Secret Agent Woman
by Candy | October 07, 2005 | Friday at 7:13 pm | 9 CommentsYou should know the drill by now: Give us the title, author and heroine’s name (DON’T FORGET THAT LAST BIT OR YOU’LL CRY AND CRY BECAUSE NO HEROINE’S NAME = NO WIN) and you shall find yourselves the proud owners of a custom-made Smart Bitch title. Yay!
I will kick danger IN THE ASS

Well, hot goddamn donkeys—that took no time at all!
And thus is a new Smart Bitch title-holder born! Congratulations, Vicki. Coronation ceremony to come.

Vicki, I’m am so envious. I never know any of the books. :(
And even when it turns out I’ve read them, I don’t recoginze them. My brain just doesn’t work that way (can’t do cross-words either!).

Oh, Tonda, I have a terrible memory. The most recent examples: my dh and I both forgot our anniversary this year. It was August 21 and it finally occurred to me around September 30. Oops. Also, I tracked Connie Brockway down at the Reno airport to gush about her writing. I came THIS CLOSE to raving about a book that wasn’t hers. I would have made an impression anyway.
(Does anyone know who wrote an excellent book set in turn-of-the-century California about two con artists? These were two of the most memorable and unique h/h’s I’ve ever read. The man had a hilarious phobia of knives and he was hiding that he was Jewish. Anyone?)
So something about this SWF triggered a memory, and Google is my friend. I just googled the one main point of the story that I remembered and voila! History in the making! Jesus, I hope that ain’t cheating.

Victoria, I think you’re looking for Patricia Gaffney’s Crooked Hearts. The PW review on Amazon mentions his fear of knives. Hope it’s what you’re looking for :)

That’s it! Thank you so much! I think I let someone borrow it and I’ve got to buy it again.

Good news: Crooked Hearts has five stars on Amazon. I really, truly love this book. Bad news: It’s out of print! :gulp:
If any of you can find it in your library, read it and enjoy.

I always enjoy seeing if I can guess the book. I never would have gotten this one.
