RNA Prizes Announced
by SB Sarah | February 04, 2008 | Monday at 11:16 pm | 11 CommentsThanks to Michelle Styles, my UK source for all really interesting news across the pond, I have word that the RNA has announced the winners of their annual prizes:
Freya North has won 2008 Romantic Novel of the Year for Pillow Talk.
And Kate Hardy has won the 2008 RNA Romance Prize for Breakfast at Giovanni’s, which will be released in the US as In Bed With Her Italian Boss
I like the UK title better, but then, that’s probably not news.

I prefer the UK title too. The US title is just stupid. It doesn’t quite have the hook one needs to rope in a reader.

The US title is part of the trend of bad titling on US books of all genres. It’s of the “literally describe the contents of the book” subcategory.
Other bad varieties are “one word that tells you nothing” and “lines from songs.” The latter variety drive me up a wall, since my company is guaranteed to have at least one in every single pub month.

That title sounds like she woke up and had no idea how she ended up there. Isn’t that date rape?

Dammit, Harlequin, this is why you get looked down on. Breakfast at Giovanni’s sounds more exciting and seductive than In Bed With Her Italian Boss, especially when you’ve already published In Bed With A Boss and In Bed With Her Boss. Do you ever really stop and think why people say “it’s all just the same story”?

I just can’t figure out why the Boss’s ethnic identity is relevant to why she’s in bed with him. Does it really matter so much? What if she’s In Bed With Her Serbo-Croatian Boss? In Bed With Her Welsh Boss? In Bed With Her Morroccan Boss? I would hope he’s Morroccan her world. Unless they’re trying to say something about the sexual prowess of non-Italians? Hmmmmm?

Poor Kate…awful, awful title change.
What’s with American publishers. I’m truely beginning to believe they want to end the entire romance book industry. Yesh, is there any other reason for the truely horrid covers and titles?
