Very nice, Sarah. Little Freebird (we called both of ours “Bozo” before they popped out) will be fortunate to have a mommy who understands what’s really important in life.

The column didn’t make me cry, but I enjoyed reading it. Well done.

Nice job, Sarah. My baby was “Spud” (a good Irish name) in utero; I didn’t write her any letters, but we did have a nice long talk about bonding the night she was born.
Oh—take the book *and* the magazine. You never know what to expect :)

One of my kids was called “baby-bug” in utero (after the first ultrasound, where he looked distressingly like a slug/beetle hybrid) and the second was The Bump. As soon as we found out the gender, we started calling them by their names. I didn’t write any letters either, basically because I’m a lazy ass. In fact, the “first year scrapbook” my mom gave me was later sold on eBay, new and unused. Yeah, I said I was a lazy ass.

My cousin, the nurse, is fond of calling in utero children “the parasite.” The name tends not to go over well with the mothers-to-be.
