunnicula and similar books. She passed on her love of books during those trips, among other times.

Well I’m going to be reading Nalini Singh’s Angel’s Flight, despite the fact that I own all of the stories in it bar one, an absolute rip to re-publish all her novellas with only one new story, alas I wish to know the romance between Jessamay and Galen.

I’ve heard good reviews for wassit, The Madness of Angels so I may also check that out, I just wish there were more angel themed books without religious bull crap, the romance is optional! So if I find it is clogged with, God this and God that, I may possibly have to cry.

I just read A Discovery of Witches. I love it. It does end with a cliffhanger, but it has a love of history and science and wonder all at once.
