My One And Only: A Giveaway and a Bag Worth Coveting

Book Cover Kristan Higgins’ My One and Only is happily ensconced on the NYT and USA Today bestseller lists, and I have been offered a fun little collection to celebrate.

Gift setIf you leave a comment and tell me the most essential item in your car’s glove compartment, you’re entered to win. Easy! And what could you win? A prize pack that includes a really cute travel bag, some travel essentials like lip gloss, mascara, and bronzer, and a copy of the book.

My glove compartment essentials are kinda boring: a mylar reflective heat blanket, bottles of water, hand wipes, about 14,000 pens that don’t work, and a really bad GPS. If you know which one is my car and want to steal it, go for it – it gives really crap directions, like getting off the highway and getting on one of those roads with stoplights and big box stores every 200 ft. I think it would take me to Manhattan by way of Texas if I allowed it. I do have a candy stash, though. No touching!

Standard disclaimers apply: I am not being compensated for this giveaway. Void where prohibited. Hang up and drive. Texting while operating a moving vehicle is punishable by a lot of hateration and some glaring, and possibly a heaping ticket if the cops spot you. No hateration in this dancery. You’ve got 24 hours. This contest is open to residents of the US and Canada.

So, what’s in your

wallet

glove compartment that absolutely must stay there? Got a dashboard mascot that is required in your car? Anyone have a mini-library in their car, too, or are you one of those people who can’t read in a moving vehicle?

  1. StephanieQ says:

I don’t even have my insurance cards in the glove compartment like I’m ‘sposed to, but I do have Elton John’s Greatest Hits and the best of Queen.  What could be more must-have than these?

  2. Scrin says:

    Honestly?

It’s the napkins. I’m clumsy and spill stuff all the time. So I keep some napkins (usually those leftover from buying fast food) in the glove compartment

  3. Danielle says:

The most essential thing in my glove compartment is my fuzz buster!  It can help me avoid both the speeding and the texting ticket!

  4. Jenny C. says:

I keep my devotional in there so I can read it while waiting to pick up my kid from school.

  5. I have a collection of music including the greatest hits of Heart and Queen, basically anything I can sing along to.  (The water I keep in large quantities in my trunk because hey, it’s the desert and one bottle won’t be enough if I’m stranded.)

  6. Maya S. says:

I keep a copy of “Rebecaa” in there so I always have a book to read if I need it.  I have no idea why I chose that of all books, but it’s there!

  7. Kelly S says:

I’m going to second napkins as the most useful thing in my glovebox.  Also in there are 20 or so writing utensils, paper, the owner’s manual for the car, the maintenance book for the car which the hubby keeps updated, a first aid kit, a tire pressure gauge, a spare pair of glasses from the 80’s, a candle and matches in case I’m stuck in my car in a snow storm (apparently 1 candle will keep the car warm enough while it is burning so the car doesn’t have to run) and other stuff I am always surprised to see when I go digging in there for something that slid way to the back.

Now, I must ask, why is there a pet collar in the prize pack picture?

comes34 – hmm, that would make an excellent night/weekend/month…

  8. Jan O'Hara says:

I’m very boring: napkins. My other family members are addicted to super big gulps yet can’t seem to hold onto them. I just go for the coffee.

  9. closetcrafter says:

Extra pair of undies in case of a laughing or lady emergency

  10. Suzy K says:

The most essential thing in my glovebox?

    tire pressure gauge!

    also:
    napkins
    insurance card
    car registration
    floss sticks in bag
    small hair brush in bag
directions on where to place jumper cables
    15 year old maps
    small notebook

  11. Katharine says:

The most essential thing in my glove compartment is a spare pair of glasses. For all of those times when I forget I’m extremely nearsighted and set out under the illusion that I can read a sign more than five feet from my face.

  12. Amy K says:

    My GPS!

  13. Laura (in PA) says:

I too, collect extra napkins for my glovebox. Now I also have a travel size packet of Clorox wipes, for when I’m really a slob, or someone sneezes all over the inside of my car. I have to admit I’ve never thought to include emergency undies.

Other essentials: a small hairbrush for when I drive around with the sunroof open, a copy of an old Nora Roberts category in case I’m desperate for a read (even though I now have both my iPhone and my Kindle in my purse all the time), and a pad and pen for… I don’t know. Love notes on the fly?

This prize pack looks awesome. I even have little dogs for the dog collar.

  14. queenmama says:

Most useful thing in my glove compartment is the two extra pairs of sunglasses bc inevitably I will by in need with none to be found!  However, the close second is the window axe that was a stocking stuffer several years ago when my mother was going through a particularly paranoid phase!

  15. brit says:

I think my pocket knife, I constantly find myself in places where someone needs a knife and I head out to the cay to grab it. The second most useful is a flashlight. I moved out to the country and I need something to friggin’ see without streetlights. It is in second place now because I also have a flashlight in my purse, relegating the glove box light to emergency backup light.

  16. Sandra says:

My “always in my glovebox and remove if you want to die” list contains:

    Small tin of breath mints
    -Pen
    -Napkins
-One pair of those roll up, stick inside your glasses, sunglass thingies you get from your opthamologist after they dilate your eyes. (Always losing real sunglasses!)
    -Hair product
-Lip balm…lightly tinted so I’m ok if I also lose my lipgloss (see losing sunglasses above.  Really, I have a problem!)

  17. Becky Moore says:

A small bag with two pads, a tampon, chapstick and a ponytail holder, because you never know …

  18. Maria says:

I keep an iPod in my glove box because I can run it from my car stereo. The other must have essential is a leatherman tool. As for napkins, I keep a whole roll of papertowels in the back.

Captcha = reason45 I can think of 45 reasons to have a roll of papertowels. (but not all of them are logical)

  19. The manual for the clock on the dashboard.  Every six months I have to dig it out again.

  20. I also keep EJ, Queen, and Heart in the glove box.  But a towel in the trunk just in case I drive by a lovely beach.  Most Hawaiians carrry their boards in case the surf is up.

But no hula girl on the dashboard.

  21. Teri C says:

Gosh I am going for the Duct Tape. I have three kids and there is almost nothing it cannot fix: from broken shoes to holes in pants, to instant hem (yes!) to binder fixer, backpack strap repairer. With a little tissue it can be a band aid, a wart remover, a tire patch, a fender fixer and a dog hair remover.
Between the swiss army knife, hand sanitizer, baby wipes, sharpie, and rescue remedy my glove box is almost ready for the apocalypse.
After Kristan came to the book chat I just cannot get enough of her wild characters.

  22. Erin says:

Kleenex!  Just in case we pass some roadkill and I need to cry.

  23. Cassie says:

I don’t own a car, and thus don’t have a glove compartment (New Yorkers for the win!).

BUT, when I did have a car and therefore a glove compartment, the most important thing in it was my tire gauge. And a flashlight. And my insurance info. All the really boring, but necessary, stuff. All the interesting things were in my purse, haha.

  24. Kaya H says:

My fav item in the glove box is the sunscreen. Sure there are a lot of other essentials but I am white like a ghost and the hint of sun = 50 new freckles and I have rather enough so I slather on each exit of the car as the weather improves.
I just have to read past the chaptick, a book (because you need a spare in the car) and the mini first aid kit and I am set to go.

  25. becca says:

My glove box is so small all it can contain is the manual and the magic thinge to remove the locking caps on my tires. But I keep a stash of napkins on a small “utility” shelf, along with an extra pair of glasses and a flashlight.  I’ve used that flashlight an awful lot on long drips when we’re driving after dark and I still want to read.

My iPod stays with me, not left in the car – but I listen to audiobooks through my car stereo all the time. The GPS unit lives in a drawer in the house, when my son remembers to bring it in from his car.

under68: I have under 68 items in my glove box.

  26. P. Awful says:

A Tide pen and Wisp disposable toothbrushes!

  27. redgirl says:

A toothbrush. This can be used for teeth (obvs) and in an emergency, it will smooth the frizzys from the curly-haired such as I if no comb is available.

  28. PattiR says:

Tissues.  I cannot tell you how many times my son gets into the car and sneezes…and needs a tissue.  😐  He has allergies, but still…you would think he would carry them around with him?
Also, in there are Wet Wipes, sunglasses, some CD’s I don’t listen to any more, pony tail holders, pens that don’t work, and car manual.  Now that I sell it, I have AVON hand cream in there too.

  29. kate says:

Blow =-up beach ball….you never know when youre going to need to blow it up and throw it at a backseat drivers head!

  30. Karen says:

Okay, so I’m very boring…  my one thing I NEED in the glove box is my tire gauge.  Everything else is negotiable!

Now if you are asking about in the car in general, I go no where without my army surplus trench shovel.  You never know when you might need to dig out!

cold44 – If you have ever been stuck with a leaky tire AND snow up to the bumper when it is cold out, you know why it is my security blanket—more so than the army surplus blanket in the trunk!  (Army surplus is useful, what can I say?)

  31. Susan Laura says:

Snacks! They help me resist the fast food drive-thrus when hunger hits. And, even though my kids are now pre-teens and teens, nothing stops their whining faster than, “here, have some teddy grahams!”

  32. Susan Laura says:

Snacks! They help me resist the fast food drive-thrus when hunger hits. And, even though my kids are now pre-teens and teens, nothing stops their whining faster than, “here, have some teddy grahams!”

  33. Natalie Decker says:

Baby wipes and a pocket road atlas of all 50 states just in case I want to go somewhere quick!

  34. Lisa Hendrix says:

Combination pocket knife/corkscrew, for emergency picnics. Plus random condiment packets from fast food meals—which my kids refer to as emergency rations after hearing about that elderly woman a few years back who went off the road in her car and survived several days on her collection of ketchup and salsa.

  35. Sasha says:

    Napkins baby-‘cause I’m a klutz!

  36. rebyj says:

fast food coupons, napkins and straws
emergency dollar for airing up a tire
hand written directions to anywhere I’ve needed them for since i got the car. I can’t throw them away, i may need them again someday lol.

  37. Heather says:

My item is the boring napkins as well. They have come in handy so many times, it’s nice to have a stash.

  38. Meg P says:

Umbrella because I live in Oregon.

  39. Jenn3128 says:

I always have tampons and my tire gauge in my glove box.

  40. Lisa B says:

All kind of CD’s for when there is nothing good to listent o on the radio! A lint brush, where else would you keep it. Lip gloss for last minute touch ups and insurance card and registration of course.

    Lisa B
