Title: A Night to Surrender
Author: Tessa Dare
Publication Info: Avon 2011
Spindle Cove is the destination of choice for certain types of well-bred young ladies: the painfully shy, young wives disenchanted with matrimony, and young girls too enchanted with the wrong men. It is a haven for those who live there.
Victor Bramwell, the new Earl of Rycliff, knows he doesn't belong here. So far as he can tell, there's nothing in this place but spinsters...and sheep. But he has no choice, he has orders to gather a militia. It's a simple mission, made complicated by the spirited, exquisite Susanna Finch--a woman who is determined to save her personal utopia from the invasion of Bram's makeshift army.
Susanna has no use for aggravating men; Bram has sworn off interfering women. The scene is set for an epic battle...but who can be named the winner when both have so much to lose?
And here is Kelly's review:
I really enjoyed this book! I laughed out loud many times at some of the tiniest details, such as a lamb named Dinner that was still living at the end of the story. I loved the running joke on “Mrs. Worthington’s Wisdom” – a book that was filled with anything but wisdom on what is proper for a lady to do or say or not do or say. Our heroine, Susanna collects the books so that they are very hard to find in the rest of the world.
Susanna is a strong woman who has made the most of her situation. She has built a world for women to flourish and safe. Her self-absorbed father, who I came to dislike greatly, pays her little attention spending all his time on his inventions. It is he that the hero, Bram, has come to persuade in order to get back to fighting in the war. Bram is stubborn but not stupid. Susanna has learned much in the way of medicine, sadly through her own hardships, and uses that knowledge to help others.
I liked that there was multiple storylines going on and all seemed feasible. I liked the cast of characters that make up the town. Bram’s cousin Collin is a spoiled rake who got dragged along but gives a fabulous speech that had me looking for someone to share it with.
There was only one thing that didn’t work for me but didn’t bother others. Of course, they don’t want her to get pregnant, so he pulls out and where he releases I found to be messy and inconsiderate.
Regardless, I highly recommend it!
